I loved his voice and ‘read’ by listening to the audio books in my car. There is one book that was read by another and I wasn’t happy. I realized that it was due to the specific theme of the character in that book. If you ever get to it, you’ll understand.
If I ever had a son, his name would have been Atticus! I mentioned this to my husband recently, and he said “Why didn’t you say so sooner?” Sadly, I think it’s too late (but he’s willing to give it the ole college try ?).
@Chris I read that it is going to be a limited edition series on HBO. with Mark Ruffalo cast as Dominick and Thomas. No info about when it is supposed to air.
Samwise Gamgee. Although Frodo gets so much attention, Sam is a true hero. He didn’t have to be there. He wasn’t the chosen. But he was, and where would Frodo have been without him?
Travis McGee! There’s a name from the past. John D. MacDonald is one of my favorites. I think I’ve got every single one of the TMG paperbacks stashed in a box somewhere. My mom back in the 70s got me started on those books. Thanks for the memory. Oh and you have a very pretty kitty ?
Me, too. Love Alex Cross and Woman’s Murder Club series. I go ahead and add them to my “wish list” on Amazon when they first announce they are coming out so I won’t miss them!
The narrator from Tim O’Brien’s Tomcat in Love. On the one hand, I was mad at him all the time, but he was extremely, extremely compelling. I felt tricked by that book! I’ve never read or experienced such a thing.
Augustus McCrea (Lonesome Dove), Michel Bloomquist (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Tyrion Lancaster (Game of Thrones), Sam Damon (Once an Eagle), Air Ben Canaan (Exodus), Newland Archer (The Age of Innocence) ….
Cotton Malone, Arthur Pepper, Pete Decker (Philip R Craig’s Martha’s Vineyard mysteries) William Tapply wrote a good series as well. Also The Harper of Pern.
I like the flawed, but striving to improve ones. The best example is Sipowicz of NYPD Blue, but there are many good ones in novels. J. P. Beaumont is the first one that comes to mind, but there are many more and some better.
Malamud is ….was a beast…Jewish identity jive ,,,, THE FIXER u have to read it and think of yourselves caught up in life as is ,The assistant is about accidents and history and continuity of one man joining a family a true continuity develops…mythology and Revelations my computer blink..MALAMUD<,,,

Jon Snow and Ned Stark (Game of Thrones), Konstantin Levin (Anna Karenina), Greg Mortenson (Three Cups of Tea), Joshua Slocum (Sailing Alone Around the World), Anatole Ngemba (Poisonwood Bible), Luka (Luka and tbe Fire of Life)
Macon Leary in THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST, Joe Harmon in A TOWN LIKE ALICE, Capt. Frederick Wentworth in PERSUASION. HALL OF FAMERS: Rhett Butler, Mr. Darcy, Harry Potter, and Atticus Finch.
Atticus Finch, Billy Coleman, from Where The Red Fern Grows, Nick Carraway from The Great Gatsby, Tom, from Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Like Jesus, he would rather die, then reveal the whereabouts of Cassy and Emmeline, to Simon Legree. And he forgives his killers, before he dies!!!!?
Well, of course, Rhett Butler! I love a suave, debonair manly man. The limp-wristed, pale-faced Ashley Wilkes, not so much! ?. ALSO, I adore Jim, in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for his humanity, honesty, vulnerability and strength of body, mind, and spirit. Jim was one of the first characters in American literature to be depicted in full, 3-dimensional flesh and blood! I credit Twain greatly for showing his readers that color is only skin deep. He held nothing back in depicting the stupidity of slavery. Many readers today fault Twain for using the N word 400 times, but he was telling a story of his time and that is the way that it was. We cannot sugarcoat the horror of that word—instead, we need to learn to view the story through the lens of historical context…and be open to dialogue about it. That is how our children develop the ability to think critically!

Harry Dresden, Inspector Gamache
Have you read all of the Dresden books? I just finished #4 and am just now starting to find him likable.
@Amanda, all but the most recent. I like him because he’s so flawed and I envision him as the actor who portrayed him in the short lived series.
@Leslie I’ve kept going mostly due to others’ like of him and my fondness for the actor who voices the audiobooks ?
I loved his voice and ‘read’ by listening to the audio books in my car. There is one book that was read by another and I wasn’t happy. I realized that it was due to the specific theme of the character in that book. If you ever get to it, you’ll understand.
