I will never see the show. Honestly, I didn’t think highly enough of the writing in the books. Occasionally I’ll go from show to book, but I NEVER go book to show/movie. I’m not saying you shouldn’t try the books… Enough other people like them… But you did ask, and I figure only fair you hear the negative feedback too 😉 (But I do realize I’m in the minority with this opinion)
The first book is pretty much the same as season one but as they go on into the later seasons they leave stuff out and change some things. They’re worth reading but the show is ahead of the books now cause GRRM is slloooooowww
There are some parts you are going to need a fairly strong stomach (I had to put one of the books down and walk away I was so grossed out), but they are a good read. Take your time though, Mr. Martin is NOT going to finish the series anytime soon. ?
If you haven’t read any of his books yet, I would recommend doing so before tackling the Song of Ice and Fire series. Try Fevre Dream, it gives you a good idea of his style, the amount of detail he goes into during gory and food scenes for example. Many people have an issue with his style, thinking it’s too descriptive and dry. But I enjoy that about him, because, much like Tolkien, his descriptions help you visualize it more. I find that very helpful in a world as big and complex as the ones Martin writes about. Also, much like Tolkien, he will take you along with a character for some chapters and it’ll take a while for you to get back to some others. It can be tedious if you’re not into that. The thing about this series is that you have to keep in mind the bigger picture. You’ll love the characters all the way to their gory end, but the story you’re being told is not about the individuals in it, but more about the story as a whole, the country and its people and the wave of change that catapults them into the madness they find themselves into. It can also get a little political, which many people find boring. I suggest reading it slow and taking notes along the way of who is who and keeping an eye on the map to know where you are at the moment. It can get a little confusing. If you have watched the tv-show, it’ll be a lot easier to follow along, but remember that they did change a lot from the books the further along you go. Which is cool, because even as a tv-show fan, you’ll get surprises. Some changes they made for the telly, made a lot more sense to me than the stuff Martin wrote. The Sansa story line comes to mind. But I don’t want to spoil it for you. If you like epic fantasy worlds with a rich historical and political backdrop, this should be right up your ally.
I’ve read the entire series and I really love it! If you watch the show and like it, you’ll definitely like the books. I think that the books are better than the show, and I say that as a huge fan of the show, because there’s a lot more detail and the character development is better and more detailed.
the books are great, but so is the show. And at this point, will he finish them? who knows, but the shows finishing them, so it’s not that bad. Worth reading though. pretty good.
He takes forever but I’m sure the books r hard to write. It is worth reading for sure. Love the show but haven’t read the books yet. Just checkout the first book today…
Loved the show but not the books. Think i lost interest when he made me read 27 pages discribing the food at the feast… And then the food had nothing to do with the actual bit of plot i was reading about at that moment. He just pointlessly goes on and on and on and on…. Nah, not a fan.
I loved them
Great
Amazing!!!
I liked the first book
I have no respect for george martin as a writer. game of thrones is why.
U r missing out. The show is awesome

So you don’t like the way he writes, or you don’t like his writings because of the tv-show? Ö_ö
I’ve never seen the show
I will never see the show. I didn’t think highly enough of the writing… …
Ok, your original statement was confusing. Thanks for clearing it up.
I have never read the books but seen the show. I’m currently watching season 5.
I’m been obsessed
The first book is pretty much the same as season one but as they go on into the later seasons they leave stuff out and change some things. They’re worth reading but the show is ahead of the books now cause GRRM is slloooooowww
@Brittany yes he is
Love the books and the show !
Me too. Now I’m obsessed with
Getting the books
People say my Boyfriend looks like Ramsey?
@Bethany just as long as he doesn’t act like him lol
@Andrea no Mam definitely not
@Bethany lol my friends boyfriend does also ?
The books are far superior to the show.
It’s an epic story, but not for everyone. (See Cindy’s comment above)
Personally, I absolutely love the books
I’ll forgive you for liking martin… We both know Pern is the superior works anyway 😛
I love the shows
Never read any of the books now I want to read them now
@Bethany you should definitely give them a go
@Gordon for sure
Im on book 3
Great!

They’re awesome! They take a while to read but are completely worth reading!
I wish Martin would release the books already :”’3
Its a great, complex series, but the amount of time he’s taking to finish it is beyond ridiculous.
The books are fantastic but @Deb is right: probably not a good idea to read them while you’re eating …
Read first four two years ago, all satisfying, but I skipped the chapters on Bran, as I can’t deal with that type of fantasy. :):):)
Great books. Hope you enjoy them like I did
Loved it-Amber
Read it! Love it, but for the love of your literary heart, do not form attachments to the characters…
Unfinished. I’m still hovering on the edge of madness waiting for George R.R. Martin to finish…
Long and bloody
Such a good read!! You wont be sorry you read it. Its long though
Very detailed you understand the show better if you read them
It is great! Read all the books.
I loved it, just ticked off the author hasn’t finished the series yet he ain’t getting any younger.
Marvellous, just great books x
I’m reading it now. I’m enjoying it so far… and I have not seen the show.

Yes, enjoyed x
Yes, I’m currently at the fourth in the series.. and I really like it.
I started it, but not my kind of drama. I might give it another shot one of these days, but maybe not.
I love the stories and characters!
Brilliant books. Took me a while to read them but highly recommend them
Nearly finished the first book and am loving it, the TV series is very true to the book so far so if you liked that you will like the book

I almost posted this same question, yesterday.
It’s great but at this point you’re better off just watching the show. He’s such a slow author that I doubt the book series will ever be finished.
Books were good, the audiobooks were painful
Very good, loved it, wished he would write the last book! Just don’t start it before you go to bed.
He said there should be 3 more books but the last one was published 7 years ago!
@Brendan George RR Martin sure does take Forever but i know they are hard to write
the books are great, but so is the show. And at this point, will he finish them? who knows, but the shows finishing them, so it’s not that bad. Worth reading though. pretty good.

Love the show too. Never read the books but I check out the first one today
I read all of them but do not like the movies. I am disappointed with the author because he decided not to finish the series.
There are no movies and he never said he wasn’t finishing it.
I meant hbo, the series. He said he wasnt planning on finishing them anytime soon. He is doing other stuff.
Awesome!!
I found the series on TV more visually stimulating than the word descriptions in the book.
Do not start reading! The fifth book will never be finished and your life will hang in limbo until George R.R. Martin gets off his butt to finish it.
It’s a cruel trap…do not fall for it!
