I did hear someone mention that James Patterson books have to be read in order so that the reader gets to know the background of the characters…but I have no idea about Daniel Silva.

James Patterson has several series which you would want to read in order. There is the womens murder club which starts with 1st to die. There is the camel club, and Alex Cross, plus heaps more. If you google him there are good lists on line that show you what is in each series etc.

He has plenty of stand alone novels as well.
