I’m looking for a good horror book to start. What are your all time favorites or recommendations? Thank you!

If you haven’t already, go with H.P. Lovecraft!
My son recommended Lovecraft too. I’ll check his books out. Thank you,
The Rite: The Making Of Modern Exorcist, true story
Thank you!
also it has VERY very very good movie based on it. The Rite (2011)
@Anna does that have Anthony Hopkins in the movie? I think I saw it on Netflix….
yep
You could check out Cemetery Dance Publishing and please let me know if you’ll buy one because I have a giftcard of them and I probably will not use it. So maybe we could trade. ?
Thank you. I’ll check it out ☺️
Ohmygosh thanks!! ??
Just curious, what do you find attractive about the horror genre?
Well…it’s hard to say. I’ve always liked horror since I was young. I think I started with mysteries and kind of moved over to horror like with Agatha Christie novels. I don’t just read horror though. I love a lot of variety really. ☺️
I genuinely love to be scared. It is the only emotion that can take me out of reality.
Ghost Story by Peter Straub
Thanks Renee! I actually read this just recently. Was good!
My old report cards.
Lol
Talisman, Black House, Mayfair Witches, wolf gift… sorry my books are all packed as I’m moving or I’d be able to give you more.
Thanks. Never read any of these. Appreciate your help!
Any time I love horror and sci fi. Happy to help.
The Rats by James Herbert
MR James stories, especially “Oh whistle and I’ll come to you, my lad”
?
Thank you!
No worries, there’s no one scarier than MR James honestly ?
never heard of these. Thanks for recommending them
Very few horror freak me. 172 Hours on the Moon freaked me. I know some didn’t like it. Check it out on Goodreads
Will do. Thanks!
Just read synopsis…looks intriguing. Thanks again!
You’re welcome. If you read it, hope you enjoy like I did
The Shining!
The Shining is really good book! Thanks for suggestion. ☺️
Dracula
One of my favorites! Thanks
Salem’s Lot – Stephen King
Love it. Thank you
@Karen Of all King’s books -This is the only one I found to be really scary! Also, stories edited by Alfred Hitchcock (Alfred Hitchcock presents ) this is where I read The Birds – very frightening !
Salem’s Lot
I remember when I first read this when I was young…had to sleep with the lights on for some time. Lol
@Karen Same here, Karen. I couldn’t look out my window at night for several months. LOL
lol
John Saul or Stephen King
Love both writers. I haven’t read John Saul in some time. Thanks for suggestions. ☺️
THE VOICE OF THE NIGHT by Dean Koontz.
Dean Koontz is one of my all time favorite authors. I have not read this one yet though. Just finished the Odd Thomas series not too long ago. Thanks for recommendation. ?
I have also read a few of his books, but then fell out of love with the genre horror as a whole. This book is smooth and reads like a YA horror novel. Must have read it 15 years ago! Had to google for the name of the book!
@Abhinav thank you
Salems lot Stephen king
Thanks
?
The Ritual by Adam Nevill
Omg…I just watched this film on Netflix this weekend. It freaked me out. Didn’t know it was based on a book.
i read the book several years ago and loved it. Loved the movie too!
@Tiffany I’m gonna have to read the book now. Lol
The Silence by Tim Lebbon was pretty good too.
Ill check it out! Thanks ?
I haven’t seen the movie, but I was disappointed in the book. It grabbed me from the beginning, kept me hanging on (and scared), and then I thought it sort of petered out, and wasn’t scary any more.
Something Evil This Way Comes.
I actually read this last summer. Was really good. I agree ?
Salem’s Lot
The Passage series
Awesome. Thanks!
The Other by Thomas Tryon
Thank you
Hex!
Thanks!
Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon. Well written-not ghostly type horror. Creepy Salem type village with rituals
Will do! Thanks
Thomas Tryon is great!
@Francine Harvest Home was the first I’ve read of him. Want to read more! As I was reading HH, I kept envisioning Bette Davis — something familiar about the plot. Then it hit me that this was on TV when I was a kid but I didn’t remember anything about t other than being creepy
@Ken Have you read The Other?
@Francine I have not. Will def put on my TBR list
The exorcist
more suspense but two little girls in blue by marhy higgins clark is amaze-balls
Thank you
The Stand
Best good vs Evil book ever!
Bird Box by Josh Malerman
I’m reading this right now – it’s great
It definitely is!
I read this just recently. Was really good!
The Silence by Tim Lebbon
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. I am also about to start this book.
I read this. Was
@Francine Wasn’t this his first published? I believe he also used the name Joe Hill King. I liked this and I also liked his latest collection of short stories. Everything else? Not so much.
Thank you for suggestion!
Thank you!
Handmaidens tale is a horror to me
Thank you
darren shan (i thought that was horror)
Many stories come to mind. What type of horror are you after?
Im open to anything
@Karen Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite.
@Christine awesome. Thanks!
@Karen You are welcome 🙂
My first horror reding was Edgar Allan Poe, many years ago, when I was a teenager.
Last Exit to Brooklyn
Thanks. Ill check it out
Hubert Selby, author of Last Exit to Brooklyn, wrote a book that was so horrible that he himself couldn’t read it for decades. It’s called “The Room”. I have it on my Kindle, but want to make sure I’ve got a few nights when I don’t need to sleep first. 🙂
Thank you all so much for all the great suggestions! They will keep me busy for some time! ?
The mist by stephen king
Loved the movie. Will try the book. Thanks
@Karen The book is great, and I think the movie is a great adaptation of it, so you should enjoy it
The Stand by Stephen King is my all time favorite ?
It is up there for me too!
Dead of Night by Jonathan Maberry
Never read this. Will look into it. Thanks!
I’m with @Marina . . . The Stand is in my Top 5 I actually will include Salem’s Lot
The Stand in is actually my favorite Stephen King novel, however I found Salem’s Lot to be way scarier.
I have to chuckle because the first time I read @Karen ‘s post I thought it said good humor book — (probably because I had not yet sipped on my first cup of coffee nor did I have my glasses on) Subsequently, I typed in Dave Barry Turns 40. I was an instant away from clicking “send” when I reread her post and thoughts YIKES — Dave Barry is NOT horror 🙂 What a way to start the day :
@Tesa lol…. thats funny! I like humor too ?
I love The Stand too!
Poppy Z Brite, if you’re fine with gore and graphic violence (Exquisite Corpse, Lost Souls, Drawing Blood). Susan Hill if you like ghost stories (The Woman in Black, The Small Hand, The Man in the Picture). John Saul for psychological horror/thriller.
Thank you @Lysa! Im up for anything!
It by Stephen king
One of my favorites! ?
Heart-Shaped Box and NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, It and Bag of Bones by Stephen King
Loved bag of bones! Ill definitely check out Heart shaped box! Thanks
You’re welcome! Happy reading!
Someone mentioned a book by Hubert Selby in here, Last Exit to Brooklyn. He also wrote this one, which was apparently so disturbing that he himself couldn’t read it for 20 years. I have it on my Kindle, but haven’t tried reading it yet. Not sure if this qualifies as horror or just disturbing/scary as hell.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Room_(novel)
Was this made into a movie? Ill definitely check it out! Thanks
Not as far as I know. There was a movie that came out recently called “The Room”, but I don’t think it was Selby’s novel.
i remember my son saying he went to a movie called The Room and it wasn’t the one with the lady and her son held hostage in a room. So i just asked my son and he said he saw Room by Tommy Wiseau which is a cult classic I guess. Supposed to be the worst film ever. Lol
So… sorry for my mix up and thanks for the suggestion! Lol
The stand.
The Amityville Horror.
Scary story. But really good!
A new one I just read is No Ordinary Girl. It is a very disturbing story, but I couldn’t put it down. ? https://eclecticreview.wordpress.com/2018/01/25/blogtourreview-no-ordinary-girl-by-cheryl-elaine-cherylelaine15/
Cool. Thank you!
Anything by Stephen King
I agree!
an oldy S.K….”The Stand”…. better than the movie and believe it could happen…..so prepare yourself
I agree and I agree! Lol
Yeap. Stephen King
Try P mattern. She is awesome.
