When you guys read a series, do you read them back to back, or take a break and read other books in between?

I don’t read back to back. You need something fresh in between. I recently read ACOTAR & then Red Queen & Forty Rules Of Love. Have not read the other books of the series but I’m looking forward to them.
That’s how I’m feeling. I’m in the middle of the Throne of Glass series, and am trying to decide if I should jump right into the next one or read a stand alone novel in between.
I take breaks.
They are 6 books so read 2 books back to back. I would have done the same if I had it.
Back to back.
I read back to back most of the time. I like to be completely immersed in a world when I’m reading a series and don’t want to forget tiny details that might come up in later books ?
Back to back
Depends on the series. I read twilight back to back but only because it was all available(right before the firsr movie came out). Still reading some series that have a book once a year, so of course I read other things in between.
Back to back
Depends. If I the entire book in the series or three of them, I would do back to back. But If I don’t, well, I read another books in between.
Back to back!!
Sometimes I get burned out reading 3 or more books with the same theme, so I will try to read a bunch of stand alone books before I start a new series. Then I will read the series back to back and take another break before starting a new series.
Back to back unless the rest of the books aren’t out yet
I tend to take a break, I find it hard to stay in one world for a long time and enjoy it.
Depends on the series. Some I’ve read one after the other. Others they get too repetitive and I have to take breaks.
Break.
Depends on a number of things like how many books are in the series, how invested I am into the story, if it gets dry or hard to read for a spell. For instance, The Saga of Seven Suns by Kevin J. Anderson I read back to back & it has 7 books in the core series, 2 prequels, & a sequel trilogy for a total of 12 books but the Wheel of Time series that has I think 14 I’ve had to take breaks every couple books.
Break if it’s slot of books in the series
I try to read them back to back but sometimes there are books that I have been wanting to read so I end up reading the books in between
depends on the series
Back to back.
Depends on the series. If I really like it, Ill read them back to back. If its a long one…more than 8 books, ill read 4 or 5 then something else and go back to the rest ( like Kim Harrison’s Hollows series or Chloe Neil’s Chicagoland Vampire series). The only one Ive read the whole thing without a break is Harry Potter.
I can’t read books back to back. If I’m reading an entire series, I’ll read 1 book every month.
I hate cliffhangers so I’m constantly looking for series already finished. I read them back to back and then inevitably suffer from book hangover. Of course, I read new series as well, but more often than not I get disappointed because of the months of build-up and anticipation.
I try and wait till the whole series is finished or I feel like I have to go back start from the beginning if it’s been to long lol
@Britni I enjoy rereading the books in a series before a new one comes out (since HP days). But I do it because I know I won’t be able to remember all the details if I just jump into the new book. My biggest disappointment in that department came from the Divergent series.
Yes I am actually doing that right now with the house of night series and do it all the time once a series has finished I’ll wait till I have them all and start over
It’s such a joy to reread the books of a series you love! It’s so peculiar to me how some people actually prefer stand alone books 🙂
@Sofija I do enjoy both. Sometimes after a long series I’ll read a stand alone just as a like pallet cleanser ha ha
I try and read them back to back because if I go to long inbetween with to many other books i forget what happens
I break
Back to back.
For me, it depends how long the series is. If it’s 3 or 4 books, I’ll try to read them all together. If the series has more than 5 books then I’ll definitely read a book or two in between to see how much of the series stays with me to see if the series of worth continuing or not.
I’m actually in the this process right now with a series I’ve recently discovered. The series is 7 books long so I’ve been reading small books in between each one to make sure I’m still interested in the series before I buy all the books at once.
Depends on availability and how much I enjoyed the book.
If I enjoyed the book, and the next ones are readily available, then I keep with the series. If I didn’t enjoy the first book, I don’t usually continue the series. If I enjoyed the book, but the next isn’t available, I go to a different book until I can get back to that series
i usually read them back to back but i am taking a break in the mortl insturments and the infernal devices series, i feel it was getting too repeative so i took a break and is now reading ACOTAR with my bestie
I used to just read a series back to back but since I started reading again last August-ish I’ve always taken a break sometimes a long one to make sure I don’t burn myself out on reading again. For instance I started the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs back in August and despite the fact that I’ve had the most recent book since Christmas I just read it last month.
Back to back so I don’t forget stuff and start mixing the books up ??
I take a break! Unless it’s a Trilogy. For some reason when it’s a Trilogy I like to read them all back to back. But if they’re longer than that I take breaks in between. ?
Break, it starts to get uninteresting if I don’t
Back to back mostly
Usually back to back, but not always.
It depends on how the last one ended
Depends on what comes up. I try to read the series without breaks but it usually doesn’t happen.
I was reading a book didn’t realise it was a series and left me at a cliff hanger I was so mad I have not read the second one yet but I have it
That happened to me recently with “Truly Devious”. Great book, but I didn’t realize until I was over 100 pages in that it was the start of a series.
Depends on good the book is and if the next book is out.
Most of the times back to back and sometimes I break. Depending on the series
Back to back. I have 4 books left in a 23 book series.
What series?
I tend to read other books between but then it can go soooo long before I pick up the series again, so I’m trying to read them back to back.
Take a break with 1 stand alone book between each
Usually back to back.. unless I make a lapse in judgement and only buy one book in the series and read it then I’m screwed and have to read another book until I can get my hands on the rest of the series… currently having this problem!! ?
If I can, I’ll read the whole series. When I was collecting a lot of sci fi & fantasy books, I’d wait until I got all of an older series and binge read the whole thing. Usually worked out fine, depending on the writer and the series.
Back to back unless I have to wait for a release. I read so much and fast that I forget details!
Others in between.
Others in between. If I read them back to back I sometimes get bored.
I typically can’t read them back to back because I get so irritated with the characters or author for repetitive phrases that I want to hurl the book into a deep, black abyss.
It really depends. If it’s amazing, and I need to know what happens next, I’ll go right into the next book. If it wasn’t great, but I want to finish the series, I’ll read others in between.
Depends on how into the series was and how I felt when it ended!
Depends. If I really enjoyed it, I usually can’t wait to read the next one, but normally take a break
Back to back always.
I tend to space them out but not too far, so I can retain details from each installment. With Tana Frenchs Dublin Murder Squad, I am drawn to reading the next installment as quickly as possible but not too quickly because they tend to be emotionally draining.
I read others inbetween otherwise I get bored and lose interest.
Both
For me, it depend on how into it I am. Sometimes I want a break from that particular world or characters but other times I can’t get enough! And then on some occasions I love a series so much I don’t want it to end so I spread it out on purpose ?
I use to read books back to back but within the last year I been taking a break in between books because I get bored really easy now. But I suggest reading back to back because if not then like me you might not finish the series. I started so many and have yet to finish one in like a years. It upsets me that I do that.
I frequently drop series after just one book, and sometimes even more. Perhaps they are just not grabbing you enough 🙂 I pretty sure you know that – just don’t be upset about it. I’m really trying to stop judging my own reading behaviors, so I’m being extra nosy and bossy telling others to stop judging themselves too 🙂
It’s not that they’re not grabbing my attention but that I get bored easily with the same world so fast. Like I need a break and then come back to it. Like with the Throne of Glass series I stopped in the middle of the third book but I really liked it I just wanted to experience a new world for a little bit. I think it’s because I want to read stand alone novels more recently but in fantasy genre but there aren’t many of them I haven’t seen.
@Tiffany It’s so interesting! I usually hunt for finished series.I love diving deep into the world and spending time with the same characters. When I read a book in 2-3 days I feel like I forget it too quickly and it doesn’t leave an impact on me. Then of course there are series that you just can’t and it feels a waste having waited for all of it to come out. Standalone fantasy books are quite rare and peculiar. I have enjoyed The Bird and The Sword. And I’m currently reading “The Book of M” which I randomly picked up. I’m still not sure how I feel about it though. There’s just not enough magic in it for me. For now, at least.
I love diving into a world and getting lost in it but recently I’ve been struggling to continue through a series. I hope it’s just a phase. Because I prefer series over stand alone but I think what started it all was how huge books in series are and it scares me. Ahaba.
@Tiffany I keep looking at the Wheel of Time series and dreading it a bit. I think I struggle when the books are written to fill a certain number of books rather than to tell the story in full. Can you share some of your favourites, maybe?
Some of my favorite book series? Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco, The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison, Harry Potter of course, I also liked A Land of Stories by Chris Colfer (though that’s a middle grade series). I recently enjoyed The Kiss of Deception by Mary E Pearson, and Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones.
But I’ve recently been reading poetry. Jennae Cecelia is been my favorite poetry author.
Oh dear me! Apart from the Harry Potter (of course) I don’t think I even heard of these books. Thank you! Poetry is something I want to read more of. Since I didn’t study in Englis (in school at least) I haven’t read any original English language poetry. (That sentence was so clumsy, I’m sorry). Apart from Byron. I read Byron for some reason. Anyway, English language poetry sounds kind of awkward to me. I can never find the rhythm. But in essence poetry is so beautiful and I want to read more of it.
Would you recommend any essence poetry?
I meant the essence of poetry, how it’s constructed is beautiful. Painting a big picture with just a few precise strokes. I’m sorry the wording got confusing 🙂
Oh no it’s okay. But what are some of your favorite books/book series? I wander if I heard any if them.
The most recent fantasy favourite is The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson. It’s adult fantasy and his most popular Mistborn series doesn’t even come close. I really enjoy books by Anne Bishop – The Others (series name) and The Black Jewel trilogy. The latter is dark but riveting and each book holds up on its own. The Queen’s Thief by Megan Welan Turner. From non-fiction, I absolutely loved The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris. It’s long and I can’t say I’m a fan of biographies, but it’s so worth reading. Some of my all time favourites are The Unbearable Lightness of Being by a Czech writer Milan Kundera and Silk by an Italian writer Alessandro Baricco (his other books too).
@Sofija yeah I’ve never heard any of these books either but I’m interested so I’ll definitely look into these. Thank you(:
I like to read back to back if I’m really enjoying a series. If its only okay, then I will usually take a break and read others in between. But then the question is – will I ever come back to it? ?
Depends. I just read nine books in a row of one series because I got thru three books in another series and needed a break. ??
