Recently I’ve loved The Witch Finders Sister by Beth Underdown and The Suicide Club by Andrew Williams… The Matthew Shardlake Series by C J Sansom is excellent (Dissolution, Dark Fire, Sovereign, Revelation, Heartstone and Revelation) … The Thomas Chaloner Series by Susanna Gregory is also brilliant… Witch Light by Susan Fletcher… Ashes of London – I forget the author and there’s another one but I have completely forgotten what it’s called right now
Wow thanku
Girl at War by Sara Novic … Thank God for Goodreads zx
I’ve also got The Essex Serpent and Golden Hill to read myself I’ll let you know what they’re like ?
I really enjoyed The Witchfinders Sister also ?
Been on an Ellis Peters kick lately… Her Brother Cadfael series… Wouldn’t say you can’t put em down, but they’re short enough you don’t really have to, and long enough to be interesting 😉
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty and Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
Thanku
Following
Goodnight, Mr. Tom.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
Great book
I was going to suggest it!!! Amazing book. ?
Definitely this one!
Read it but thanku
Fortunes Rocks by Anita Shreve, and also Sea Glass by her.
Madame X and The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
I just finished Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave. Really good!
Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series
Read 3 times lol
My top pick for the best in historical fiction!!
The Alienist by Caleb Carr
bernard cornwell
I just gave my mum a book by Julian Fellows called Belgravia. It is meant to be really good and losely based around the TV show Downton Abbey
Museum of extraordinary things.
The Kingfountain Series by Jeff Wheeler is good! Loosely based on Richard 3rd era!
The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck. It’s set post WWII.
The Alice Network
Anything and I do mean ANYTHING by Philippa Gregory (I’d start with the Tudor series or the Cousins’ War series but her stand alone books are great as well)
Yes! ?
Harry Turtledove wrote dozens of alternate history novels, and there is a whole lot of real history in them. And he’s a very good writer, too.
The Outlander series
Outlander. Hands down.
There are touches of science fiction / fantasy, but it’s easily ignorable if you’re not into anything like that.
I’m obsessed with Scottish and Early American history, so it’s the perfect fit for me!
This is why you are book wife number two
Read it 3 times over but thanku xxc
“Feast of All Saints” – @Anne.
Outlander
Nightingale
Before we were yours
The book thief
The storyteller
All of those I could not put down
Is the Nightingale good?
Omg yes. So good
This was a great read
I think you’ll like this book! The Pillars of the Earth https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5043?source=ebfg_sms
The next book in the series has just been released too – the sequel is ‘world without end’ and the new one is ‘a column of fire’.
Will have to look out for the third. csnt really remember reading the second the first was def a difficult to put down book. ?
This is an excellent series!!
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
He just came out with a new book that sounds just as fabulous.
@Jayne, thanks, I’ll look for it. 🙂
Highlander series by Karen Marie Moning ?
From what I can remember there’s a bit of magic, but I read it quite a while ago…
From Sand and Ash or the Book thief.
The Bronze Horseman series ❤️
Patricia Cornwell’s book on Jack the Ripper. A true basis with her research giving her an idea to propose what happened. Chilling.
There’s The Duchess and The Kings Daughter. Both are set in England. The Duchess is more of a look at 17th century politics and social norms, following the life of a woman who happens to be a duchess who gets involved in such politics. The other is about the short reign of Henry VIII daughter queen Mary, when England pretty much went to hell and back. They’re great reads! So if you like books about English royalty/nearly royalty those are the historical books I’d pick
Pillars of the earth is definitely a good read
Wilbur Smith.
The Courtney novels, or the Egyptian novels.
Both great series
Life of a Geisha
Anne Perry writes about Victorian England and the social problems, Cynthia Herrod-
Anne Perry’s Thomas and Charolette Pitt series is excellent! The books can be read out of order but reading them in order gives you the historical aspects in society, England, and Europe as they occurred.
My computer quit working mid-post. I think Cynthia Herrod-Eagles Moreland Dynasty series is very good. I learned a lot of English history from 1400 to about 1920. I have read the Pitt series out of order, but have enjoyed it. as well as the ones about William and Hester Monk by Perry.
This was also a really good book. Love this author she is really good with her research.
Year of Wonders https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4965?source=ebfg_sms
Excellent read. All of her books are very good.
EXCELLENT book — Also Love in the Time of Cholera
We also read that after this one. Struggled a little with that one though.
Just reading Calebs Crossing now ???
The Chronicles of Francis Crawford of Lymond by Dorothy Dunnett. Warning: she is a VERY dense writer—there are layers upon layers, with subtle meanings, but her story telling is marvelous and Francis is a fascinating protagonist. The setting is the childhood and youth of Mary Queen of Scots, but Francis has adventures all over the place, including Russia. You cannot really say Francis is the hero. He is one of those people who is way too smart for his own good, which gets him in trouble a LOT. And there are times you just want to smack him upside the head to knock some sense into him! The books take a while to get into, but are worth your patience. These are the books in the series:
The Game of Kings (1961)
Queens’ Play (1964)
The Disorderly Knights (1966)
Pawn in Frankincense (1969)
The Ringed Castle (1971)
Checkmate (1975)
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer
Half of a yellow sun
Anything by Paul or PC Doherty is a good read.
IDK if this is a historical fiction, but “The Perks of Being A Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky is nice
The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd… I have just started it a couple of days ago but. It’s amazing. Especially since it’s inspired by the life of a woman I had no idea existed.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.
QB VII by Leon Uris.
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier.
The Darwin Conspiracy by John Darnton.
A most definite vote for Remarkable creatures here?♀️
The House I Loved by Tatiana de Rosnay.
Tell Me Who I Am by Julia Navarro.
Night by Elie Wiesel.
The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton.
Ken Follett’s Century trilogy, Edward Rutherford’s London, Paris and New York.
11/22/63 by Stephen King
The Book Thief and All the Light We Cannot See.
Tracy Chevalier; Geraldine Brooks; Philippa Gregory
I’m currently reading Circle Of Time by Debra Shiveley Welsch. Its good! Set in Tudor England
I’m currently reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah and it’s an amazing book.
A friend also suggested the Egyptian series by Wilbur Smith.
Currently reading “Moloka’i” and it is wonderful
“The Address” by Fiona Davis..a blend of then and now
I like Phillipa Gregory for fiction. Non fiction I suggest Elie Wiesel and Eve Kor Moses(forgive me if last name spelled wrong.) Lucy Worsley
I forgot Phillipa Gregory!!! Yes!!! (Now I have to go find one of hers to read… she’s great!)
I got save some money too get her final Tudor court book “The Last Tudor” about Lady Jane Gray
Robert McCammon’s series set in Colonial America is wonderful. That’s not really my historical period, but he really brings it to life. Matthew Corbett is his hero.
Historical fiction might just be my smallest ‘Read’ genre.
Cleopatra VII: Daughter of the Nile – 57 B.C. (The Royal Diaries)
by Kristiana Gregory
For a younger audience, but VERY good!
Loved The Red Tent and Orphan Train.
Anything Phillipa Gregory!
Outlander- Diana Gabaldon
I think it was reading The Red Tent wasn’t got me excited about historical fiction.
Sheriff and priest by nicky moxey
Wars, Spies and Bobby Sox by Libby Fischer Hellermann
I just remembered… if you’re in a mood for stories that take place in the Ancient times, specifically Ancient Egypt Michelle Moran wrote quite a few interesting novels on the matter
I just bought this on Saturday. Haven’t started reading it but it sounds very intriguing and interesting. I’m posting the synopsis as a reply to this comment.
This was an excellent book, I really enjoyed reading it. Thanks for reminding me about this.
Glad to hear it’s good. I’m excited and can’t wait to start reading it!
