@Katharine my last book I was able to recommend to my mom. She finished it the morning of the day she passed on and we discussed it laughing our faces off at “the pie” scene. She loved to read and I’m so happy we shared that
You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me. A memoir that shows the native American experience as the author explores his difficult relationship with his mom. It’s mostly prose but with some beautiful poetry. Someone I know recommended it to me, knowing how much I love reading. It was so beautiful.
My Antonia by Willa Cather. I’ve read it once a year for almost 20 years now as a result of that recommendation. And another great recommendation was Flannery O’Connor
@Jilliebelle my friends do not read. I once borrowed 1 my James Patterson’s novel called Suzanne’s Diary For Nicholas. That was probably in 2011. It’s still not returned. ?
I normally do not enjoy any book someone recommends but I loved, loved, loved The 5 Love Languages. Not “only because” it was recommended. I loved it because it’s great, period!
Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything. A friend sent it to me and I thought it was brilliant. Science made VERY interesting. Highly recommend it. Even better on CD for long car trips.
Call Me By Your Name and The Name of the Rose both recommended by my hubby (actually he technically recommended the movie of CMBYN first and then I read the book…otherwise I wouldn’t have known about it!) Also Cold Comfort Farm recommended by a friend.
Once read a series by Josie Litton (Dream of Me, Believe in Me, Come Back to Me). While I was waiting for my physical therapy appointment to begin, I met an older lady who had just finished the book. When I told her I was working on my own novels, she smiled, and wished me luck. When I went back to do my session and finished, the receptionist says: “Are you Adam?” I told her yes. The lady had left me the book Come Back to Me, to read. I had to get the double novel of the first two before I could read it. Fantastic historical fiction.
Other Mentions:
Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weis The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie The Bronze Knight Trilogy by John Marco Baumgartner’s Bombay by Anita Desai
There are more, but those were the first ones I thought of.
Dragonlance 🙂 Wow, I read those when they were FIRST being released! Took me back to my teens for a minute. Raistlin got a bum rap. He was a dick, yes, but so was his brother LOL. Rushdie is worth reading. That one specifically, but I’ve read several of his others & they were well, WEIRD….
Normally I’m not a YA fan, but, the Miss Peregrine series was recommended to me by a friend who knew I’d get a kick out of the old photos if nothing else, & the Catacombs series, for the same reasons.
