Well…..it all depends…when I was way behind in my goodreads challenge I looked for short books!!!! But usually I’m going in to pick up ALL the books I’ve put on hold that seem to arrive at the same time!!! Does that happen to anyone else?????
Haha! I’m not one of those though. 🙂 I know what I can read in the 3 weeks I get (3 books max), and I can easily hand-carry those. No sense in hoarding books (keeping them from others who might want to read them before I can get to them).
I ‘browse’ online first, and I usually have a title in mind already. But, while I wait for my turn in line to retrieve the book I requested, I’ll browse in-library.
Mostly browse. I also pay attention to authors. However, since joining this group, I have been interested to see all the talk of genre. I am 66 & to me books have been generally fiction or nonfiction. For example, I read Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children before I ever saw it listed as YA. It seemed like an interesting story & I was totally intrigued by the photos. I look for something that captures my attention & propels me to read.
I almost always end up getting my books thru interlibrary loan, so I don’t browse that much at the library. When I do, I browse the new fiction, mystery section first, then the rest
I go with an open mind. My friends used to tease me for buying music or books I’d never heard of, but over the years they’ve come to trust that I have some sort of inner dowsing mechanism that rarely steers me wrong.
Depends whether I’m in browsing mode or looking for something specific. I browse the shelves by genre until I see something I like, then look for other books by the same author.
Both. I am more likely to avoid certain genre then go looking for certain genre. What I mean is that I don’t like reading horror, sci fi, or thrillers, but I am open to pretty much everything else, even the occasional junk. 🙂 I do have certain authors that I go looking for.
I run in the other direction. Libraries make me cringe… I haven’t been in a library in over a year because the moment I’m near the shelves, wonder about all the cold and flu germs all over the books. I know that sounds weird, but this is why I started my own home library.
I think it’s because when I was little I was always prone to colds and flus and so I started collecting books to read at home instead of borrowing them from the library… it’s a habit I have now so I don’t catch a cold from a book. And even when I buy a second-hand book, I get an anti-bacterial wipe and give it a good going-over before I add it to the collection.
Good to know I’m not the weird one… the amount of times I’ve dated a guy and he’s seen my collection (a big test to see what he thinks of me) and he’s leaned over to whisper: ‘You know we can whittle these to around 100 or so, okay?’ I look at him, ‘This library started at around a 100 or so and I built on it.’ then I smile as his face falters. 🙂
How true! Because then, what happens when he wants to read a book, but it’s raining and he doesn’t want to leave the house to go to the library? Go to our own home library – of course! Why don’t people think of this?
I can’t wait to move into a bigger place – as I live in a townhouse – where my tiny library of 2,000 books can expand into the 10,000 books I’ve always wanted it to be! 😀
My Dad has asked me why I’d want a bigger library… Mum and I just turned and stared at him as though he’d lost his marbles… I didn’t need to say anything.
I know! And yet Dad collects junk… you know like drills and bolts, screws and other crap we don’t need so many of… and expects us to keep it all when he falls off the perch. Um… nope, it’ll all go into a skip or will be sold at a garage sale.
I’m already organising for my book collection to be given to the right places – you know the first editions go to the State Library, music goes to the State Archives, LOtR’s book collection goes to the LOtR Society here in Brisbane… my brother and immediate family get top choice of what they want – anything else gets sold at an auction and monies goes to Epilepsy Queensland as a donation. It’ll all be in my Will. 🙂
I do my research online via Goodreads, etc. Then I put the books on hold (again online) at the library. I don’t spend much time wandering the aisles any longer, but I pop in a couple of times a week to pick up the latest treasures that have arrived for me.
I get so many ideas from this list, and also from reading various publications that review books, and I reserve online what I want and then go in to pick them up. So I seldom really browse in the library.
Usually genre, but sometimes author, it depends on what I’m in the mood to read

Me and I end up walking out with a very heavy book bag
Always!
All the time
Both…depends on whether I have a genre in mind or if I’m looking for a favorite author. Sometimes, they overlap.
browse!
I usually have a particular book in mind when I go.
Do you only get one book
Ha! Nope… I’ll browse too. But, when I do that, I’m not specific.
It is the specific book that gets me in the library in the first place, though.
That’s OK then you do know it’s a rule to co.e ho.e with a heavy library bag right haha
Come home
Haha! I’m not one of those though. 🙂 I know what I can read in the 3 weeks I get (3 books max), and I can easily hand-carry those. No sense in hoarding books (keeping them from others who might want to read them before I can get to them).
Both
Genre, then author.
Usually genre.
I usually pick up the books I’ve requested online to have on hold and then scan the new arrivals shelf for author, interesting title, or great cover.
Love this idea
I ‘browse’ online first, and I usually have a title in mind already. But, while I wait for my turn in line to retrieve the book I requested, I’ll browse in-library.
Genre, then browse unless I’m looking for something specific.
Genre…I head straight over to the sci fi fantasy section first.
Mostly browse. I also pay attention to authors. However, since joining this group, I have been interested to see all the talk of genre. I keep a TBR list on goodreads so I just look for them. Headed there today!!
That’s a great idea I usually get there and forget the names etc
Author.
me too
I almost always end up getting my books thru interlibrary loan, so I don’t browse that much at the library. When I do, I browse the new fiction, mystery section first, then the rest
Neither. I just browse until something catches my eye
Both!
I head straight for the cd section. Then by author or just browse. The librarians sit very close by so I often ask them for recommendations
I look for a book–a good book.
Both
I’m very random, so both, neither…….
I see if the title catches my eye, but I do look for authors that I know I enjoy as well.
I like to look for new books….I am a judge a book by its cover kind of girl….I shouldn’t but I do. If the cover catches me, I usually pick it up!
I go with an open mind. My friends used to tease me for buying music or books I’d never heard of, but over the years they’ve come to trust that I have some sort of inner dowsing mechanism that rarely steers me wrong.

Usually a title I’ve seen recommended on here ?
both
Genre, because I am sure to find my favorite author among them.
Usually specific book, then browse the area around it
Depends
Both
Genre
first I check out the ‘new releases’ shelves, not necessarily for anything in particular then I go for genre
First genre then author.
These days I usually have a specific title/author in mind and I request it online from the library website.
Depends. Upon what? Dunno. ?
Author
For genre and then author and then the color ?
I agree! Aquamarine/teal gets me everytime! ?
Titles attract me.
I always look at staff picks first- found lots of great books that way. Then I go through my TBR list.
That’s a good idea
I run in the other direction. Libraries make me cringe… I haven’t been in a library in over a year because the moment I’m near the shelves, wonder about all the cold and flu germs all over the books. I know that sounds weird, but this is why I started my own home library.

@Lynda In this day and age with all the super bugs, not such a crazy thing!!!!
@Lynda his loss!!!!
How true! Because then, what happens when he wants to read a book, but it’s raining and he doesn’t want to leave the house to go to the library? Go to our own home library – of course! Why don’t people think of this?
@Lynda many here do I think!!!!!

No judgment here!!! <3
My Dad has asked me why I’d want a bigger library… Mum and I just turned and stared at him as though he’d lost his marbles… I didn’t need to say anything.
Some people just DO NOT GET IT!
I know! And yet Dad collects junk… you know like drills and bolts, screws and other crap we don’t need so many of… and expects us to keep it all when he falls off the perch. Um… nope, it’ll all go into a skip or will be sold at a garage sale.
I never actually thought about it like that but in saying that same goes with a lot of things shopping trolleys money etc

I look for the new book displays.

I always hit up the new releases first. It’s like Christmas everytime! ?
I browse looking for what strikes my fancy, first it is the title and then I read the blurb to see if it interests me.
Author then a genre

@Author
Author or a specific book.
Authors or books on my list.
Yes.
Every once in awhile I just go down an isle and scan titles. I have read some really good books just because I found the titles interesting.
I always go with a list but if they aren’t available, I tend to browse the sci-fi section.
I get so many ideas from this list, and also from reading various publications that review books, and I reserve online what I want and then go in to pick them up. So I seldom really browse in the library.
Me too!
