My favorite novels aren’t on the list and I sent a message when the list came out: An American Tragedy (Theodore Dreiser) & A Widow for One Year (John Irving). Loved them both.
Same here can’t wait for the GreatRead?❤️?… then both NCIS’s but instead of the game watching taped Madam Secretary from Sunday ?❤️and an old Graham Norton ???❤️
Excellent show- wish they made it longer… but alas I agree with sooooo many and now I’ve a lot of homework to read those I’ve not yet read and reread those I’ve forgotten about.
I expected it to be between To Kill A Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice. Would have liked Tolkien to have gotten #1. Was glad to see HP at 3. I still haven’t read Outlander. I may read a bit of it at the bookstore to see….
Haven’t read or expressed much interest in Outlander, I’ll have to explore the series I love that this experience exposed me and so many others to books I haven’t thought about or new about or just passed up before and renewed interest in old favorites
I wasn’t sure about it when I first started. But once I did, I was totally lost in this historical, fantasy, passionate well developed story. I could t put it down. The love story between Claire and Jamie is wonderful, steamy and a romance you wish had.
I was surprised to see it was in the top 10. Figured it would be 8th or 9th. I was shocked when they said it was in the top 5 tonight. I can’t believe it ended up #2. How it beat Harry Potter, I’ll never understand.
@Kelley, I had three cats named Boo & Scout (littermates who lived to be 19 & 18.5 yrs respectively) and Atticus (who lived 15 yrs). Miss them SO much. 🙂
@Donna great minds think alike! Presently have litter mates Harry, Albus and Dobby! Wanted to name another cat Charlette for Charlettes Web but my husband kept calling her Scarlet so we stuck with that for Scarlet O’Hara! LOL
Judging by the number of post saying their going to try reading The Outlander (including me) I’m beginning to suspect the whole thing was a setup by Galbadon’s publicist ?
Like Diana Gabaldon said herself, pick up the book, read any three pages, and if you can put it down she’ll give you a dollar…nearly 30 years of fans voted, not her PR team.
@Karen Outlander thingy…LOL. Exactly the type of technical term that I use too. I hope you enjoy the book (or series if you get hooked) as much as I do. Funny to think that this was a book that she just wrote for practice. Her writing style is interesting too in that she writes in nuggets and ties them together vs to most authors who use outlines and all that.
Did you know it started out to read like a bunch of short stories? Her editor was very instrumental in fine tuning it to make it what it is! Brilliant book!
I was hoping and praying the American women authors would win the #1 and #2 spots–and they did!!! Am also in love with Pride and Prejudice and all things Tolkien from way way back. Colin Firth is my not so secret crush ever since the wet shirt scenes in the 1995 BBC version of P + P.
Congrats to the winner, but I have a special place in my heart for Harry Potter. I am also an Outlander fan, so…I think we should respect all readers’ tastes.
There were so many great books. I loved that we all went back and read books that we may have read yeas ago or had never read. I loved hearing everyone’s comments about the books they were reading. Thank you everyone.
❤❤
Me too!!
What do you think it will be?
@Angie I have no idea, as even I voted for multiple books ???
My favorite novels aren’t on the list and I sent a message when the list came out: An American Tragedy (Theodore Dreiser) & A Widow for One Year (John Irving). Loved them both.
Yes!
Where can I find the list of the top final books?
@Sharon https://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/blogs/inside-look/top-10-books-leading-the-pack/
@Angie thank you!!
Thank you.
not Narnia, and not Rings please!
A couple days ago, Narnia was in top 10 (so far).
Order of TV for tonight: Great American Read, NCIS, then Red Sox game!! Mama’s night for the remote!!
Same here can’t wait for the GreatRead?❤️?… then both NCIS’s but instead of the game watching taped Madam Secretary from Sunday ?❤️and an old Graham Norton ???❤️
To kill a Mockingbird
To kill a mockingbird
Outlander!!!
I think you’re in good company!
Not me. I couldn’t care less what someone else thinks is the best book.
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harry Potter, or Charlotte’s Web – those are my guesses
Can’t wait!!!!
I am interested to see what those that voted think is the top book.
Me too!!
I was at the Taping on Sunday!!! ?????
OMGawsh! Hint hint!
I opted to give up my tickets, the anticipation is killing me. LOL
My guess…To Kill A Mockjng Bird
Me, too!
I hope it’s one of my favorites!
When do we find out
Tonight at 8:00
Eastern time?
I sure hope they do this again next year in some form. Bring America together with books.
I am currently without out access to broadcast TV, can I view tonight’s episode online?
@Cathy , thank you!
Cathy, thank you again. I wasn’t home and your help allowed me to listen to the entire broadcast thru my bluetooth.
Me too♥️
Not gonna lie, if it’s To Kill A Mockingbird, I’m gonna get all teary & such!
What would Mrs. Dubose say about such behavior? 🙂
I’m certain she would disapprove of me in every way.
@Ivan, ❤
Me too!
To Kill A Mockingbird is my pick
Mine too!
Me too
Me too!
So excited! ?
Charlotte’s Web!! I can’t wait! Whatever book it is, its gonna be great, well and #1. Ha.
I bet To Kill a Mockingbird wins!
Moby Dick wasn’t high enough
They’re all winners!
@Kay so true!!
I am loving this! Are we all a bunch of nerds? ?❤️?????
Yes, and proud of it! 🙂
“Nerds today; bosses tomorrow.” #RetiredNerdTeacher 🙂
I am sure it is Harry Potter….. counting down the minutes!
I’m so excited! I will enjoy re-watching the episodes leading up to this.
I get so emotional watching it!
@Laura me too! I’m tearing up!
Handmaid’s Tale at 34? I would have thought it would be higher.
Don’t spoil it as some folks are on the West Coast and it hasn’t aired yet
@Jolie oh shoot, sorry!!
No worries. I went to the finale so I already know but a bunch of folks don’t. ?
It was just over in Phoenix, AZ
I think I’m the only person that never had to read Catcher in the Rye in school
@Charlene I never did either !
@Charlene ,it was banned when I was in high school. 30 years later, it was required reading for seniors. Such irony.
@Charlene I didnt either
Me neither
Noo!! Charlotte’s Web did not make top 5….
What!!!!
@Carrie I know!!!
GWTW not in top 5!
I know – I can’t believe it!!
@Maggie made it to #6!
@Diane , #6 !
My vote was #1 – yay!!!!
I think it will be “Mocking Bird ” or HP
HP, there are bazillions of fans.
George Lopez was a delight to watch on this series. The emotion he displayed was the true face of a person who was profoundly changed by reading. ?
Yes, made me proud to be a teacher who read to her students.
The biggest surprise by far. Great guy!
This is about the best thing I’ve ever seen!
@Jenni right!!!!
@Jenni I am loving this
I bought 2 tickets for the lottery. (Yes, I know, big spender) But I’m more excited about this. We are ALL winners in this!
Im getting weepy! All of my favs are at the top!
Wow.
HP at #3! Surprised!
Thank God outlander didn’t win. That would have been impossible to explain.
@Kathleen not to us fans!! A wonderful read!! As is Mockingbird
I did not see To Kill a Mockingbird making #1
@Charlene Me either! I mean it’s very good, but…
U all guessed it!!! To Kill a Mockimg Bird
I knew it!
To kill a mockingbird is my fav! Im crying… im such a nerd!
@Kelley I’m crying for too!!!
I am crying real tears too !!!!
Me too!!
Gosh. Everyone! West coast still hasn’t seen it
The perfect American book won!
Im so sorry for spoiling!
People shouldn’t be reading this if they don’t want to know outcome. You have nothing to apologize for.
I’m so happy!!!!! Such a good book, what a great show. I love Outlander too. Excellent show.
I have a bunch of books to reads too. Happy for that as well.
This was a GREAT series and experience!
Excellent choice America.
My poor family is wondering what the heck is going on. I’m screaming and applauding like I’m watching a football game, ( or Jeopardy)
My husband is furious because he wanted Moby Dick ?
@Karen this is great! So good
@Laura my husband wanted The Hunt for Red October, but he was willing to concede to To Kill a Mockingbird. ?
HRO was a great book and another fav of my husbands. He also liked Lonesome Dove. I am thinking not so many men voted
@Laura you’re probably right. My husband has never heard of The Outlander. But HRO and Lonesome Dove are now on my TBR list.
@Karen I do want to read LD. I am reading Rebecca for Halloween time sake.
Hooray! Wonderful to see the best candidate win! (In any election)
Great show tonight!
I wore my “Hey, Boo” shirt for good luck!
So good!! I’m so emotional right now!!
Awesome show! Not unhappy about the choice at all!
I agree I was emotional also which surprised me.
I was ready to cry as soon as it started, and I have no idea why!
Crying real tears!!!
❤️❤️
To kill a mockingbird
Perfect selection!
Excellent show- wish they made it longer… but alas I agree with sooooo many and now I’ve a lot of homework to read those I’ve not yet read and reread those I’ve forgotten about.
Thank goodness I’m home alone as I was cheering and clapping as if I was watching the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup finals. Great choices!
@Beth yes, my son kept asking what’s going on as I was responding out loud to the results!
Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one. ?
Btw – Go Caps!
What else can bring more than 52,000 people together in a book club? Nothing!
My sister just pointed out to me that three of the books are by women and three are by British authors.
I expected it to be between To Kill A Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice. Would have liked Tolkien to have gotten #1. Was glad to see HP at 3. I still haven’t read Outlander. I may read a bit of it at the bookstore to see….
@Mary it was the only one of the top 5 I hadn’t read. I guess I’ll have to give it a try.
@Karen Outlander or TKAM?
@Mary Outlander
@Karen That’s what I thought. It’s just never jumped out at me… and 50 Shades definitely never will appeal to me.
@Mary I am willing to experiment with Outlander but 50 Shades is a no go.
It was the only one I hadn’t read too. Just got it on audible last week.
Haven’t read or expressed much interest in Outlander, I’ll have to explore the series
I love that this experience exposed me and so many others to books I haven’t thought about or new about or just passed up before and renewed interest in old favorites
I wasn’t sure about it when I first started. But once I did, I was totally lost in this historical, fantasy, passionate well developed story. I could t put it down. The love story between Claire and Jamie is wonderful, steamy and a romance you wish had.
Have you read The House on the Strand?
@Laura no but thanks for the tip! I’m always looking for a good book to get lost in.
Outlander reminded me of it.
@Laura Yes in high school ; mind blown! I can’t believe my ultra -conservative high school library had it. Some savvy librarian must’ve snuck it in.
I felt like “Outlander” came out of nowhere.
– just not my type of book
“To Kill a Mockingbird” thankfully won. But I was nervous til the end.
I was surprised to see it was in the top 10. Figured it would be 8th or 9th. I was shocked when they said it was in the top 5 tonight. I can’t believe it ended up #2. How it beat Harry Potter, I’ll never understand.
Stood up and cheered for the winner- dogs thought I was crazy – winner is my favorite
My cats came running, to include “Monroe”, from Monroeville, Alabama. 🙂
So did I!!!! Scared the pups! The cat just walked away lol
I had a dog named Atticus, one car named Scout and another Boo!
LOL
@Kelley, I currently have “Monroe” who came from Monroeville, AL (I live not far), and we ALL know who was raised there. 😀 XO
@Kelley I had a cat named “Boo Radley” and always loved saying, “hey, Boo” to him.
@Carol, or “‘Boo’, Boo” at Halloween time. 😀
@Donna and he was solid black.
@Carol, ?
@Deanne I am not going to lie, I shed happy tears!!
I was cheering like at a sporting event!
YES! 😀
and STANDING, too!! 😀
@Donna I think my husband thought I was watching the World Series. ⚾️
@Kimberly right?! I so loved this & will miss it.
Judging by the number of post saying their going to try reading The Outlander (including me) I’m beginning to suspect the whole thing was a setup by Galbadon’s publicist ?
@Karen ?
Well you can join the fans who’ve been reading Diana Gabaldon’s books since Outlander was first published back in 1991. ?♀️?
@Karen I guess they have to pick an author who is still alive!!
@Karen I’m not buying it. Going to read a bit of it at the bookstore.
@Mary , smart move
Like Diana Gabaldon said herself, pick up the book, read any three pages, and if you can put it down she’ll give you a dollar…nearly 30 years of fans voted, not her PR team.
@Kimberly I’m sure the PR thing was just daud in jest?
@Diane I meant said!
@Diane you are correct ma’am!
(But seriously, I am heading to the library this week to get a copy of that Outlander thingy)
@Karen planning on visiting the bookstore tomorrow as I have to return some items to a store near it and check it out! Thanks!
@Diane hope so!
Watching
I was thrilled
Good show. Loved the #1 book!!! So many great books.
really? is this true?
Did you know it started out to read like a bunch of short stories? Her editor was very instrumental in fine tuning it to make it what it is! Brilliant book!
Yes, Amber
Thrilled about Mockingbird AND the entire top ten!!! Plus, I now have a few additions to my reading list,
I was hoping and praying the American women authors would win the #1 and #2 spots–and they did!!!
Very well said!
There were so many great books. I loved that we all went back and read books that we may have read yeas ago or had never read. I loved hearing everyone’s comments about the books they were reading. Thank you everyone.
But need a new challeng. Happy about last night’s program, but we are now GAR orphans.
@Judy so true. Where do we go from here??!?
@Kelly that’s my question too, Kelly. I’m going to find out for sure. Thanks. Glad you feel as I do.
I’ll be fine; have lots of things competing for my attention! Like reading all the books I have.
