Anyone know if theres something similar to libby/overdrive for us in the UK? Would really save my bank balance
Anyone know if theres something similar to libby/overdrive for us in the UK? Would really save my bank balance ?
Also, i’ll be visiting Berlin soon and I have a huge love for history, any recommendations on books during WW2? Would prefer non-fiction to get a real insight into it but ill take fiction recommendations too!
some libraries use Borrowbox!
@Charley ooh ok ill look into it, thanks ?
I know my library (Essex) uses borrowbox
@Leanne ill have to go in and ask mine, thank you ?
@Kimberley you may be able to have a look online. I know in the Essex library website, when searching for ebooks, it takes you to a page for borrowbox ☺️
@Leanne my library doesnt have an online page, but ill be joining a new library so maybe they will!
My library uses overdrive. Glasgow and Renfrewshire.
@Jennifer theres only 2 Manchester libraries on overdrive but theyre high school libraries ?
That’s sh*te. Have you asked your local library if they lend out è books and who they use? X
@Jennifer i havent as theyre only open like once a week, but ill be joining a new one soon so ill see what they use x
The library I work for offers the BorrowBox app for our customer x
@Ssteph ill have an ask in mine, but its a tiny library that operates like 1 day a week so not sure how itll go ? x
@Kimberley oh dear! That’s such a shame. Maybe it’s best to join another library for this sole purpose. Our customers don’t have to be from our local district, so log as we have valid proof of their current address. You maybe be able to join another district library, one that is run by a Trust and not a Council x
@Ssteph theres a library at my gym but its not staffed after 1pm and i cant get there before then so i cant sign up ? ill have to try one day. All my local ones are council run, we dont have any trust ones as far as im aware x
@Kimberley aw man! Maybe try their website, people can apply for a card on ours x
@Ssteph mm i just googled it and theres no option, but apparently its staffed till 5 on a Monday so ill try and go tomorrow to sign up!x
In the Garden of the Beast by Erik Larsen. Non-fiction that reads like fiction!
@Madison oooh this sounds quite interesting! Thank you ?
Non fiction options:
Night by Elie Wiesel
In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson
Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany by Norman Ohler
Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields by Wendy Lower
If you can handle the heavy content, I’d recommend reading Death Dealer: The Memoirs of the SS Kommandant at Auschwitz. It is written by Rudolf Höss and he did them while awaiting execution after the war. They are the only detailed accounts written by an SS Officer about the camps.
Every Man Dies Alone by Hans Fallada
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan.
Both of these are fictional books but are based on true stories of real people during the war.
A few of my faves that are entirely fictional:
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
The Street Sweeper by Eliot Perlman
Jackdaws by Ken Follett
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
@Allison thank you so much for all these suggestions! They all sound so interesting ill definitly be getting a few ?
off topic (slightly) but i’m from berlin, in case you need bookstore recs!! x
@Meike ill only have hand luggage so ill probably try and stay away from the bookstores haha but if i change my mind ill let you know!x
