By definition it’s not reading. It’s listening. I support people who enjoy audio books 100% but it’s not reading. Reading a book is an active skill. Listening to a book is a passive skill.
@Brendan, I think I see where you’re coming from, though I would like to point out that active listening can also be a skill. A person can still imagine the scenes and characters playing out in their heads while listening. Of course, this is only my opinion and I appreciate you explaining yours to me, thank you!
I support any format people enjoy. Listening can be active but I feel like most people have it on in the background while they do something else entirely. Someone in this thread said they listen to audiobooks while they sleep!
@Brendan This is true, I hadn’t considered them being used as background noise. I may listen to them before going to sleep, but I always make point of stopping the audiobook before actually going to sleep so I don’t miss anything.
@Brendan yes I listen when I go to bed. Mostly to drown out my snoring husband and also it helps me from thinking too much of what i need to do the next day or the week. And when I listen to it again, I start it from where I fell asleep from. So I do actually listen to the whole book. I’m not just leaving it on and falling asleep and saying that I listen to it and put it down as if I have read the book. I do read a book in bed before I go to sleep. And then I put my earphones on when I go to sleep. And I don’t think it’s bad to listen to an audio book when I’m going to bed.
@Kate I start the audiobook from where I left off when I fall asleep. I start it and try to find the last part where I remember it and start it from there the next night. And have a timer for one hour or half hour. I usually don’t listen to it when I’m cleaning the house or doing yard work or house chores bcz I can’t really pay attention to the story.
@Sihl, I understand, they do help with having something else to on which focus instead of overthinking about everything you have to do tomorrow, etc gives you a chance to relax and wind down so you can sleep.
And blind people do not have the choice of reading a normal print book but may still want to be able to participate in this sort of thing. So yes. It counts for everyone.
Yup!

I would if I used them. It’s just a different way to ‘read’ a book.
Oh yes!

Hell yes. It’s still a book.

Yes. You are still having a very personal experience. My husband and I listened to a book together and got totally different things out of it.
Audiobooks are listed on Goodreads so I’m assuming Goodreads is counting them so why shouldn’t we??
Yep
