The first few books aren’t that different from the show but when you reach the 5th book the story gets diverted a lot and a whole lot of new characters will be there. For me it took a lot of time to read all 5 and I found it really interesting most of the time. If you’re into reading all of it I think it’s a good time to do so. It was said that the 6th and possibly a 7th will be launched in 2019.
Will the final book be ever completed I wonder? He seems to be doing anything but getting on with it. I love the TV series too, and he seemed more involved with that for a long time, and now there is talk about a prequel Game Of Thrones series. And he has also just completed a new unrelated TV series.
I think not. He’s always been a slow writer but I feel like the show may have hindered his natural inspiration and motivation for continuing to write them, especially now that the show has surpassed the books.
@Vonetta I personally don’t think it’s that. I’ve see interviews with him where he mentioned that the biggest problem for him with getting books done in a timely manner is that he’s very motivated initially to get the story down on paper but once he gets the basic outline for the story down that motivation goes away and the part of doing all the writing “In between” the main events to make it a book is very boring. I feel like since the show writers have a basic idea of where the story is going and how it should resolve (obviously they change alot and put their own spin on it) as he sees it play out through the series he feels less motivation to make it play out on paper.
That’s kind of what I meant. With the television series so popular, and he’s probably being paid very handsomely for the rights. If he finds writing the in between story of the book boring , and he’s found another avenue to tell the story, what’s to motivate him to finish writing? He’s still getting paid. I hope this is not true as this is all speculation on my part. ?
@Rachel yes I agree. He says he likes to create the story as he is writing it, and as you say, loses interest in it if he has an outline and knows the ending. It’s a shame, but the series became so big. It just took over. On another note, thank goodness he was involved in the series though. It could have been a total flop had he not been there and been able to drive it…. a bit like AK Rowlings and Harry Potter and how she drove the whole thing.
I don’t think the Game of Thrones saga is masterpiece, but it’s very good fantasy. It’s nicely written. Maybe the best thing of all are the characters. Every character has a good and evil side, quite an elaborated backstory, and the world in itself is huge and variegated!
I read the first book…seemed to take forever. When there are so many characters to remember I personally find it hard to keep track. After watching the show, it would be easier I know, so I may read it over again. After I finish all the other books in my to read stack.
Every movie drifts from the authors books. That is a given. Although I understand why, I still find it disturbing sometimes. I wonder how Discovery of Witches will turn out? Can’t wait to see the visuals on her house.
Yes! But ur local library may have them ?

You will know ending by TV show lol to be honest I don’t like either
But the show will end differently from the books. Like Stannis hasn’t died.

Yesss!
If you buy the books, buy a map of “The Known World” also! I’m on book 5 and just got the maps, wish I would have ordered them on book 1!
Yes, but be aware that the story at a certain point differs from the TV show (not just less characters, but the TV show chose a whole different path)
