No, I love them! They make me think of reading library books when I was little and feeling the plastic-y clear dust jackets they put over the hardcover dust jackets haha. Now a lot of the library books I tend to get are soft cover but still love finding those few with the dust jackets
Yep, I take them off, put them aside. Never to use again. Seriously I feel guilty throwing them away cause you know, it’s part of the book…? but I eventually do.
My son does. I find them all over the house and set them aside to put back on when it gets shelved lol. He has weird texture issues. We’ve had to put packing tape over a few paperbacks because the covers felt funny and skeeved him out. He isn’t autistic or anything…. just can’t stand weird textures.
I remove them when reading, and if they’re particularly unattractive I usually keep them off. I actually have a basket on one of my bookshelves that is dedicated to (and quite full of) dust jackets.
I remove when reading and put it where the book was on the shelf to hold it’s place. If the book was used and the dust cover is messed up I will toss. It really just depends
No. I take them off while reading because they’re so annoying.. or sometimes I tape them down so they don’t move while I’m reading. But I tend to buy all paperbacks bc of this same reason..
*Disclaimer: No judgement just an opinion* I work in a local bookstore and last week I found a cover in the garbage behind the register. I couldn’t BELIEVE anyone would throw away a cover so I pulled it out and left a note asking if it was intended. Turns out a customer bought the book and didn’t want the cover. Personally I can’t fathom that….it was painful seeing this poor cover in the trash ?. But I know not everyone is the same.
i know some dont collect for value of the books and most books arent worth much (except for the story inside) but a missing dust jacket takes about 80% of the value away from a book.
I am not a fan of hard back either! But it was one of those order online, get the one they give you. I just cant stand them lol. My mom is staying with me right now, she cleaned house and I see she set the cover on the counter. I threw it out lol
Nope l love hardbacks but l do take them off when l read. If its possible l get the books that still are hardback ( last longer) that have the cover printed directly on the book itself.
I love hardbacks and covers. Theres a book on amazon called The Illustrated Dust Jacket by Martin Salisbury. Its really interesting!! Compares the art from the 20s thru 1970.
I take them off while I’m reading the book because they drive me insane.. I try to remember to put them back on but most of the time I forget about them and they get ruined. ?
It’s a horrendous “filing” system. ” yes, I do indeed have that receipt/document/bubble gum wrapper, it’s right HERE (grunting as I lift a stack of random papers)”. Then I have to go through it all. I DO, however, occasionally go through it and toss stuff. It’s not like a ” hoarders” worthy collection of stacks. Just one.
Hell no Lol I love them. Sometimes I’ll take them off while I’m reading it if it keeps sliding off. But with that said, there’s no shame in it. It’s your money and your property. I hate when people shame others based on what they do with their own property. It’s not like you’re throwing away someone else’s or a library’s ?
@Desiree l hate paperbacks because l keep my books forever or a long time and take them everywhere. Paperbacks are more acceptable to rips and tears in the covers where a hardback stays nice
Why would you throw away the dust cover from your hard cover book. The key word is DUST, to keep it off your book! I take them off while reading then put them back on. Plus if you trade or sell the, the gist of the story is on the cover. I hate it when they don’t put the gist of the story on a book! In fact sometimes I don’t buy a book just for that reason! I want to know what the book is about before I buy it.
@Sarah I usually throw away the damaged ones like the books I got at Dollar tree s while back had cut into the front of the dust jacket and into the cover of the book slightly so o ended up throwing them out because they were all cut up anyway another few I bought at a chairty thrift store for under 50c. Each had ripped and wrinkled jackets and one had a suspicious stain so they were tossed as well.
I have a real bad habit of losing jacket covers….I take them off so I don’t rip them while I’m reading but then I don’t always get them back on the book when I’m finished 🙁
Absolutely! and sometimes they’re pretty! I would never throw them away! They protect the book too! I just got a somewhat new hb, ‘Harbor’, the cover is gorgeous!!
No, I take them off when I’m reading but I save them for putting them onto the bookcase. They are dust covers, after all!
I take them off when reading and put them back on when finished.
@Lucy me too!
No, I love them! They make me think of reading library books when I was little and feeling the plastic-y clear dust jackets they put over the hardcover dust jackets haha. Now a lot of the library books I tend to get are soft cover but still love finding those few with the dust jackets
Oh no….I love them.
I want to keep anything connected to the book, including receipts
No way, then you are just left with a plain ugly old hardback lol.
I take them off and place them somewhere when I read.
No
my hard covers are all naked ?
Yes, especially if I get them from the thrift store or Dollar tree the dust jacket is usually messed up anyway
Yep, I take them off, put them aside. Never to use again. Seriously I feel guilty throwing them away cause you know, it’s part of the book…? but I eventually do.

I love them

I don’t throw them away, but I take them off while I’m reading the book.
Yes. I hate them
I remove when reading and put it where the book was on the shelf to hold it’s place. If the book was used and the dust cover is messed up I will toss. It really just depends
I remove them while I am reading, then put it back on when i am done
I do the same thing. The cover is just extra protection for books when not being read! ?
@Dawn agreed
Nope/ Never!!! But I Do Scape Like “ Crazy” Any Sticker On My Book!!!
Yes, but only temporarily.
I’ll admit, if I’m thrift shopping, unless it’s an amazing deal (like ten cents) I won’t buy a hardback that’s missing the dust jacket.
Yes! They are really annoying indeed!
I take them off while reading and put them back on when done.
I take them off when I’m currently reading the book. But when I’m done I put it back on. Helps protect the book.
No. I take them off while reading because they’re so annoying.. or sometimes I tape them down so they don’t move while I’m reading. But I tend to buy all paperbacks bc of this same reason..

This or
This
I take the first one
i prefer the second one, actually.
I tape mine to the book so it doesn’t move
I try to keep them, but after a while they end up wrinkled or torn. 🙁
I usually keep the cover on my bookshelf while I read the book. When I’m done, I’ll place the cover back over the book and onto the shelf.
This is what I do too.
i know some dont collect for value of the books and most books arent worth much (except for the story inside) but a missing dust jacket takes about 80% of the value away from a book.
I take them off while Im reading , then put if back on when I’m done.
I do the same
YES. And amen.
Guilty. Than i give them away. Not a fan of hardback lol.
??
Take off to read and replace. Would never throw one away.
I just threw out at least 7 dust jackets
Depends on the design of the cover and book
I think most books look better without it
But if the cover is nice enough I leave it on
I use them for journal making.
@Marna smart.
Especially in book journals?
All. The. Time. I absolutely despise them lol.
No.
Never.
No but I take them off while reading.
Yes
I take them off when reading the book but don’t throw them away.
I Never throw them away, I remove them and keep them as neat as possible until I’m finished with the book.
Nope, keep mine on at all times, even when reading
No, that’s my bookmarker
I used to just take them off while I was reading. They are called “dust jackets” for a reason. ?
I love hardbacks and covers. Theres a book on amazon called The Illustrated Dust Jacket by Martin Salisbury. Its really interesting!! Compares the art from the 20s thru 1970.
No, never. I do take them off sometimes while I read though.
I take them off while I’m reading the book because they drive me insane.. I try to remember to put them back on but most of the time I forget about them and they get ruined. ?
Or they end up in piles w all my other “important papers”.
@Nicholas yesss. Mine always get squished by piles of “important stuff” ?♀️
Just one.
Never. Ever.
I take it off only when I’m reading the book. Then I put it back on.
Never
Nope. I take them off so they don’t get ruined or torn whileI read and then replace them when I’ve finished the book.
Never ever. I take them off to read, and put the back on for display on bookshelf. They are pretty.
I used to when I was young. Now I wouldn’t dream of it
No, but I have taped them tighter to the book so it doesn’t flap around. That is annoying to me!
I take them off while reading but they go back on when I finish the book.
Why not get paperbacks then?
@Desiree l hate paperbacks because l keep my books forever or a long time and take them everywhere. Paperbacks are more acceptable to rips and tears in the covers where a hardback stays nice
I hate book jackets
Take them off while reading and then put back in once done.
I do this!
I take it off to read but replace it at the end.I couldn’t throw it away ??
Why would you throw away the dust cover from your hard cover book. The key word is DUST, to keep it off your book! I take them off while reading then put them back on. Sometimes due to marketing, the dust cover doesn’t match the plot at all. I set it aside if it’s a distraction.
I like the covers.
Oh no!! I could never throw them away! I also loved all the covers!
I’ve thought about it, but then I worry that I will be struck by lightning if I do. Lol
I have a real bad habit of losing jacket covers….I take them off so I don’t rip them while I’m reading but then I don’t always get them back on the book when I’m finished 🙁
My OCD won’t let me take it off. My family borrows my books sometimes and they get lost or messed up and I have to force the monster down!
Comes off to read, back on when done.
I do that to books that are used to to decorated my bookshelves
Never
They look better without the jacket and they are just annoying aha
@Ashleigh some books look better naked ?
No, I never take off the dust jacket, even when I’m reading. It ruins the look in my opinion. Plus the flaps make great bookmarks ??
Yeah I take mine off! They annoy me
sometimes if they get annoying. I’ll put it back on when i’m done.
Nope. I use the front flap as a book mark.
I love them. The inside flaps make great bookmarks.
right! i’ve done that too!
I also use the back flap to mark the halfway point in the book. Progress is cool. LOL.
Absolutely! and sometimes they’re pretty! I would never throw them away! They protect the book too! I just got a somewhat new hb, ‘Harbor’, the cover is gorgeous!!
Yes! I love cover art. Let’s see those pics.
ok hold on!
pm’d you!
I some times take them off while reading, then put them back on. They are annoying. Agreed.
…People DO this? But… They make good bookmarks because of the flaps…
@Damien This person does this lol
My wife did this because they looked “more decorative” on the bookshelf. I was not happy.
I hate the jackets. They always come off or I can’t tape it just right to stay. I usually throw them out or fold it & use as a bookmark
I take them off while I read the book and then put it back on to place it on the bookshelf.
NEVER!!!!
OMG I want the slipcovers and NO marking pages. 🙂
No way
I’ve always mixed feelings about keeping them or not… hahaha
Yep, every time
No! It keeps the book clean.
I take them off when reading and put them back on when I’ve finished the book ?
