Without a doubt, Archie Goodwin who is the sidekick of Rex Stout’s, Nero Wolfe. Although Goodwin, the wise cracking lady’s man gathers the evidence, it is Nero Wolfe who solves the case.
yessssssssssss – I always think of the cast when writing – watching Bones made me including a FBI-agent and the story wouldn’t make any sense if I did not think of the actor of Booth to play it ☺
Talking about sidekicks – the difference of a good TV Show and a very good Show is the number of interesting characters. Cop number 3 and 4 make the difference. At Castle it’s Ryan and Esposito. They kind of remind me of Stan and Olli ?
@Rae no, it’s just a commercial gag. Like the band of the guitarrist in LOST had a myspace page. So there are in fact ghostwriters who wrote these Castle Books
I always liked Siobhan Clark from the Rebus novels. One thing that infuriates me is a poorly written sidekick who needs everything explained to them by the MC. I can’t recall that being the case with the Rebus books.
Sorry, a vision of Blyth Duff in Talgarth just popped into my head; “BDSM? I’m sorry you’ve lost me!” “I’m sorry, you’ve lost me!” almost became a catchphrase, but the classic was when a doctor was showing her x-ray of a wounded colleague and was explaining, at great length, that there was a bullet lodged between two vertebrae and operating to remove it might kill him. Quick as a flash she replied “You mean he has a spinal injury?”
Colin Dexter created Morse. And Lewis. BBC then took Dexter’s characters and gave Lewis a new life and partner after Morse died. Same people apparently also made Endeavour, which is the younger version of Morse.
I absolutely love Roberta Steele in the DS Logan McRae series by Stuart MacBride. This is a great question, @Susan! And it also makes me want to ask…what do people think makes a great sidekick?
Owen! From @Malcolm series… just got to love him
He’s one of my favourites too.
Thank you. I think he’s a bit of a disaster, personally! 😉
Frank Phillips from the DCI Ryan series of books by LJ Ross
Great character.
Branson in the Dead series by Peter James
Well who is the Sidekick AT Castle? I think it’s Castle ? Otherwise I would nominate Kate Beckett. And Troy. And Mister Stringer
Excellent choices. What about Inspector Parker and Archie Goodwin/Nero Wolfe?
Would have to check this out …
Oh Archie was a good sidekick, especially in the tv series played by Timothy Hutton.
@Steven‘s Damen Brook’s sidekick John Noble is a great character too.
Tinker and Pedro the Wonder Dog from Sexton Blake. Templeton Black from Newbury and Hobbes
Not really a sidekick since she’s his boss – Roberta Steel from Stuart Macbride’s Logan MacRae series.
She’s mine too

DS Bryant Kim Stone’s right hand man, confidant and moral guide, from Angela Marsons amazing books!
Yes!
Thank you ?
I love Bryant ‘…a slice of tolerance, with an extra helping of patience’ the perfect description.
@Michelle I love him too ?
Siobhan obvs- the old pisshead would get nothing done without her.
Without a doubt, Archie Goodwin who is the sidekick of Rex Stout’s, Nero Wolfe. Although Goodwin, the wise cracking lady’s man gathers the evidence, it is Nero Wolfe who solves the case.
yes, he would have to be one of my favourites
Glen Branson from Roy Grace series
Booth and Brennan – Bones
yessssssssssss – I always think of the cast when writing – watching Bones made me including a FBI-agent and the story wouldn’t make any sense if I did not think of the actor of Booth to play it ☺
Have you read the book series Kathy Reichs writes?
@Joy We had one as audio. Whatever comes first – I had a problem with the book as Bones has a different character in the book than in the T-Show
Would have been the other way round in case I read the book first …
Have the books cant get into them as tv show is still fresh in my mind
@Rae exactly. Has anone READ Castle? Actually I did – was ok but in what universe you afford a loft in Manhattan with publishing that ….?
@Neal yes the show character is very different to the book. But for me the book character is someone you can relate to more.
I’ve not read castle but making my way through the tv show
That’s true – Bonus is funny in the beginning but the farer the story goes she’s getting a bit annoying
Talking about sidekicks – the difference of a good TV Show and a very good Show is the number of interesting characters. Cop number 3 and 4 make the difference. At Castle it’s Ryan and Esposito. They kind of remind me of Stan and Olli ?
Didnt even know castle were books whos the author @@Neal

Omg just thought it was total fiction….feel such a dunce lol
@Rae no, it’s just a commercial gag. Like the band of the guitarrist in LOST had a myspace page. So there are in fact ghostwriters who wrote these Castle Books
it’s even translated into German so I could read it ☺
Be looking on world of books when I get home monday
Magersfontein Lugg, if only for proving that saying about no man being a hero to his valet.
and just for that wonderful name!
Tonto
As in “The Lone Ranger”?
Hastings!
“I say, Poirot.”
Precisely. That “I say” is a good 50% of what I love about Poirot, and Hugh Fraser does it to perfection.
@Mel Pete aka chunky just loved him
Aww… thanks, Sarah. ??
Another favourite Rizzoli and Isles based on Tess Gerristen Rizzoli and Isles series
Harriet Vane/Bunter
Glenn Branson (Roy Grace’s sidekick)
The real-life Lenny! I love working with him. ?
Even though he wouldn’t let you drive the police car!!. Oh sorry, Jake.
He was right! He had Jake’s best interests at heart. ???
I’m over halfway through The Detriment. Thoroughly enjoying it David.
Fantastic. ? Let me know your verdict when you’re done @David. ?
I certainly will.
I have to go for Kim Stone by @Angie
Thank you ?

Steele in the Logan Macrae series by Stuart MacBride!
They’re more sidekicks to each other but Scott and Bailey. Not about fiction.
Glen Branson…Peter James Roy Grace series…☆
Hathaway in Lewis. And Lewis in Morse.
Who is the author?
Colin Dexter created Morse. And Lewis. BBC then took Dexter’s characters and gave Lewis a new life and partner after Morse died. Same people apparently also made Endeavour, which is the younger version of Morse.
@A.K. Thanks!
I absolutely love Roberta Steele in the DS Logan McRae series by Stuart MacBride. This is a great question, @Susan! And it also makes me want to ask…what do people think makes a great sidekick?
Odette in @Robin‘s Lasser books.
Joe Pike, Elvis Cole’s sidekick (Robert Crais is the author).
Love Pike – prefer him to Elvis.
@Tony I was born in LA & enjoy the trips down memory lane.
@Kristine I’m a massive Bosch/Michael Connelly fan, but I love the work Crais does as well.
Captain Hastings.
Fogot Gus from Psych
EVERYONE from Psych ?! Have you heard there’s a movie coming?
No way – will that be before or After the FRIENDS – Movie? Haha just kidding- seriously?
And you’re right – I love the character Lassiter and of course the father!
For real! Though Timothy Omundson has had a stroke recently so not sure how involved he’ll be. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/psych-reunion-movie-details-1001345
Sad to read that
I am mean about Odmundson. He definitively would be missed!
