Fritz Leiber – “swords” series. Joe Abercrombie (read them in order, not strictly necessary but spoilers and a bit confusing). Just finished “Godblind” by Anna Stephens. It’s her first and the first of a trilogy. Enjoyed it a lot. Avoid Terry Brooks. The first Shannara book was a poor rip-off of LotR and it goes downhill from there. Raymond E Feist’s “Magician” is excellent. Again goes downhill from there and after the initial trilogy becomes a very obvious write-up of his D&D campaign. “Orcs” (can’t remember the author, sorry) was fun, and the follow-ups were up to the same standard. Robert Holdstock’s “Mythago Wood” is superb. There are more, and it takes a while before you realise they’ve disappeared up their own self-importance – your tolerance may vary.
Graceling by Cashore, Grave Mercy by Lafevers, Green Rider by Britain, The Blue Sword by McKinley, A Natural History of Dragons by Brennan, His Majesty’s Dragon by Novik
It depends what kind of fantasy you mean because I like many like J.K.Rowling, J.R.Ward and Naomi Novik. Or books by Jex Lane. ? well those aren’t traditional fantasy even thought Harry Potters nearest like this, but others more like paranormal romance or something like that.
@Jessica Naomi Novik will be good also. Temeraire series I mean. And Eragon. Not sure if you can find books like The Nettler Revolt or The Sorrow-deer Tamer by Siiri Enoranta and Memory of Water or City of Woven Streets by Emmi Itäranta. Those are also quite intetesting books with fantasy elements.
For urban fantasy besides the Dresden books by Jim Butcher try Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid series, The River of London series by Ben Aaronovitch, and the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka.

“Little, Big” by John Crowley. It’s a beautifully written book about magical places and people.
Glad someone other than me knows Little, Big (a book hailed by Harold Bloom!) <3
@Paolo I chose this book just because of the cover – it isn’t a genre I normally read – and I was captivated and I still think about it.
