Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, if you’ve never read it. I couldn’t put it down the first time I read it, and was afraid to be alone. So my friend was getting ready to go out and was in the bathroom curling her hair so I went in there and sat on the toilet seat to read. ?
My friend Jo who I worked with (she was 65 I was 25) shared a love of horror. Jo bought the book when it came out and when she handed it to me to read she said “make sure not to start this unless your off the next day”. I followed her advice and I was glad I did because i stayed up all night to finish it. She was my book soulmate. ?❤
noooo I cried for days afterwards, even in the authors letter Stephen says his wife hated it and it never should have been published horrible evil book!
Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Preston and Childs are supremely good at what they do. King has several standouts for me with It and Gerald’s Game at the top for me. Koontz’s Intensity had me reading it in one go, was too afraid to quit. Preston and Childs Relic had me jumping at any noise and their book The Bridge still gives me nightmares if I think about it. Joe Hill is fast becoming a favorite and Chelsie Cain also.
The newspaper!! Sorry- my joke. You could try Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon. I read it in the 70s and found it so then. I don’t know how it has stood the test of time.

@Jennifer seemed appropriate after catching bits of the hearing today.

Shocking perhaps, but I wouldn’t call it terrifying.

Kill Creek= Scott Thomas… a wickedly haunted house story.

I was literally scared to turn the pages!! It was a long time ago though. I should try again.
Firestarter.
King’s Full Dark, No Stars really left me rattled. I still think about the “Big Driver” story.
The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay sounds terrifying!
Salem’s Lot gets my vote, too
Oh I just remembered another one that freaked me out. Dean Koontz, Whispers. crazy ending. scary scary scary.
I didn’t want to be alone at night for a long time after reading it
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. I couldn’t finish it!
The Ghost Story by Peter Straub
Dean Koontz Intensity

Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
Pet Cemetery was the one I could not finish. ?
I stopped reading his books after that. Too scary but maybe I will try again.
Joe Hill writes some good horror novels.

The Rats ?
Joe McKinney and Mira Grant do great Zombie books.
Anna Dressed in Blood. Not sure if it would terrify you…but for me, it had a good story, a mystery and some creepiness thrown in.
IT got to me. It just unsettled and scared me. The Silence of the Lambs is a good read. Oh and Along came a Spider…
Any Thomas Harris book

Harvest Home was a good one!

Another vote for Salems Lot by Stephen King. Terrified me.
