I love worlds with very specific rules of magic, like Allomancy in Mistborn. Any recommendations for series like that?

For all it’s flaws this is one thing Christopher paulini did well with erogon
It’s been so long since I started that series! Maybe I should revisit it.
@Cora don’t, it’s derivative. Barely better than plagiarism, but the magic system was well defined similar to Sanderson.
@Richard Got it. I’ll save my time for better things.
Does *anyone* prefer books where the magic system is loose, like in Lord of the Rings?
LOTR is very popular, so someone must.
I often hear the distinction between hard and soft magic (systems). I like them both but I think I prefer the mystery and beauty of soft magic (ones like LOTR). Especially like magic that is passive and inborn, like elves being lightfooted or their wonderful craftsmanship.
Have you read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell?
@Than yes, loved it
I like those terms. I went through a season where I preferred soft magic. Now I’m leaning toward hard magic. I think there’s great things about both.
Lightbringer (brent weeks) has a really unique system
I love that series!
Yes, it’s very well explained even if the rules aren’t written in stone.
Draconis memoriam series I think it’s called. It’s by Anthony Ryan. You get different powers based on different types of dragon blood you drink. I only read the first chapter before I bought it but it’s high on my tbr pile.
I haven’t heard of this one. I’m checking it out now.
The Warren’s and holds system of malazan series is a good 1
Thanks!
Black prism by Brent Weeks.
Love it.
Like every other book by Brandon Sanderson
I’m definitely checking out the rest of his books. ?
The Magicians Guild by Trudi Caravan
This looks good! I’m adding it to my TBR list.
It’s a trilogy I generally jump back to when I want a quick reread that I need to resee something
Frostborn: The Grey Knight by Jonathan Moeller
Inheritance cycle. With added bonus of dragons
I started this one a while back. Someone else mentioned it as well. ?
Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
His magic is like electricity: it cannot be created, it can only change form
I love The Name of the Wind. I read it right after Mistborn. ?
Throne of glass series
Yes! I do like that one. I couldn’t get into War Storm though. What did you think of that one?
That’s my second favorite
The Demon Cycle by Peter V. Brett.
The Thousand Names by Django Wexler.
Thanks!
I love Django Wexler.
Anne Bishops gem series. And hope for a high ranking one. I loved these books
