The Tattooist of Auschwitz – thoughts?
Lovely story inexpertly written. Worth reading though x
A great read – had no idea when I read it that it was a true story. I spent ages reading up on it afterwards
Is it ? It’s so badly written that I’m struggling and just not sure of it at all
Agreed – didn’t love it and so wanted to.
I believe the man it was about insisted his story be told by her. I don’t know the reasoning but I decided to ignore writing flaws and just try to appreciate his story. It was not perfect by any stretch but was a meaningful read for me.
He did so because he wanted it to be written by a non Jew with no real emotionally driven connection to the holocaust. Thus the tale would be completely impartial, it wouldn’t be coloured by a victims standpoint and be more factual.
I got the impression of a story being told but not really any sense of the characters beyond the obvious
@Ruth this made it feel all the more real for me. These characters were dehumanised and repressed to survive. I liked not getting too attached to anyone apart from our protagonist and his love. My heart couldn’t of taken it.
I liked it a lot.
Could have been great, the story is interesting. The author didn’t do it justice, I felt it was all quite vague and not engaging. I came away with no real sense of what the people involved were really like.
Read Rena’s Promise. It has so much detail and heart. I literally sobbed and got sick.
I’ll keep an eye out for that one, thanks.
@Louise you’re welcome. It’s a true story about sisters surviving 3 years in Auschwitz.
I’ve just added it to my TBR on Goodreads and read a little about it. I think it’s probably going to be a “better” (as in more true to fact, and more insightful) account when the person who’s gone through it also has a hand in writing the book.
Was interesting enough to keep me reading but that’s about it.
Loved that book
in my tbr pile
I was disappointed with it. Have read better written books on the subject
Absolutely loved it. Very hard hitting but read it in a day.
I loved it. I didn’t want it to end. I’m a sucker for love!
I really liked it. If you want to read a really good book about Auschwitz then give survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi a go, you won’t be disappointed
could not finish it .. will do so later excellent very sad
Liked it. It was a different POV than I’ve seen before. It has made for a richer, deeper understanding when reading other holocaust books as well. ?
I really want to read it. Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of it? Amazon is only pre-order and that’s where I typically buy my books.
just ordered from them
That’s where I purchased mine. I was too impatient to wait until September. Not a bad price plus free shipping!
I saw it in the works the other day x
Amazing very thought provoking book
any other suggestions? ordering freom book depository
Obviously a difficult topic, but I enjoyed the book. A love story in difficult times.
Very harrowing story Ruth but loved the book and felt like I was living it!!
I didn’t know it was based on a true story at first and really thought it was badly written but amazing story and glad I read it
A worthwhile read.
Meant to say terribly written I agree. Not the ‘best’ Holocaust book.
I listened to it on audible brilliant book
Mine’s on preorder. It’s coming in September.
Gutting,enlightening and heart wrenching.
Really well written having just abandoned a book I couldn’t get in to this is a huge contrast. I’ve not finished it yet but pleased it’s got me reading again
Loved it x
I’m on a long flight tomorrow so guess I’m going to be a wreck
Just seen it in Asda
Brilliant book x
Dying to read it!
Yeah. A good ?
Tough read but very worthwhile x
Loved it too, very romantic but also harrowing x
I can’t wait to read it???
The story is good, writing not.
Brilliant finished it in 2 nights couldn’t put it down
I feel like it’s one of the best holocaust reads as its driven by hope. We have read the gruelling gut wrenching stories about this period. Such bleakness, such world weary pain.
Couldn’t put it down!
I loved it
Well worth reading – just finished
Simple read, good content
Excellent read …..love story which survived such atrocities. Book 2 is in the process of being written at the moment.
Didn’t really get on with it.
Great easy read
Easy read. True story very powerful. A little obvious at times (without wanting to spoil the story)
Wish I could get it. Not out in the US till Sept
You can get it on Amazon
Didn’t appeal to me
I felt it was worth reading -but it wasn’t like it was a HUGE revelation to me. But it was well written and moving!!!
It was very badly written although the story is good. Shame it wasn’t written by someone who can write. Missed opportunity.
I just finished that book. I loved it
I loved it. Found it gripping and heart wrenching. It should be a set book for teens to understand the history.
Agree… great book for teens.
