I so enjoyed shopping for christmas, thinking about how happy everyone would be when they opened them. I had that warm feeling in my heart thinking back about their smiles and laughter until………the bills came.
By the time their adult children had finally found the Christmas decorations in the farthest reaches of the attic, all the gifts had already been opened and their children were getting ready to load all of the grandkids into their cars and head back to their homes. “I think we need to switch all those boxes around better for next year–that was to close for comfort,” Grandma whispered to Grandpa as everyone drove away.
The girl wondered through the snowy neighboorhood looking at all of the beautiful lights to take her mind off her heartbreak. Her boyfriend of five years died in an accident yesterday, and she felt like porcelain, like she’s going to break any second.
She went home to discover that the front door was wide open-the red suit lying on the floor as well as the white gloves and black boots. Santa Claus was well and truly home for the rest of the Christmas holidays.
It was really cold, and the outdoor cat came with the house as we moved in last Christmas. This Christmas, Fluffy came in for the first time and slept on the bed all night . . . Perfect!
I was sitting on my couch happily texting Christmas messages to my friends before church on Christmas Eve as it was too late to prepare and send Christmas cards (which unfortunately has become an annual tradition). Hearing an unusual noise, I looked up to watch the beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the corner slowly and majestically lean over until it resided horizontally on the living room floor. (True story)
Twas the night before Christmas, and I just had to stay home from Mass. Not a creature was stirring, not even my heartbeat.
The tree was all decorated and the Christmas Supper laid out. I sat at the table with no one to share it with.
Thus christmas day came, I sat by the fire with a glass of whiskey in my hand.
The gifts were given. The debt was paid.
So much excited anticipation led up to this day. Now it is just a memory
A drone was sighted at the North Pole. Santa never made it that night.
Got up and looked under the tree. Nothin there.
For a moment paper knew flight and glided downwards to speckle the floor. Then suddenly it was snatched up and forced into a plastic darkness.
As I walked to my front door, I noticed the Christmas tree in my living room window. One problem – I hadn’t put up a tree this year.
Merry making were the memories made. Bittersweet as the memories fade.
Across the wind swept snow I could see a light shining out in the barren corn field. Who could be outside this late at night swinging a lantern?
