ok everyone, then its moving up on my list. Its been on my bookshelf so long that I think the dust is like an inch thick 🙁 That being said, I just started a Gentleman in Moscow, so will follow after that!
She wrote several good books and short stories. Rebecca is the best, of course. The Birds is the short story that provided inspiration for the Hitchcock movie but it bears little resemblance. Don’t Look Now is a good short story too.
IMHO, no. My book club picked this last winter. Because she tells the end at the front of the story, I had a hard time emotionally investing in any of the characters. The story telling wasn’t very engaging for me either.
Yes it is! It may be kind of “wordy” by today’s standards, but I get something new out of it each time I read it. Rebecca was made into a movie just a few years after being published.
Mrs Danvers in the movie is the same actress who was in “and then there were none” as the small minded gossip who knitted all the time. Great movie of Agatha Christie’s novel!!!
If this is the first book my Daphne du Maurier, yes. I read My Cousin Rachel by her first and actually liked that overall story more, but I still really like Rebecca and her style.
I quit reading it 1/3 of the way through. I could not bring myself to care about anything that was happening. But with all of these positive responses it sounds like I should try again.
For me, it was a book that I enjoyed much more in retrospect than when I was reading it. The main character frequently gets caught up in these scenarios that she creates in her head. I kept wanting to tell her to “shake it off.” After I read it, I did a bit of reading of how the Oscar winning movie was made and that pulled it all together for me.
I read it as a teenager and have read it several times since, last time for a book club. I love the gothic aspects and some of the underlying themes. Another one of hers that ive read several times is “The Scapegoat”. Kind of an improbable p!ot but intriguing nevertheless.
“Rebecca” is the most timeless classic story of Love and Evil I’ve ever read. Manderley, it’s story and characters will stay with you always. It is a masterpiece and my favorite classic. I hope you give it a chance and let us all know what you think.
I’ve just finished it and really did not like most of it. Was to me on the same theme as Gatsby with the abundance of privilege the wealthy expected. Decided to finish it but felt was a waste of my reading time.
Why on Earth did you force yourself to finish it if you weren’t enjoying it? As somebody who reads almost exclusively to escape, the hardest lesson for me to learn was that the world will not self destruct if I don’t finish a book. Life’s too short to read bad books.
the book was more suspenseful, I had more a feeling of dread and fear than in the movie, the movie , to me, made it seem more about the love story. In the book you could really feel Rebecca hanging over the house
My daughter Catherine is named after Anya Seton Katharine. I did the Catherine because there are a few family members with that name. But, she is named after Katherine.

Book was much better than the movie.
Yes. The book is better than the movie, but the movie is excellent.
Yes. Better.
I loved it when I first read it many decades ago.
I only read it because it kept coming up on lists of scary books. It was good but definitely not scary.
I’d say more suspenseful than scary
I wasn’t a fan. Maybe too much hype going in? I just read it last year.
Yes.
Oh be still my heart! Indeed it is! And watch movie as well!

I was pretty “meh” about it.
Based on all these Rebecca lovers, I did a “hold” at my local library.
Yes
I just read My Cousin Rachel and really liked it but have not read Rebecca yet.
Out of every book I’ve ever read, Rebecca is in my top 3 ❤❤❤
Yes, it’s one of my favorites and has been since I first read it years ago.
I loved the book. I loved the movie. After Rebecca, I read other books by DuMauier(sic).
It is really good. And the movie is also very, very good which is not always the case. But, as usual, the book is better.
YES!
Yes
ok everyone, then its moving up on my list. Its been on my bookshelf so long that I think the dust is like an inch thick 🙁 That being said, I just started a Gentleman in Moscow, so will follow after that!
One of my favourites of all time!
Yes!
I really liked it, but I was a hormonal teenager when I read it. I may see it differently through older eyes.
Oh, yeah. Read it the first time in 9th grade and a couple of times thereafter.
I read it for the first time this year. It was good, but it didn’t make my favorites list.
Yes…you can’t go wrong with Daphne du Maurier!
Oh yes! And it made a great movie also!
Yes, it most definitely is.
YES. I get sick if I read while in a car, but I had to finish the book while on a road trip and it was worth the carsickness!
YES!!
Yes,
I love hearing all the enthusiasm about the various books. I’m putting Rebecca on my re-read list! It’s been a while!
Rebecca Boiles , you make it sound so good, I am adding it to my To Read list.
Have it on the to be read list, but perhaps it needs to move up in priority.
I liked it.
I hope so! I have it on my nightstand to read right now.
Rebecca is marvelous as is Jamaica Inn
It was the book I read as a teen that made me love reading!
Read it for the first time in undergrad, read it every year.
audible has Peter Capaldi reading The Birds & Don’t Look Now. Cheap & really good.
I bet if you check with your library, they have the Hoopla app for free audiobook downloads.
Never read it !
Yes!
Yes! Book and movie both great!
Yes Yes and Yes!!!!
Yes. It totally earns all of its praise.
I loved it.
Absolutely. Be patient with the first bit. This book is worth your time. I’ll look forward to hearing your reaction.
Definitely be patient
Joan Fontaine and Lawrence Olivier. Can’t remember the evil lady’s name…
Rebecca Boiles she was so good in the movie!
I love it, and have read it many times but my husband read it and did not agree.
One of my top 5 all-time books is “Five Smooth Stones” by Ann Fairbairn.
@Jeneane I loved that book and many people have never heard of it
I dreamed I returned to Manderlay…..
Absolutely!
My three favorite books all involve an old house with a mystery Jane Eyre Rebecca and great expectations
Very much so!
Just finished it last week after loving in back in high school. I felt the same way all these years later. Such an enjoyable book
Ok, I have tried this book several times and haven’t been able to get into it. With all this praise, I will give it another shot.
Indeed it is!!
i read it in 6th grade and again in college!!! it is a good time and the foundation in that kind of suspense drama…good stuff!
Yes! I read it for the first time last year and it immediately shot to the top of my “favorites” list.
Loved it as a teenager but haven’t reread it lately.
YES!!!
Found a single-book collection of Du Mauier. She is such a beautiful writer! I’ve read several in the collection but not Rebecca nor My Cousin Rachel.
She wrote several good books and short stories. Rebecca is the best, of course. The Birds is the short story that provided inspiration for the Hitchcock movie but it bears little resemblance. Don’t Look Now is a good short story too.
It’s difficult finding her work. I’d love to read The Birds.
@Terri, I bought a few at a senior living book sale. Hungry Hill is a good one.
@Pam and the movie from Don’t Look Now was great
@Terri I was shocked when I realized that she is the author of The Birds.
I’ve read lots of them from the library!
Yes. As a matter of fact my daughter is named after the book.
Yes! I liked it very much, and you do get something new every time you read it. I find that The Great Gatsby is like that. I reread both periodically.
It is well worth the read. Can’t say enough great things about Rebecca
Mrs Danvers in the movie is the same actress who was in “and then there were none” as the small minded gossip who knitted all the time. Great movie of Agatha Christie’s novel!!!
The Storytelling is excellent ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So I should stick with it? I’m on chapter 3.
If this is the first book my Daphne du Maurier, yes. I read My Cousin Rachel by her first and actually liked that overall story more, but I still really like Rebecca and her style.
Hang in there,it only gets better.
Yes!! A million times yes!
Very innovative story line. That is why I liked it. It was not my favorite though.
Read it, yes! Mrs Danvers is much more creepy than in the movie!
Yes! But if you’ve read Jane Eyre, expect a lot of eerie similarities…
Good point, but such different times.
Anything by the author is a good to great read. I don’t collect many authors’ books but she is one!
If you read it everynight you will dream you’ve gone to manderley again LOL
There’s a game of famous opening lines to books and that is one of them!
It’s quite good but My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier is even better!
I also preferred My Cousin Rachel.
I listened to My Cousin Rachel and it was really good! Fabulous reader (Audible) Guess I’d saw it was equally good.
It’s good but I don’t think it lives up to the hype I just read it in January.
Yes .it was a very first novel I read in high school. Have read it again .
YES it is.
Yes. It is my current book club choice.
One of the best, with THE best opening line of any novel I have ever read…..
Yes!

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again . . .
My favorite book ever!
Absolutely!
Yes!
Yes, loved it
I want to read…
Yep. Even richer read with a more modern mindset than when it was written.
Yes.
I quit reading it 1/3 of the way through. I could not bring myself to care about anything that was happening. But with all of these positive responses it sounds like I should try again.
Please give it another chance
Yes yes yes! A must read!
A resounding Yes!!!
“Last night I dreamed we were at Manderly…” that’s from memory, will check book later…
Haven’t read it since I was very young. Need to read-read.

Daphne duMaurier. “Rebecca” is one of my favorite books.
@Kathy , Daphne du Maurier.
@Janice thanks!
I’ve started it 3 times and put it aside. Maybe I’ll finish it some day.
Best first line ever. Memorable characters….Mrs. Danvers, brrrrr

Just added it to my TBR list based on all the love in this post. However, I try to stay away from books with that many pages. 🙁
❤️Loved this book even though I grew exasperated with the main character.
It’s simply terrific!

It is excellent but honestly I like her book Jamaica Inn even better.

I picked this nook up last week and still haven’t started ! I am hoping to get started soon.
Yes! I ❤️ed it!
@Lori So many said it was great so hoped the end would justify the time, but nope Lesson learned as I usually do not finish if a slow go?
Absolutely
Very good in my opinion. Love, hate, and horror all in one story.
And a little bit of mystery.
@Lori .. Yes, I love it!
I read this recently for the first time and LOVED it!! Would highly recommend!
yes
I liked the book better than any of the movies
the book was more suspenseful, I had more a feeling of dread and fear than in the movie, the movie , to me, made it seem more about the love story. In the book you could really feel Rebecca hanging over the house
Not really. It’s good just not great.
I don’t know who everybody is, but I loved this book when i read it as a teen, many lightyears ago.
Yes
The 1940 movie was terrific – with Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier.
yessss!
Oh yeah!

Yes!
Absolutely
One of all-time favorites!
Wonderful??
It is my favorite
Yes! The movie is also very good. I think there may be several versions of the movie.
Yes—but don’t read it as a love story. It’s a study in jealousy/lack of self-confidence in a mystery with a twist.
@Rebecca agreed
Several great readers in my book club didn’t like it, but I think they had mistaken it for a love story.
I haven’t read it in years. I think it is time for a reread.
Netflix is making a new remake.
Indeed!
Yes!
yes definitely
YES! It’s right up there with Jane Eyre!
The book is wonderful and the original movie also
Yes?
Depends on your point of view. Read and see what you think.
You bet your sweet bippy! Excellent! My book club is reading it in October. Halloween selection.
My daughter is named Rebecca becIsenof this book.
@Beatrice say what??
Mine too!
My daughter Catherine is named after Anya Seton Katharine. I did the Catherine because there are a few family members with that name. But, she is named after Katherine.
