Everything by Armine von Tempski. All her books were autobiographical. Born and bred on Maui at the end of the 19th century into the early 20th century. “Born in Paradise” and “Aloha.” Her father was the manager of the Haleakala Ranch. Might be available at the library but you will have better luck on Amazon. Also, “Shark Dialogues” by Kiana Davenport. She wrote another book, afterward, but I didn’t care for it. “Hawaii’s Story” by Hawaii’s Queen, Liliuokalani. “Stories of Hawaii” by Jack London. “Hawaii” James Michener. I was very lucky to live on Maui for a short period of time 20 yrs ago, and have lost track of how many times I’ve visited…happy reading!!
Shoal of Time by Gavan Daws (history); Holy Man: Father Damien of Molokai by Gavan Daws (bio); The Red Wind by Ian McMillan (fiction); Shark Dialogues by Kiana Davenport (fiction)
“Land and Power Hawaii” by George Cooper & Gavan Daws. A scathing view of just what the title says. A part of Hawaiian history that few know about. Ok. I think I’m done now…?
I started reading Michener’s Hawaii, thanks to this post. I’m heading to Hawaii in three weeks for the first time, and this read is getting me so amped! Thanks for the suggestion to all those that suggested it!! I just wanted to come back and let people know their suggestions are useful! ??
