I was a fan of Elizabeth George’s books, until I read “With No One As Witness”. I did not like the choice George made regarding Helen’s character. I thought it was pointless and I have not any of her books since. As for the BBC adaptation, I watched the first installment and did not like the decision to exclude Debra and Simon St. James, two of my favorite characters.
Helen’s death was gut wrenching. I was forewarned and it took me a long time to have the courage to read that book. I did not like the book that had to deal with what led up to her death. I do like most of Elizabeth George’s books, especially those featuring Barbara Havers.
I think the focus on the books shifted to Barbara Havers, especially from the one where it involved her relationship with her neighbor and his little girl. Wish she could meet up with that Spanish detective again, I saw a chance of romance there.
@Lynn I loved that book featuring Barbara and her neighbors. Best one since Helen was bumped off. Still haven’t forgiven George for that. I know she justified killing Helen off, but I think she underestimated how angry and disappointed it would make her readers.
Yes, love ❤️ them so much and read all. However, I really wish Isabelle would disappear. I don’t like that character and find her more of a distraction than a good addition to the books. She diminishes the relationship between Lynley and Deborah. After The Punishment She Deserves, I think it’s going to happen. Just MHO! ?
I like all her books (except Careless in Red) and love the characters. Her earlier books are especially good. What Came Before He Shot Her, I thought, was an excellent study of the “throw away” kids problem in today’s sad world.
I’ve read many of her books, and enjoyed them all – until I got to Careless in Red. Boy, was that a disappointment. Somebody just decided to phone it in with that one.
Inspector Lindsley – read up to the one that changed everything (don’t want to give away the plot – so hope those that are in the know, are aware of which one I am talking about). How are the one’s that came after (does it start with “What Came Before He Shot Her”)?
I’ve made a good start on them. I have a shelf with all the ones I have not read, but it seems there are so many books on my TBR list that I don’t get to her books. They are great, but lengthy.
If you go to Barnes and noble, go to shop and search Elizabeth George. You don’t have to buy. It will say inspector Lynley series #1, etc. That’s how I did it. Then you can go to library, buy, or whatever.
There’s a website called Order of http://books.com/ Look up by authors name. Hundreds of authors on this site. I’ve found it helpful when starting a new series.
One of my all time favorite authors!
Oh yeah, on the short list of favorite mystery writers.
Inspector Lynley series author or the Anerican author?
Both, right? The Inspector Lynley series is written by an American author.
Read Most but not all of them. Was very disappointed when BBC stopped production of the series. Love Nathaniel Parker!
She is the author that inspired me to visit Egypt.
Read them all years ago. Loved them.
Then you’re behind! She hasn’t quit writing them! (I’m behind too; I’ve got them all, but they haven’t made it to the top of the pile yet.)

Agree. Loved them until that one. Helen’s death just did it in for me. The books became ponderous to me and too wordy.
I agree, the end of Helen was the end for me as well.

I love the ones with Havers too! Also feel the last few could have used better editing but I still read them all!
I agree…I loved, loved the series until Helen’s death. That was beyond awful and I haven’t loved the subsequent books near as much…
I think the focus on the books shifted to Barbara Havers, especially from the one where it involved her relationship with her neighbor and his little girl. Wish she could meet up with that Spanish detective again, I saw a chance of romance there.

I have read a few and enjoyed them.
Quite a few, love them
I have!!! I love them.
Have read some and do like them
I have been reading them from the beginning. Love them. Although I skipped “What came before he shot her.” Couldn’t read it.
Me too!
it was sad but it was super good. I found it harder to read careless in red with Lynley’s new life after she was shot
Yes, love them!
Love them but I like to read in order and I’ve gotten them mixed up and I can’t remember which ones I’ve read .
And reading your comments I see Helen was killed. Oh no ?♀️
One of my favorite authors!
Yes, really love the characters!
Haven’t read for a few yrs. Had kinda forgotten about her. Thanks for reminder.

They are delightful!
Always waiting for the next one.
Me too! Years between each, but, then, at the end of it, we have a great book ? to read. The glass is half full…
Working through them!! Always fun.
I’ve made a start but there are many I have yet to read.

Just found one of hers that I missed over the years. Love having a yummy fat book waiting for me!
Reading one right now.
Yes!
Yes!
Love them, but, they “must ” be read in order. Too many references to past stories.

Oh I so agree. Reading punishment right now. Was hoping to see the end of her in this one. I guess not. ?
@Jane, like minds! ?
A Favorite author!
I haven’t read them all yet but I love them.
All except the last one.
I’ve read several; maybe it’s time to start up again!
I have read them all but found the last 2-3 not as enjoyable as the earlier ones.
Yes! Love Lynsey and Barbara Havers and their relationship!
Me too!
yes i have but not most recent .started it but can get into it yet.
Which Elizabeth George? There’s more than one out there. Genre?
Mystery writer
@Gail , looking her up now! Thanks!
@Bridgette you’re welcome!
I like all her books (except Careless in Red) and love the characters. Her earlier books are especially good. What Came Before He Shot Her, I thought, was an excellent study of the “throw away” kids problem in today’s sad world.
That’s probably true, but I couldn’t read it at the time.
I’ve read many of her books, and enjoyed them all – until I got to Careless in Red. Boy, was that a disappointment. Somebody just decided to phone it in with that one.
Yes- and I love them for the most part. But the latest one “The Punishment She Deserves” was quite a slog to get through!
Inspector Lindsley – read up to the one that changed everything (don’t want to give away the plot – so hope those that are in the know, are aware of which one I am talking about). How are the one’s that came after (does it start with “What Came Before He Shot Her”)?
Read many of her books. Love long books. They give you time to get involved both with the characters and the story.
Me too. Have to start with the first one
what’s the first one?
Yes, but I think I might be done.
She’s one of my favorites- just finished her latest.
I love read them. Great books
Yes!
stil reading her latest…but yes
I’ve read some but not all – it’s on the to-do list though!
Yes! Love Barbara Havers?
I’ve made a good start on them. I have a shelf with all the ones I have not read, but it seems there are so many books on my TBR list that I don’t get to her books. They are great, but lengthy.
Agree. I said a couple of months ago she has become the “Stephen King in the ‘80’s” writer of mysteries. Editor, be damned!
I was always waiting for the next one to come out.
Yes, every one of them. Excellent!
I have read all of them and re-read several!
Yes!
I absolutely love them all! Check on Goodreads for the order, and definitely start with the first.
A Great Deliverance is #1
Yes!
I read them for Havers. She’s the best!
I’m working on it.
I have read them all!
I am reading my first by her. The Punishment She Deserves.
Most of them. One of my go to authors along with Louise Penny
I am a faithful reader, too.
Have been reading inspector Lynley series….Love them
Yes
Yes, i love them
Is there a chronological list?
If you go to Barnes and noble, go to shop and search Elizabeth George. You don’t have to buy. It will say inspector Lynley series #1, etc.
That’s how I did it. Then you can go to library, buy, or whatever.
Thanks so much
@Frances, the books aren’t shown in order, so you will have to look at them.

@Melanie, thanks. I wasn’t aware of this. Great to know.
Yes, ma’am! She is one of my favorites!
Thomas Lynley reminds me some of another old favorite, Adam Dalgliesh, in P.D. James’ novels.
I’ve never read any
I LOVE Lynley and Havers! Am waiting on hold for the new one.
Yes! I will say the last couple were hard to get through though
Yes. And I am looking forward to her next one.
Just given the first 3 as a gift.
Yes…just finished her latest. Love themall☺
I’ve read them!
Every one of them. My favorites!
