Is it just me who really hate books that are too gruesome? Just don’t appeal to me at all!

Author’s find a niche and it’s a golden pocket.
I don’t read horror I did as a kid. Grew out of them.
I’m with you
I enjoy them , but it’s not just you who hate them.
Yes dear its only u
It’s a mood thing with me, and the same with TV shows. There are times it doesn’t bother me at all and in fact I like it, and then times when I cringe, stop reading or change the channel and stop watching a show I previously loved. Violence against old people, kids and animals is something I can’t stomach.
I don’t mind some gruesome books but some authors tend to overdo it – no real story just blood and gore.
I read mostly crime or psychological thrillers but am known to read the odd Josephine Cox type for a change.
Gory the better for me
@Lin me too!
??
i love them
Love them .
I don’t like the gruesome books…..just no need. x x x
Oh yes there is x
I’d your a vampire. X
Dont do vampires . Just serial killers
Lol
I love gruesome!
Agatha Christie will always be my favourite author. Started reading them as a kid.
I love gruesome books!!
I love em
The gruesome the better ?
For you readers who like gruesome try Chris Carter The Caller if you haven’t already
Chris Carter is my go to gruesome guy… the weird and most mind blowing books get my attention ?
@Mandy any other suggestions please
@June if you want gruesome, check out Chelsea Cain’s books. Although I don’t think I’ve read anything to beat Chris Carter’s for gruesome yet
@Joanne ok thanks for the suggestion . Richard Montenari is also another author I enjoy.
@Joanne just downloaded Heartsick loving it already thanks
@June I do love the way she writes. I’ve only read the first 3 in the series still got the last three to read ?
Mo Hayder writes pretty gruesome books… but if the story line is good and it is interesting, the ‘gruesomeness’ (as it were) should enhance & not detract from the book.
Gritty, dark, gruesome. Love it.
Have read all Chris carter’s! Love them! Very gruesome! ??
Ooh no i love reading disgusting stuff
I love the grizzly ones more.
Love em
I love some gore!
No, I love gruesome books.
Love them.
I read the books with gore but it takes me awhile to digest them.
Love them
The great thing about books is that they are so subjective. My latest book, Death Dolls, I didn’t think is too gruesome but a blogger told me that it flicked a mental switch like when she watched the SAW movies. ?♀️
I like them to be gruesome. Got to be well written though and not just put in there for shock value
Nope not into them….. ?Though I don’t mind a tiny bit in relation to the story I like physiological thrillers and crime books it’s the mystery that I enjoy not blood and gore!! x
Love the gruesome details ?
I’m tired of them now, because so few cases are like that in real life….
I don’t mind gore, it’s sadistic cruelty that I don’t like to read about. Most police procedurals bring you in “after the event” so you don’t have to “see” it happening. I can’t bear cruelty to animals in any form so would not read another Chris Carter p, after what happened to the cat in Gallery of the Dead
I won’t read that one then Joanna
i like them.
I can read the gruesome books but turn it into a movie and I cannot stand to watch the gruesome bits.
I’m the same Tracey
me too
Nah. Bring on the gore!
Love gruesome
I don’t like gratuitous gore. Or gratuitous anything, really. I have a vivid imagination. No need to spoon-feed it, just drop me a few subtle clues, I’ll join up the dots.
I grew up on horror, gore fab here. It is ok to be different though we all like different stuff ? xxx
@Llainy am I allowed to mention my book here?
@Llainy oh God, sorry! *farrant feels like a right fool lol* ?
I grew up being told to hate women’s girls novels
Love a gruesome book
I’m not into gruesome, more suspense/thrill for me, but I expect that’s very subjective and opinions differ!
Dislike all grue
Love gruesome books – crime, horror, thrillers – gimme gore anytime!
I completely agree with you
I love ’em…
It depends. Sometimes a story requires details and mood-setting that can only be provided by some graphic violence. But, it certainly can be overdone, and sometimes it is really not necessary. Same goes for sex scenes. Think about Dracula. You can’t really appreciate the horror and the sexual aspects of the character without a detailed description of the seduction and assault on Lucy. How much is too much? Well, eye of the beholder, I suppose.
In my new novel there are some pretty graphic descriptions of the murders committed by the serial killer. In order for the reader to get inside his mind and to understand how the police are working to catch him based on help from an FBI profiler, so having all the information about the murders is rather essential to the story. I hope none of my readers are too creeped out by the graphic scenes, and so far I have not seen that in any of the feedback and reviews, but I always knew it was a potential issue.
if anyone is creeped out then are they really a serious crime fiction addict? Lol
True, Mandy – but not all readers are “addicts.” LOL ??
just bought crow girl which is suppose to be very gruesome. had looked at it a few times and wondered if it might be to much but had some excellent review along with some that said it was to much.
I don’t mind Gore if it is relevant to story ,
There is a difference between gratuitous-gruesome and realistic-in-context. Sometimes stories need gritty realism as part of the narrative and character development (or past) of the protagonist.
I had this quote in a review: “Initially repelled by the violence in this novel, I felt, as in Stieg Larsson’s novels, the visceral satisfaction of seeing justice meted out to the abusers of women.”
Gruesome is okay with me… gruelot is too much, though.
No horror is one of my pet fiction loves books by Graham Masterton,Simon Clark,Shaun Hutson the more horrifying the better.
