I would say it is VERY loosely based on the book. Most of the nerdish 80s, 90s content is gone in favour of highlighting Halliday’s rudimentary relationship with Keira. Plus it didn’t escape the compulsory Spielberg cliches like tacky exalted speaches to the world, sacrifice, unidimensional characters, etc.
It’s quite different but also good, imo. I kept it on my student summer reading list because the movie is different enough that they can’t cheat that way.
Just finished watching it with my husband and son! I didn’t know about the book or movie til someone mentioned in this group. So I suggested it to them. I love reading books and then watching the movie to see how they compare. I haven’t read it but the movie was so good. And if it was that good, the book must be even better, right? My son LOVED it! Might be a good motivator for him to pick up a book again. Lol. ?
@Tamzin ok. He’s 12. He loves 80’s pop culture. So I think that is one of the things he really liked about the movie. He used to love to read but this past year he’s gotten more interested in other things. So it’s got to really grab his attention for him to want to read again. I’ll look into Armada. Thanks! ?
I liked but didn’t love the book. I think if I hadn’t been listening to the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton I might not have finished it. I felt the same way about the movie – I liked but didn’t love it.
I learned long ago not to try and compare books to movies. I just remind myself a movie was *based* on the book and try to enjoy it as a separate story from the book I read. That way you can like a movie for itself even if it’s not the same as the book. Also you can be disappointed if a movie isn’t good but you can’t be disappointed if it’s really different from the book or book series. 🙂
STOP!!!!!
The movie is barely like the book..I was disappointed personally

The movie is the worst adaptation of a book ever. My family loves the book. I was so upset that I cried.
I loved the book and thought the movie was great – they made a lot of necessary changes but kept the spirit of the book.
I agree! I loved both!
It’s quite different but also good, imo.

My husband liked the movie for the nostalgia but didn’t read the book. It was so different I couldn’t enjoy the movie at all.

Haha! I just showed my son this post and he says, “ok, I might have to read the book now.” See? A good motivator indeed. ?
Depending on his age Armada may be a better start it is also Cline.

You’re in for a surprise
It was pretty good! Yes, they made some changes, but they pretty much had to or it would have been a 4 hour movie.
Not the best interpretation but an ok movie x
Great movie, loosely based
Good movie you should watch it
My 16yr old has read this book over and over. He also loves the movie has different as it was
I love the movie so much. Its on par with the book with just how good it is ?

So bad I fell asleep at the movies. I have never fell asleep during a movie.
