I saw Jamie Ford at a book fair earlier this year. No one had heard of him before and now everyone locally has read him. His latest,Love and other consequences is also very good.
I liked the idea of the story better than the actual story. The ending felt off to me, but I loved having a story focused on a dark chapter of our history. We still don’t talk about Japanese Internment enough.
I had never even heard of the Japanese Internment until I read “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.” I emailed Jamie Ford and told him thank you for bringing light to something I should have been taught in my American History classes but never was. Couldn’t believe this was never told to me and still isn’t taught in our schools.
Jamie Ford is one of my favorite authors!!!!! I just finished “Songs of Willow Frost” and am starting “Love and other Consolation Prizes.” I love that his stories are set in Seattle. It’s fun to read stories set in familiar places!
I’m lucky to live near Seattle and have visited the hotel a few times where the artifacts are stored in the basement and yes I was typing this the same time as Gwen!
I read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet several years ago – a really, really, really good book! I’m now reading Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson. If you are a fan of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. I think you would also like Snow Falling on Cedars.
Sounds like a great story, another for my TBR! It sounds similar to The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende. It’s a wonderful love story set around WWII and the interment camps as well.
I started out liking this book but eventually ended up disliking it because of all the errors in timeline. Some things just didn’t exist at the time this story took place.
@Kristine Actually the royalty rate is virtually the same. But the publisher makes way more money on an ebook (since there’s no printing/delivery cost).
Just finished “Willow” today and am hoping to find an autographed copy of “Love and Other Consolation Prizes” at Aunties Bookstore tomorrow. Was bummed to miss you when you were there last year?
If any of you get the chance to ever go to a speaking event with Jamie Ford, drop everything and go! You will thank me! One of the most engaging and entertaining speakers I have ever heard!
Loved this book too as well as Snow Falling on Cedars! ! Another great read on this subject that I really and surprisingly and thoroughly enjoyed was Silent Honor by Danielle Steele. Give it a try a great read as well as educational on this time period in our country.
Me too. I was born in Seattle and raised knowing nothing about this piece of history. My husband and I took a tour of the Asian Art Museum recently and this a an adjacent tour.

@Michaél, I learned about Japanese internment when I visited Washington state. I was 33 years old and sadly had never heard of it.
@Michaél I read recently that 66% of millenials don’t know what Auschwitz was. 🙁

Jamie Ford does an author get more revenue from ebook or sale in book store? (Gotta keep the arts alive?)
It is one of my all time favorite books! Keep writing!
@Kristine Actually the royalty rate is virtually the same. But the publisher makes way more money on an ebook (since there’s no printing/delivery cost).
Good job!!
