Has anyone ever read Gone with the Wind. It’s a classic but is it worth the read, I’ve never seen the film x

It’s a wonderful book! So well written and a lot of interesting detail about the Civil War x
Yes, so much better than the film. One of my faves x
One of my favourite ever books. In fact, you’ve got me in the mood to read it again!
Was just thinking the same ?
One of my favourites too – it’s amazing.
I loved it.
Loved it, read it many years ago on a beach in Portugal and it has stayed with me
I loved it but watched the film first as found the book hard to get into. It was handy knowing a gist of the plot!
Yessssss do it
I read it several times when I was younger. I’d like to reread it with more of an insight into slavery and life in the southern states.
Yes, read it after the film-love both!
Yes!! Its one of my favourite films and the book is even better x
I read it in 8th grade and again as an adult. Loved it both times.
Definitely
Thanks everyone – it’s next on my list now ?
Fabulous book, one of my favourites, read it
I read it in 3rd grade- WTH was my mom thinking?!?! ?
Yes love the book
OMG I cannot think that not everybody has seen this film. You must watch it or you are missing out
@Sheila I’ll watch the film after the book. I like to read the books first if I can x
I loved the book read it many times over the years. It’s much better than the film
Brilliant book, and loved the film, one of my all time faves.?
I read it last year for the first time and I loved it!
Read the book at least 5 times. Film is good too but leaves out quite a bit and is still nearly 4 hours long ?x
It’s my favourite
I love the book and film! Xx
Long film!x
Yes definitely worth the read. I felt uncomfortable at some of the racist attitudes in the book though
It’s been on my TBR shelf for 17 years. Maybe I ought to think about reading it too!
I read this, never would have normally but did and loved it! Never seen the film
Definitely worth the read. It’s a difficult start but hang in there it’s a gem x
Read it decades ago.. Loved it x
Well worth reading. It is superb
I borrowed it from the library about six years ago as Jack was telling me what a complex character, it sat there for days and I thought I might as well try it ‘ God’s nightgown ‘ it was excellent
@Nina love the film but the book is just outstanding!
Brilliant book – loved it
Loved it ❤️
I read it in 1983 after I’d done my a levels and had a long summer ahead of me. Well worth it’s weight !
@Bronwen those were the days!! X
@Jennie they certainly were
Its a great read! Definitely read it!! And I’ve also tried the sequel (which is by another author)!
@Sivashna there is apparently also another sequel from Rhett’s point of view, by another author. Ive never read that one though!
That ones good as well, Rhett butlers people x
Are you thinking of ‘Scarlett’ by Alexandra Ripley? I have read and enjoyed that too ?
Erica Florence yeah, gave me the ending I needed ?
I think I’m going to have to read them all again now, that’ll be my nostalgic read for the popsugar challenge ?
@Vicky yes I’ve read this too! Can’t remember it as well as the other two but I read those multiple times – back in uni holidays when you had weeks and weeks off!
It’s my favourite! I read it when I was off school I’ll at about 13 in 3 days and have read it again a few times since!
I read my mother’s copy in the 60’s as a young teen and was hooked. I read it over and over, captivated by Rhett and Scarlet.
Then, as happens, I forgot about it.
I went back to it in my 50’s and found it indescribably sad and depressing. As an adult I ‘saw’ all the sad futility of war and the effect it has on people and their lives.
The Road To Tara by Anne Edwards is a biography of Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone With The Wind.
It is an extraordinary story and well worth a read!
All Edward’s biographies are excellent.
yes.. definitely worth reading it! I loved it ?
It’s amazing
I had a bit of an obsession with it for a while and read everything. Scarlett the sequel is slightly far fetched ? but still a good read.
Absolutely brilliant book!!! I will never tire of reading it ? ?
One tip though…if you are going to watch the film too, watch it BEFORE reading the book ? If you watch it after, you will realise just how much they had to leave out in order to make it a watchable length!!
I love the book and film, it’s a beautiful story x
One of my favourites. Its definitely worth reading.
I’ve got a 1941 copy which I love, with a lovely inscription “To William, love Lily” wish I knew who these people were though.
Fabulous book! I couldn’t stop crying for days afterwards. It’s one of those “ones” for me, if you know what I mean?
Favourite book ever! Read it soo many times x
I love it.
I did in the 80s Enjoyed it as much as the film
YesyesYES! I’ve only read it last year for the first time but I’ve should have read it way earlier. It’s amazing AND an easy read. Might be my fave book.
cracking book
Awesome book!
Wow I read this years ago probably about 40 years! I loved it. Never seen the film but the book stayed with me. Enjoy xx
I love it and hate it at the same time. It’s a brilliant epic read, and it’s also appallingly racist (Ashley is a Klansman). I’d say it’s worth reading though.
@Cassandra I know what you mean, as I said I loved it, but I think you have to read it as an historical novel, although the year it was published there were still lynchings going on ?
Read it as a teenager and really enjoyed it ?
Yes, well worth the read. A really absorbing book.
Yes, beautiful and very long book! Read it in my teens,. Many many many years ago! ?
Definitely! My favourite book. One to fall in love with…
I love it! It’s massive…but so good!
@Nicki oh is it?? I’ve got it on kindle so wasn’t sure how big it was lol
It is, but don’t let it put you off! It’s worth it ? sure the film is four and a half hours long! It’s worth it too ?
Has anyone read the follow on…Scarlett?
@Debbie years ago when I was a teenager – I loved it!
yes I enjoyed it too, pity Margaret Mitchell only ever wrote one book
@Debbie yes – also v good
Yes, loved it x
@Debbie yes it’s a good read.
It’s one of my all time favourite books. Yes, today both the book and the film, best film ever IMHO, are racist in our eyes and minds now, but Margaret Mitchell grew up, hearing about the glorious South, the cause, the war and the plantations worked by slaves and when she wrote it,and the film was made it wasn’t racist. So historical goggles on for both read and film. Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win an Oscar, best supporting actress. And also, the film leaves a lot out, but had it been made today we’d probably have it in at least 5 parts, being 15 hours long. They managed to make The Hobbit into 3 very long films after all, and that’s a much shorter book. So sorry for this very long rambling answer. ?
This book is in my all time top 10 books. Simply brilliant.
Yes I’ve read it and loved it ?
I remember my mum telling me how she and her friends went to see the film when it first came out. One cinema showed all 4 and half hours. They had a long interval in the middle and everyone took sandwiches. There was a big mass picnic in the interval!
Another cinema showed it in two halves -they had to come back the next week for the second half!
At least they only had to wait a week – with LOR we had to wait a year between parts!
Fantastic book and well worth a read. Scarlett O’Hara is a feminist icon!
It is definitely definitely worth the read.
I read it years ago and still remember how much I loved it
You must read it ,and the film a must
I used to love it but have become more and more unable to cope with ‘our heroes’ being in the Ku Klux Klan. I know it’s primarily a romance, but I find the racial content profoundly disturbing.
For a huge book it takes no time at all to read. So good!
I read it years ago on a holiday to Ibiza. I vividly remember lying on a sunlounger at a cafe bar looking out to sea and reading it, whilst all sorts of craziness was going on around me ?
