Tana French is a wonderful mystery writer. She doesn’t have a series per se, but some of her characters show up in other books. They do not have to be read in order.
The Marie Dobbs series by Jacquelyn Winspear. So good, it has a strong female character, interesting mysteries, and a good historical setting.
Loved this series!
Should they be read in order?
@Barbara yes
Thanks l will
Donna Leon
Venice
@Barbara yep. I’ve lived there off and on over the past 50 years
Rhys Bowen. Kerry Greenwood. M.C. Beaton.
I’ll have to look up Greenwood. Love Beaton especially Hamish Macbeth series.
Deborah Crombie! I cannot stress how much I love her books!
Just checked out first book. Thanks!
They get better as they go on. There is only one I didn’t really like.
The Mr.Mercedes series by Stephen King or The Penn Cage series by Greg Iles
have you read any of josephine tey’s mysteries? i am obsessed & quite upset that i’ve read her whole catalogue ? i recommend anything of hers
My favorite is The Daughter of Time.
as a former classical actor (and forever a shakespearean at heart), i love that one, too—but how can you pick a favorite?? the conclusion of to love & be wise is so surprising and weirdly progressive for its time, and miss pym disposes is so tragic ? they’re all fascinating in their own way
Love Daughter of Time, l’m a British royals nut, all the way back to the Conquerer.
I’m just finishing the fifth book in the Elle Hatcher series by Alafair Burke. You might enjoy them.
I’ve really enjoyed the Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne mysteries by Julia Spencer-Fleming. Clare is an Episcopal priest and Russ is the local police chief.
I definitely agree about Deborah Crombie. BUT after I finished Louise Penny’s books I went looking for another Mystery series by a Canadian author. I found several but one in particular I recommend. The author is Anne Emory and she writes the Collins-Burke series about an attorney and an Irish Catholic priest, whose brilliant but a little squidgy on some of his vows. The stories mainly take place in Nova Scotia but also in NY, Rome, Dublin and Cape Breton. I highly recommend!
Have never found another quite like hers ?
The Poirot books by Agatha Christie. Also Miss Marple by the same author. The Miss Silver series by Patricia Wentworth.
P. D. James
Dorothy Sayers
Edmund Crispin
Susan Howatch
Michael Gruber
Sarah Caudwell
Following with glee!
Thank you all so much! I can’t wait to try some of theses “new to me” authors.
Michael Connelly and his Bosch books.
My husband has read these. I should too. Have watched the series on Amazon prime and enjoyed very much. Thanks for reminding me!
Joann Dobson’s series featuring a woman professor sleuth and mysteries concerning authors and their manuscripts. Great fun if you’re a lit person!
Anne Perry, William Monk series, Thames River police commander
C.J. Box, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett series
J.K Rowling’s fun Harry Potter series
Really enjoyed C.J. Box series! I have read one or two by Anne Perry but couldn’t read anymore of hers when I read about her personal history. Not sure what this says about me but it turned me off of her.
Number One Ladies Detective Agency
The Inspector Wexford books by Ruth Rendell
Julia Spencer Fleming’s Rev. Clare Fergusson series
I just saw in Louise Penny’s newsletter that she’s doing another Inspector Gamache novel that will be out in November. Some time has elapsed since the last one because her husband, the prototype for Gamache, died and she just couldn’t bring herself back to Three Pines for awhile. Then, she said, the characters came and got her and wanted another story! (Well, that’s not exactly how she put it, but that’s how I interpreted it, ha!) I will look for the website and add it.

Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Dept Q!
The Coffeehouse Mysteries by Cleo Coyle are delightful. I love the Greenwich Village coffeehouse setting, and the recipes in each book are a nice bonus.
I have added at least 20 books on my library wish list in the last few days. Thank you all so much! This is really a great group!
I love the Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
