@Katie have you read The Song of Achilles by the same author? It was wonderful and I’m critical. Good place to start with Madeline Miller, in my opinion.
It wasn’t bad. The writing was beautiful and the story was a neat take on mythology, but it felt very slow and meandering for a lot of the book. I almost DNF’d fairly early on, but it did pick up around halfway through, and it was better near the end.
I just finished it. I LOVED it. I have always been really into Greek Mythology. It sort of had a Mists of Avalon feel in that it touched on so much of the mythology and was told from the perspective of a woman who historically was portrayed as an outsider to it all.
Edit: It felt like it started to drag a little bit about a third of the way through or so, but then I realized it was necessary world building in order to hit on more of the mythology, and I was here for it.
Yeah! So it is from the perspective of Circe who, much like Morgaine, struggles with being out of favor in her family system (but, do they deserve her?) The story starts when she is younger, and still making attempts to be seen in a favorable light by those around her (in Circe, it’s her father’s court of titans and demigods. In Mists, it’s the court of Gorlois, then Uther’s court, then the eyes of Lancelot). The book then matures along with the titular character, while she grapples with a power she doesn’t quite understand and is not sure she deserves. Both books have themes of grappling with humanity (both that of other’s and oneself), self perception, love (romantic, familial, friendship), motherhood, and “goodness” (for lack of a better term) that are infused with mythologies retold from the unlikely heroine’s perspective.
As I am typing this out, I feel like I want to read it again. Haha.
It is oh so good!! I am almost done with The Song of Achilles… I adore Greek mythology and I like her using the perspective of other “legends” to create a new story.
I LOVED it. Its not action packed or thrilling or anything, but its beautiful and flows really well. Bonus, happy ending. Her Song of Achilles is amaaaaazing but that one will ? but you will love it the whole way
It started a little slow for me but I ended up LOVING IT!! I switched between the audio book and physical book for it and although the audio book was the most convenient for me the physical book somehow made it better? I really hope you end up reading it and loving it too!
I just finished it yesterday. I found it interesting because I enjoy Greek Mythology. But I will admit that the only reason I finished it was because I listened to the audiobook! It’s a bit rambling and slow at bits but the author does do a good job building the setting so you really feel you are living with Circe.
I loved it so much that it took me a week to get over “book hangover” before starting anything else. I was so sad to be leaving her world. I was in love.
It was sooo good. Highly recommend
Im nervous to read this. Heard its good. But dont know if id like the story
