Suite Francaise. It’s amazing.
The Book Thief!!!!! Also, I’m halfway through The Nightingale and really enjoying it ☺️
I’m reading Charlotte Gray at the moment and enjoying it.
Oh definitely this. It’s one of my all time favourites. I have never cried as much at a book as I did at this one. Very powerful.
The book thief ?
Also, anything by Ruta Sepetys. Her books are very raw and honest.
A helmet for my pillow.
Read All the Light We Cannot See and Birdsong if you haven’t already. I also enjoyed The Book Thief. Xx
All the light we cannot see and the nightingale, I’ve read both in the last couple of weeks x
Currently reading All the light we cannot see for the 2nd time. So beautifully written. Love The Nightingale too.
I’d recommend Eva by Meyer Levin. It’s out of print, I think, but you can get it second hand pretty cheaply from Amazon or Abe Books usually.
Girl at War by Sara novac is one of my faves!
The Nightingale x
Have you read the fatherland and follow up munster?
The lilac girls and the regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker, loved two brothers but failed twice at reading the Nightingale
Five chimneys
I’ve got that to read in my kindle, is it good?
Really liked it. A bit more harrowing than some of this topic I’ve read. The numbers/stats mentioned are just awful ?
I’ve just started island of secrets by Patrica Wils that goes back to Crete during the war
The Light Behind the Window or The Lavender Keeper are both really good. ?
The storyteller
Yes! I’m reading this at the moment, really enjoying it x
Loved this
The Alice Network by Kate Quinn.
Pam Jenoff has written a series of wartime books which I loved. The Diplomats Wife, The Kommandants Girl.
Kate Furnivalls Liberation or The Betrayal.
Mark Mills The Information Officer.
Sebastian Faulks Birdsong or Charlotte Gray.
Louis Dr Bernieres Captain Corellis Mandolin.
Dave Bolings Guernica.
Ooo Guernica, that will be interesting
Definitely The Nightingale as mentioned I also loved The Storyteller by Jodi Piccoult x
The Auschwitz goalkeeper…it’s written by a man from my local town, who just celebrated his 101st birthday a few days ago! He sells poppies in our local Tesco and is such a lovely man, it’s a recollection of what he went through
Between shades of gray,is very good ,about Stalin’s labour camps, story told through 15 yr old girls eyes
Loved this book!
Salt to the sea by ruth sepetys is another good one
The Book Thief xxx
A Gentleman in Moscow. Amor Rowles. Brilliant.
Oops – not a war book, but highly recommended read.
The Book Thief
The boy in the striped pyjamas.
“Any human heart”is my all time favourite book, “the luminous life of lily Aphrodite” “my dear I wanted to tell you” and also “nourishment” is brilliant- all set around the war rather than war itself
Well I can just ask you for recommendations next time @Lydia x
@Vicki I’ve got a bit of a thing for war time fiction ?
@Lydia I think I do remember you telling me that at Paula’s once I’ve made a note of the ones above thanks, hope to see you all soon xx

All the light we cannot see! Brilliant book!! x
Mila 18 by Leon Uris, set in the Warsaw Ghetto – absolutely brilliant book. My Enemy’s Cradle (although I forget the author) about the lebensborn homes in Germany during WWII. Jane Thynne’s series on Clare Vine starting with Black Roses, about an Anglo-German actress who becomes a spy – absolutely fantastic.
The absolutist by John Boyne. A beautiful story and a different point of view than most WWII stories I’ve read!
Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli, written as young adult but it’s my favourite war book ever ( apart from the nightingale)
Plus non fiction The bio of Nancy Wake , The white mouse
Also All quiet on the western front, The African Queen
