I’m looking for historical horror recommendations – maybe something set in the 1700-1800s?

The Terror by Dan Simmons.
Not really horror but somewhat disturbing “devil in the White City”
I’m sure you have read Interview with a Vampire.
I’m not sure about this one, but I’m sure there are true crime books of H.H. Holmes or Jack the Ripper.
The Phantom of the Opera
Novel by Gaston Leroux
One of my all time favourites! I was so engrossed in reading a suspenseful chapter that I kept reading in class… My art teacher took it away from me and only gave it back a couple of days later! Traumatizing experience! ?
I guess Dracula and Frankenstein go without saying…
I love both, especially Dracula!
The Devil in the White City set in late 1800s about the serial killer during the world’s fair in Chicago, with much interesting detail about the development of the fair, as well.
Such a good book
Wieland by Charles Brockden Brown, short stories of Washington Irving, The Woman in White (more suspense than horror) by Wilkie Collins
Oops, I was listing books written in 1700-1800s
Devil in the White city
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
Not from the 1800’s but an electrifying read
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is a favorite of mine!
I loved this one. Looks like it’s being made into a movie.
The Little Stranger https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0023EFB32/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sjjABb2AED494
Oops. Looks like it’s post WWII.
Frankenstein
Definitely Perfume by Patrick Suskind. Set in 18th century France, its an unsettling story about a serial killer. Different.
I really like Meaning of Night by Micheal Cox (it is a series). It is similar to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. When you look that one up on GoodReads there are a few others that are similar listed.
Oh also The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes. (also has a second novel).
Another one that isn’t necessarily horror, but murder mystery is Murder as a Fine Art by David Morrell. (*Can you tell I kind of like this genre)
.
Turn of the Screw– Henry James
.
The Little a stranger was really good

The Alienist by Caleb Carr
The Monk by Matthew Lewis. It’s gothic and classic and hilarious.
The Scarlett Mansion by Allan W. Eckert.
Have you read The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova? A new take on Dracula. I really enjoyed it.
Drood by Dan Simmons.
All that Lives
Frankenstein
Edgar Allen Poe?
Absolutely!
