It is sooo weak. Auschwitz actually released a statement saying how poor it is and it must be considered as a story with little basis in reality or historical fact.
Kate Vigurs a new book was released in July this year in Australia? ‘Time to speak’ something like that. The publisher’s assistant (something to that effect) in Australia came into my shop. Think Jewish Museum in Sydney will know. This lady was a Polish Jew, had never spoken about her ordeal. Her health is/was failing and decided ‘time to speak’. Hope that is of assistance to you.
The book about the two sisters was fantastic can’t remember name off by hear but one of the sisters was called Dana I read it years ago and just finished reading it again
Niamh Lynch sorry. Should have asked. Laurence Rees Auschwitz and Nazis a warning from history are a good place to start. Also my friend Iby Knill who is a camp survivor wrote a great book called The women without a number (given how this conversation started that is quietly ironic) The Krakow ghetto pharmacy is a fantastic account of just that too.
I disliked it for all the reasons highlighted by @Kate, couldn’t believe half of what had been written and apparently for good reason, I was really disappointed x
If you can find it, watch a film called Remember. Its about a man in an old people’s home who goes on a journey to find an SS guard who tortured him and his friends in a concentration camp. I won’t say any more but it’s a fantastic film!
It’s a very good book, I’m glad I read it. However, I thought it was a little rushed, especially the ending. Maybe (and I had this discussion with a colleague) it was because the book was written from snapshots of his life and the interviews were taken over a long period of time.
When you’ve been to Auschwitz you can really appreciate the book even more, it’s a harrowing place & listening to the guide, you can’t begin to imagine the horrors they all faced but glad I went & glad I read the book to get a survivors perspective.
Was ok. I read it as fiction and didn’t know it was based on a true story until I finished it. It didn’t ‘get me’ like some other historical fiction does. I wasn’t transported across time and place…
I got this book from the library and sad to say I found that I couldn’t get along with it. I have read Primo Levi’s books recently and I think my judgement was clouded by his excellent written word.
Just finished it. Sadly very inaccurate and feels rushed.
Yes it’s amazing
Amazing book! X
Didnt like it
Yes I loved it!
Reading it at the moment. It’s a strangely lovely read.
Just bought it today but got one to finish first before I start it ?
Hated it
Yeah…I was a bit disappointed in it to be honest! It could have been done better
It is sooo weak. Auschwitz actually released a statement saying how poor it is and it must be considered as a story with little basis in reality or historical fact.
I expected a heart wrenching story and it just wasn’t
It was irritating and made it sound like a holiday camp where bad things happened to other people.
Yeah one of the best books i have read it because of this book im readd again never use to enjoy reading
Loved it. Not particularly well written but still read it in 2 days
Loved it ?couldn’t put it down xx
I loved it. Apparently it’s true.
See above.
I’ll need to find that statement from Auschwitz, curious to learn more.
@Niamh I enjoyed the book.
@Kate do you have any recommendations for other books that may be more accurate?
Let me have a think.

Sorry should be clear. I can recommend loads of non fiction but don’t think that is what I was being asked?
@Kate I’d happily read non fiction too.
@Kate I would like some suggestions aswell please x

I’m reading it. It’s just ok ??♀️ can’t put my finger on what isn’t making me love it. The writing is quite weak in places.

I loved it!!!
I really loved it. Sad when I finished it.
I disliked it for all the reasons highlighted by @Kate, couldn’t believe half of what had been written and apparently for good reason, I was really disappointed x
Yes last month, have to admit it’s not the best book I have read on the Holocaust.

@Mellissa I felt the same but the epilogue saved it for me. The Storyteller is a better read I think.
@Mellissa completely agree, glad I read it though. I must look out for the Storyteller
@Mellissa I thought that too, a bit rushed at the end. Great book though and a must read for anyone x

Just finished it today!!! LOVED IT!!!
