I love short stories! I think it takes more talent to write something short than a long book, you have to make an impact with fewer words. In my view, short stories are a glimpse into a life or a situation, not a novel with a beginning, middle and end. You have to release your expectation of a plot, and just go with the story. Jhumpa Lahiri’s short stories are some of my favorites.

Some of my favorite short stories were written by O. Henry and Saki. They’re very old, but so well written. For new stories, I like the yearly anthologies for travel, nature, mystery, etc.
I love short stories. Writing a great short story requires vision and artistic discipline in order to capture something profoundly impactful in a tiny package. Some are straightforward and easy to appreciate. But others seem to pinball around in us, demanding more attention over time. I first fell in love with stories by Edgar Allen Poe and Mark Twain, and then Guy de Maupassant, and the Russians Gogol, Pushkin and Turgenev. Contemporary favorites are Lorrie Moore and Jhumpa Lahiri.
I love short stories! And yes, some of them are confusing. I have to read them a couple times to better understand them.
