I have a paper white got it as a gift in October and I LOVE it. Pages look like book pages can read in the dark or in sunlight no problems best gift I have ever got my boyfriend pays attention lol
I like my Kindle fire because it doubles as a tablet, but it doesn’t have the battery life that one of the lower level Kindles do, like the Paperwhite.
Nook Glow light but I’m not crazy about it. Here is what to consider . The Amazon platform is much easier to use and usually has better prices. What I liked about mine when I got it was that it is dust, drop and water proof and it’s Paperwhite so it was perfect for poolside and home with kids. Kindle may have a similar product now.
I like paper books better, but still use my kindle paper white occasionally. Aside from physical books, I believe kindle paper white is the easiest on the eyes.
My answer depends upon how you access books… do you primarily buy them? Do you get your books from the library? If you buy them, do you like to buy them from Amazon or another big box store? Or from an independent book seller?
If you like the library, I would consider some sort of small tablet like an iPad Mini or an Android equivalent. Libraries tend to use a variety of apps and they usually all work on tablets.
If you like to buy from Amazon, a Paperwhite or Voyage.
If you like to buy from an Independent bookseller, look at Kobo devices.
For bet reading experience, I would get an eReader and not a tablet, but I enjoy the flexibility that my iPad mini allows, so I overlook the glare on my iPad mini.
I have a kindle voyage and I’ve been able to download library books on it. Additionally, a lot of independent booksellers do sell kindle format ebooks – not all of course – it takes a little finding ?
@James Yes, Overdrive does provide Kindle formats, but it’s the only one. I work for a public library and many libraries in our area are no longer working with Overdrive and now their patrons don’t have access to eBooks that will work on their devices.
@Divya Yes, Overdrive does provide Kindle formats, but it’s the only one. I work for a public library and many libraries in our area are no longer working with Overdrive and now their patrons don’t have access to eBooks that will work on their devices.
I didn’t realize independent booksellers were able to sell Kindle format. Do you know how we can find those? I would love to support more independent booksellers.
@Becky what? Oh no! Why is this happening? Are they just steering away from e-content? I just read an article Re how real books are being used more BUT regardless the libraries are increasing the move to e-content anyway.
@James In my experience there is demand for both print and eBooks. Like many things it’s personal preference. Many of the popular books have long wait lists on the eBooks just like the print books and they usually always buy far fewer of the eBooks because the pricing model from many publishers makes them a lot more expensive.
Overdrive is expensive, so libraries have chose alternative eBook venders like Cloud Library and Hoopla. They are still providing eBooks, but they won’t work on a Kindle eReader. At this time, the only vender for library eBooks that I’m aware of that works with Kindle formatted books is Overdrive.
Paperwhite! I have a Kindle fire but gave it to my daughter for a tablet. I’ve had just about every generation Kindle, and two Paperwhites (I hand them down to my husband, re-sell them, etc). I love the Paperwhite. I can adjust font if my eyes are tired. I can read in a pitch black room or bright sunlight with no glare. I can borrow books from the library on it. Books with lots of pictures I get in real paper. Everything else, Kindle Paperwhite. I love being able to carry all my books in my purse, or shop even overseas.
If you are just using it for reading and not other apps I suggest investing in a paperwhite. You can get the kindle app on a phone or ipad but those screens are harder on the eyes for books than the paperwhite. I do use my phone sometimes too but love the size and battery life of the kindle. I also love that I can read while husband sleeps without a light or feeling like my eyes are strained from looking at electronics sometimes for hours if I get caught up in a good book.
Don’t bother with a tablet or phone if reading is your thing. The Kindle fire is a very average tablet with many restrictions and using a phone is just awful. Try it in bright sunlight and see how long the battery lasts. Tablets and phones are great for many things. Reading isn’t one of them. Kindle Paperwhite lasts for weeks on a single charge and is crystal clear in strong sunlight
Also, i swore i hated ereaders… i think the fire made me hate it. The Paperwhite i think i now prefer because i can read with the lights off and it is so light! (Where before i preferred hard back books, i always felt the font was bigger.
I don’t understand why the Paperwhite costs more than the Kindle which is a full tablet. I went with the Kindle. I do like the Paperwhite screen for reading better than the Kindle.
I’ve had 2 paperwhites. The first generation and the latest generation. I’ve loved them both. Nice to read in bed with the lights off and have that backlighting on my kindle.
i never had one, but it seems limited on where you can buy books? Just curious, i only know one person who has one. She does not use it from what i can tell.
@Tina it’s by Barnes and Nobles. You can only purchase from BN. But, I think that’s the same with Kindle and Amazon. However, the Nook is seriously limited. It’s also not as user friendly. Mine finally stopped connecting to buy books, so I bought a Kindle, and I love it.
Kindle Paperwhite… Much easier on the eyes than reading on an LCD screen, battery life measured in days, more compact, zero distractions, awesome backlight
The first question to ask yourself is whether or not you want a dedicated reader or if you want a tablet. My family were early adaptors of the kindle. We owned the first model which was simply a reader. We’ve gone through several versions since. I have a kindle fire now. I also have a kindle app on my phone, so mostly I don’t drag my kindle around. Kobo kicks a little back to independent bookstores. My Nook, which is a much older version is a little clunky to use, but I’m sure newer ones work better.
I have a kindle. I got the most basic one on sale and then also got kindle unlimited when it was prime day so it was 40%. Best thing for me. Now I never run out of books to read.
I use the Kindle app on my iPad. Have my local library connected on it so I can check out ebooks and read on the kindle app on the iPad ?. Also Bookbub, Amazon, etc.
I have your basic kindle ereader. It reads like a book. It was inexpensive thanks to the holidays. I have also used it primarily for library ebooks. This has also lit a fire under me to finish books in a timely manner. I enjoy the lightweightness of the kindle. I also enjoy still needing a light source to read. Makes it feel like a book.
I have the Nook app on a Samsung tab s 8″. The app is great & storage is expandable. I recently added the Kindle app to my tablet as well but I don’t like it as much and only use it if the book I want isn’t available on Nook.
Download an app on your phone. I have a Kindle, an iPad, and an iPhone and find that I either read a real book, or if I download a book, reading off my phone on the Kindle app is fine. I never use my Kindle anymore because my phone is always with me.
I did that for a long time, too, Julia, and I still have access to my books on my phone, but after having some episodes of insomnia, I purchased a Kindle Paperwhite. It’s great because it doesn’t have the pesky blue sleep-robbing light. It’s light, which is great when I’m reading in bed. There’s also the issue of radio waves, which can of course be mitigated by putting your phone in airplane mode, but still. One less thing to worry about! Plus, I love that the battery on my Paperwhite lasts more than a week!
The battery on the paper white is amazing! I read everyday and mine lasts for weeks to a month depending on if I read more at night or day cause of the light
Paperwhite all the way
I like my Kindle Fire.
Kindle Fire
Paperwhite.
I have a paper white got it as a gift in October and I LOVE it. Pages look like book pages can read in the dark or in sunlight no problems best gift I have ever got my boyfriend pays attention lol
Also my mom has a fire and is gonna purchase the paper white because she loved how much better the pages look and battery last on the paper white
Kindle Paperwhite for sooo many reasons. No glare is the big one. I like it so much better than the Kindle Fire
I like my Kindle fire because it doubles as a tablet, but it doesn’t have the battery life that one of the lower level Kindles do, like the Paperwhite.
I have a Samsung galaxy nook. I enjoy it. It even is synced up with my phone.
Paper white.

Love my Paperwhite.
I like both the paperwhite and the oasis
Love my oasis
Kindle Paperwhite
I love my Kindle Oasis.
Kindle Fire
I polled the Silent Book Club, and was persuaded to buy the Kindle Paperwhite. Great decision, I love it!
I like paper books better, but still use my kindle paper white occasionally.
Aside from physical books, I believe kindle paper white is the easiest on the eyes.
Love love love my paperwhite.
Paperwhite!

@Becky sorry! Turns out I was wrong – the deal is between independent bookstores and Kobo, not kindle ?
Kindle paperwhite ?
Like Kindle paperwhile.
Can forcus to read.
App often disturbs by noticing so got me curiosotu what is coming.
E-ink dont cause eyeatrain.

I use my IPhone.Works just as good as or better than a tablet.
I read on my I Pad

Kindle Paperwhite. No contest. ?

The glare and battery life on the fire STINKS! Also, takes soooo long to charge back up!
I like my Kobo Aura H2O. I use it for side-loaded books more than for buying directly on the device. Never used a Kindle.
Kindle paperwhite
Kindle paperwhite
Kindle
Kindle Fire because I use mine for other things in addition to reading.
I have a Kindle keyboard so I can play word games on it
I have a Paperwhite, but I bought an old Kindle Keyboard on EBay for trips and because of the games. It was just $20 and still works.
For reading, hands down the Paperwhite. I now just use my fire as a tablet. I bought the Paperwhite just last month, and wish i did years ago!
Kindle paperwhite, the best.
Also, i swore i hated ereaders… i think the fire made me hate it. The Paperwhite i think i now prefer because i can read with the lights off and it is so light! (Where before i preferred hard back books, i always felt the font was bigger.
I have both and the apps on my tablets. I prefer the nook. Now, the one I have they don’t make anymore. I even prefer the nook app.
When I buy another it will be the paperwhite
You wont regret it. Like i mentioned, i wish i did it years ago.
I don’t understand why the Paperwhite costs more than the Kindle which is a full tablet. I went with the Kindle. I do like the Paperwhite screen for reading better than the Kindle.
I used to read on a fire. The glare can be annoying and the apps distracted me. I want an eReader
@Sabrina i am not sure. Each time i bought there was a sale going on. Also, i always come in late on the newer generations.
Buy Kindle or a Kindle fire tablet if you’re feeling adventurous!
I just recently bought a Kindle paperwhite and love it!
I’ve had 2 paperwhites. The first generation and the latest generation. I’ve loved them both. Nice to read in bed with the lights off and have that backlighting on my kindle.
I have the kindle Oasis brilliant as the double battery lasts for ages and the back light makes reading in bed a joy
I have a kindle paper white. It’s not harming the eye much.
I use my iPad. I have a bunch of e-reader apps (Kindle, nook, iBooks, Kobo, and a couple of others).
Kindle
Kindle Paperwhite.
Whatever you decide on, don’t get the Nook.
i never had one, but it seems limited on where you can buy books? Just curious, i only know one person who has one. She does not use it from what i can tell.

I am not sure about Kindle. I have not tried to buy anything that was not on amazon. I am glad you are happy with your kindle!

I like to read on my iPad, on a kindle app.

I have a Kindle and love it! Never without a book. I also used Audible so I can listen to books while I knit.
First question is which vendor are you going to purchase most of your books.

Kindle paper white is great. Only thing I don’t like is you can’t get your library app on it.
I have a kindle white and a kindle fire. I love both of them
