I never had this experience. I have always liked the books i have read because I always make sure to do a lot of research on them before diving into them to make sure I’ll like them.
Twilight. My niece wanted me to read it and she is my sweet girl so I did. Written at a 3rd grade level, characters without any character, horrible, creepy stalker portrayed as “romantic,” just… awful all around. Unreadable.
Classic wise, I would have to say “Catcher in the Rye”. I just disliked it immensely. And as far as other more contemporary books “Wolf Hall”. I don’t persevere any more now with a book I’m not enjoying. Life’s too short and there are too many good books out there ?
The ashack …. I know everyone loves it but I couldn’t wait to finish it and b done with it …. Sonething I just did not enjoy about it …. The murder of the little girk and get father’s grief where too much for me at the time . I’ll see the movie soon .
In literature, has to be Tale of Two Cities by Dickens. He got paid per word and it shows. Popular fiction-wise, it’s a toss-up between Don Delillo’s White Noise and Gone Girl.
The Elegance of the Hedgehog By Muriel Barbery. The idea was good, a housekeeper lady who likes to read and knows a lot about everything meets a girl who wants to commit suicide because she can’t find a place in the world, but the writing is bad and the characters hideous, so you definitely hate them. There is a very unlikely love story. And the ending is just stupid. The only good thing about this book is the title.
The wizard of earth sea, it literally bored me to tears every time I tried to read it in English class and at home….my English teacher then told me that he was counting on me being the only one to actually read the book…..oops sorry not sorry
By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept, by Elizabeth Smart. It was just a pity party in writing! The author loved a bloke, but he was already spoken for, and so Smart wrote this moany little book about how unfair she thought it was, like she was an overgrown child! It might be a short book, but it wasn’t short enough!
There are books that I have enjoy much more than others, but I would not call any book ‘the worst book’ that I have read. I enjoyed the Twilight books – they would have appealed to me more if I had read them as a teenager. If I am really not enjoying a book I just leave it – half way or even a few pages in or in the case of what I could call the ‘worst book I never finished reading’ Fifty Shades of Grey which I gave up on after reading half of the first page.
For me from memory it has to be Jane Austen books which I tried to read, cant remember tbe title. Also a book by Alice Sebold think it was called lovely bonez or something like that x
The cheating just made me angry. I’ve been in situations like that and it didn’t appeal to me. Plus I never got the feeling that there was deep love between Sydney and Ridge. I don’t know just everything made me angry lol
That’s probably because they were originally magazine serials, which meant a certain amount had to be written every month. Being popular at the time, I suspect Wilkie Collins decided that they should simply be turned into books without further editing. A little judicious skipping might be in order, though I don’t recommend it lightly. 🙂
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. It was such a chore to get through. It’s the only book I’ve fallen asleep reading ? Also, Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. I have a Mexican background and was all set to enjoy this book, but the integration of Spanish within the book was just too cheesy for me to appreciate.
I don’t even remember the name, it was a school book. I find French Canadian literature from Quebec pretty dul n always talk about the same shit, at least the school books
Do you remember the other books you read in school? Kind of curious to see the difference between what the required reading is in Canada vs where I live
Mystic river. The way it was written was so jumbled that the plots transition was so confusing. I only read half of the page and stopped because it was so awful (no offense to the writer.)
I Loved the book, in fact after I read it I read every other thing he wrote which they all our great. Dennis LeHane is the author. I have to say I saw the movie before I read the book they followed the book exactly, the book was more In-depth which books are,the movie was great but the book was better to me.
A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas. I brought myself to read most of it, but put it down. Just not worth it to me to finish it when I literally almost fell asleep through most of it or hated it.
It was the goosebumps…”welcome to the camp nightmare”…i like other goosebumps books… But this one… After reading… I wanted to throw away and tear it apart… ?
“The Bridges of Madison County.” The author was so obviously describing himself when he described the protagonist and was clearly madly in love with his own creation!
I read it once, & found it far more accessible than ‘The Pearl’; but then I was older too. The trouble I find is that writers are considered ‘great’ by criteria I don’t necessarily agree with, or wouldn’t’ve done had I been consulted. I haven’t the objectivity, I’m afraid.
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I legit couldn’t stand the book. I finished it because it is a classic. Now I can’t even remember anything about it except the intro where they were talking about some whale genitalia or something and it scarred me for life. I love his book East of Eden though, so I’m not against all Steinbeck’s work.
Oh, can’t agree with you there. Richard Bach is an excellent writer. Try his collection ‘A Gift of Wings’. Only one article has anything to do with seagulls 🙂
Wake, Fade, and Gone. The series overall was pretty good, but the way it was written irritated me so much. In most of the paragraphs she would write a sentence describing something and then the next sentence would literally be the same thing, but worded differently.
Beautifully written but too wordy. I was loving it but got stuck around page 75. So I put it aside for a while and I’ve read three other books since then.
It was like an acid trip. Pointless events and things didn’t line up…by the end I literally had no idea what was going on or why. The death of the horse….if I remember correctly, did that have a point other than making me hate the story ever deeper into the depths of my soul? What was the point? Omg I hated it so much I don’t even know why a publisher ever thought it was good enough to print
It is a very disturbing book. And not in any type of good way. The author was clearly going for a purely shock and awe factor. I found the book complete disgusting and I can’t believe I even finished it.
The wizard of Oz. I just did not enjoy it, didn’t like the writing and the death scene was HORRIBLE! It was such a disappointment! For once, the movie was better then the book!
“The Book of Ruth” by Jane Hamilton. It’s about a dysfunctional mother/daughter relationship. I suspected there may have been a gender disconnect for me, but the emotions still should have generated a more universal appeal. The author has a fine style, but the story just dug a hole and stayed there.
The worst book I attempted to read was Feed by M.T. Anderson, it was a futuristic sci-fi novel, but it had horrible grammar and none of the future slang was explained. I couldn’t stand it, so it’s the only book that I flat out gave up on reading.
Two. Status 1SQ, a very poor school of Alistair McLean attempt, & As We Forgive Them, something about Bomber Command. I apologise for the lack of detail, but frankly I’m surprised I remember even the titles. There was some dreadful swords & sorcery thing too, but I gave up after chapter 2.
I agree, @Zoe, it’s exceedingly rare that I don’t finish a book; I think it’s happened about twice, & I felt guilty on each occasion. I suspect we’re subconsciously hoping it’ll improve right up to the end 🙂
The second book, waterfall, in the Tear Drop books by Lauren Kate. Absolutely horrible ending. Same goes with the last book of the Maximum Ride series.
I try to finish books. There are only a couple that I’ve given up on. It’s almost like a challenge to myself to finish a book even if I’m not that into it.
Gone Girl. Hated the book, hated the movie! Extremely poor writing, rambling, boring, and incredibly predictable ending. I thought for once the movie just had to be better than the book, but no; equally terrible.
War of the Worlds…. I was forced to read it for summer before 12th grade (we used to have choices on what to read but NOOOO my teacher was a witch with a B) So I read like half of it… and just could not finish it, so I watched the movie instead and got a 60 (F) on the test. I really could care a less because Lit was my best subject in school. I brought that grade up quick, fast and in a hurry and stayed at a 100 avg all year… and yes my teacher hated me. You’d think with grades like mine I’d be a teacher’s pet but she hated me because I would finish my work in 15 minutes and read quietly the rest of class… She hated me and the other students did too…. doesn’t make any kind of sense does it? LOL Thank God, that’s over with! 😛
Fifty Shades of Grey and not even because of the BDSM debate. It’s just a very unbelievable story to me. I’ve read a lot of things, I’ve seen a wide variety of couples. The story line just does not seem plausible to me in any way, and I read books with talking dragons.
I’m not trying to force my opinion on you but the relationship does get better in the other two books… But I do see your point of view too… its a f’d up relationship especially at the beginning (first book).
It’s fine. I have read the other two, and quite enjoyed Fifty Shades Freed. I just didn’t understand how most of Fifty Shades of Grey was passed by anybody.
Especially when she just about had no idea what sex even was. She had never even HEARD of Christian Grey until her friend made her go. And somehow of all the available, women in the city…..he chooses the kind of homely girl? That just didn’t seem right to me.
I found 1984 depressing and quit after 50 pages. I don’t think it’s the book or the author but the dystopian genre that doesn’t agree with me. I did enjoy Fahrenheit 451, though, which I believe is the same genre.
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. I had to read it for my honors English class and I could not for the life of me get into it. Ended up getting thoroughly frustrated a quarter of the way through and had to spark note the rest of it to pass the tests and assignments.
The reformed vampire support group. The main character was just so whiny. And there were at times, because of how many characters the author and presented, you couldn’t tell who was speaking. Also the plot was just a bit hard to follow
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. This is one time the movie is better than the book. The book went nowhere.I gave up when she said the killer’s mother left when he was a child. You murdered an innocent 14 year old girl & we’re supposed to feel sorry for you, I’m sorry I can’t.
The Scarpetta Factor. Just couldn’t get into it even although fans and critics said it is her best work. Love Patricia Cornwell though. Read most of her books
Well it came from USA for the organization i once volunteer. They sent notebooks and books for homeless people in my country because of the earthquake. It was wrapped so no one knew what was inside ? They handed me that and i took it. But after reading i feel so fool ? Later i found two of my friends has got the same copy. Americans send erotic novel to homeless people in Nepal ?
I refuse to read the Richard Castle books. Was so excited when they came out and the grammar was atrocious!! Can’t stand to ready poorly written books. Never finished it and will not read another.
Hurts so good.its like an erotica and someone gave it to me to read.I was like, halp this is too much am not even 18 yet.the sex scenes were basically tooo much and mature for me,i never finished the book cuz it was too uncomfortable i did not see the difference between watching porn and reading that rag…..
Probably not my actual worst read but I’ve only read it a few days ago so my not so good feelings for this book are still quite er…fresh? Title was Apprentice by Rachel E. Carter btw.
Belong to you by Vi Keeland, the writing and characters are just awful! ?
Some are better than others.
Tale of Two Cities! I couldn’t do it in high school, and I tried about 6 months ago and nope! Just can’t to it.
I never had this experience. I have always liked the books i have read because I always make sure to do a lot of research on them before diving into them to make sure I’ll like them.
planet shampoo from Douglas Coupland,
I have never heard of this one… 🙂
It’s horrible!!!
That doesn’t even sound like it could be good. Lol!
I love his books but I do agree, not a great read
Twilight. My niece wanted me to read it and she is my sweet girl so I did. Written at a 3rd grade level, characters without any character, horrible, creepy stalker portrayed as “romantic,” just… awful all around. Unreadable.
I liked all of them wasn’t a big fan of the movies
God of small things .it was depressing.
Really?! It was so beautiful written and highlighted the very realities!
Classic wise, I would have to say “Catcher in the Rye”. I just disliked it immensely. And as far as other more contemporary books “Wolf Hall”. I don’t persevere any more now with a book I’m not enjoying. Life’s too short and there are too many good books out there ?
Petals on the wind by V.C. Andrews. The Voldemort of all books I’ve ever read.
The ashack …. I know everyone loves it but I couldn’t wait to finish it and b done with it …. Sonething I just did not enjoy about it …. The murder of the little girk and get father’s grief where too much for me at the time . I’ll see the movie soon .
The shack
The great gatsby. The language and the dialogue were bad. The characters are weak and superficial plus the events are empty and bad !
I have to admit I haven’t read it, but the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio is one of my all-time fave’s!
The movie is much better than the book.
1984 and animal farm
So worse that I can’t even remember the title?.
In literature, has to be Tale of Two Cities by Dickens. He got paid per word and it shows. Popular fiction-wise, it’s a toss-up between Don Delillo’s White Noise and Gone Girl.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green
That was a great book
The Elegance of the Hedgehog By Muriel Barbery. The idea was good, a housekeeper lady who likes to read and knows a lot about everything meets a girl who wants to commit suicide because she can’t find a place in the world, but the writing is bad and the characters hideous, so you definitely hate them. There is a very unlikely love story. And the ending is just stupid. The only good thing about this book is the title.
Breaking Dawn.
? out of all twlight series that was my favourite x
Wolf Hall !
The wizard of earth sea, it literally bored me to tears every time I tried to read it in English class and at home….my English teacher then told me that he was counting on me being the only one to actually read the book…..oops sorry not sorry
It wouldn’t be fair to say, cause I don’t finish books I’m not enjoying…
By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept, by Elizabeth Smart. It was just a pity party in writing! The author loved a bloke, but he was already spoken for, and so Smart wrote this moany little book about how unfair she thought it was, like she was an overgrown child! 50 shades of grey
Moon Palace by Paul Auster
If it is not a page turner, I don’t continue…Perhaps we all have different taste in books… 🙂
Mocking jay and 50 shades of Grey
Maybe someday and hunger games. I was so angry about hunger games I never finished the last book and I never watched all the movies.
I loved the Hunger Games books xx
The cheating just made me angry. I’ve been in situations like that and it didn’t appeal to me. Plus I never got the feeling that there was deep love between Sydney and Ridge. I don’t know just everything made me angry lol
Everything by Dickens. Sorry, I just feel that he uses unnecessary description all the time, which makes the story longer than it really should be.
That’s probably because they were originally magazine serials, which meant a certain amount had to be written every month. Being popular at the time, I suspect Wilkie Collins decided that they should simply be turned into books without further editing. A little judicious skipping might be in order, though I don’t recommend it lightly. 🙂
The Watchers Trilogy by SJ West. I finished the entire set to see if there was a single redeeming quality.
There wasn’t. P
I remember the good ones. Must of them are by French or French Canadian writers. Except in English classes, I read the handmade’s tale n I loved it
Revival by Stephen King. It’s the book that made me decide to never keep reading a book just hoping it would get better.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies tied with Twilight. Horrible and immature writing, I’ve read better fanfic.
I couldn’t even finish ppz
Such a disaster of a book, mind you Pride and Prejudice is my all time favorite so I was super disappointed.
I can imagine
Mystic river. The way it was written was so jumbled that the plots transition was so confusing. I only read half of the page and stopped because it was so awful (no offense to the writer.)
I Loved the book, in fact after I read it I read every other thing he wrote which they all our great. Dennis LeHane is the author. I have to say I saw the movie before I read the book they followed the book exactly, the book was more In-depth which books are,the movie was great but the book was better to me.
Dancing Cats of Applesap. Author can’t remember. It’s only worse because it was the first time I realized a book could be bad!
Because I Am Furniture. It was written in verse, when it really could’ve just been a regular book.
Gullivers travels
“The Bridges of Madison County.” The author was so obviously describing himself when he described the protagonist and was clearly madly in love with his own creation!
The Pearl – John Steinback
It was just terrible
The plot was horrid and he’d literally describe a tree for 3 pages. It was awful
Yes, I had to do that for an exam. Oh, my Go-o-o-d!!
I’m glad it wasn’t just me! omg
Do you like any of Steinback’s writing in general? I’m not a huge fan but I didn’t entirely hate Of Mice and Men.
J Joyce’s Ulysses! ughh!!
The water is wide by Pat Conroy. I had to read it freshman year, so i may feel differently now but i hated it then.
Legend… i made myself read two of the three. But the writing wasnt great and the story was bland.
Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Oh, can’t agree with you there. Richard Bach is an excellent writer. Try his collection ‘A Gift of Wings’. Only one article has anything to do with seagulls 🙂
Wake, Fade, and Gone. The series overall was pretty good, but the way it was written irritated me so much. In most of the paragraphs she would write a sentence describing something and then the next sentence would literally be the same thing, but worded differently.
And you read all the books ?
Winters Tale written by Mark Helprin. So incredibly bad I don’t know where to start
The End of Alice…I can’t….I just…I don’t want to talk about it *shudders*
That’s on my wishlist.
It is a very disturbing book. And not in any type of good way. The author was clearly going for a purely shock and awe factor. I found the book complete disgusting and I can’t believe I even finished it.
I like disturbing. It takes a lot to bother me.
I’m that way too. So clearly, this is a lot lol.
The wizard of Oz. I just did not enjoy it, didn’t like the writing and the death scene was HORRIBLE! It was such a disappointment! For once, the movie was better then the book!
The machete by James Patterson I loveeeeee his books but that one just rubbed me the wrong way
The Book Thief.
Just curious, why didn’t you like The Book Thief?
I didn’t like the book thief either, I struggled to get absorbed by it and upon watching the film, enjoyed it much more than the book
I think I actually read the whole book but can’t even remember it, so I’m thinking it was nothing special lol
Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire!!
I totally agree I really disliked this book too!
Brave New World. I hated every bit of it and what it stood for.

50 Shades of Grey by a landslide.
i am pilgrim by terry hayes….
Brave new world when I got to the end I just sat for a solid 20 minute like what on earth did I just read! x
I actually enjoyed Brave New World. Weird me I guess.
And to continue the discussion, why did you finish a book you were not enjoying?
I have to it’s a compulsion ?
I agree, @Zoe, it’s exceedingly rare that I don’t finish a book; I think it’s happened about twice, & I felt guilty on each occasion. I suspect we’re subconsciously hoping it’ll improve right up to the end 🙂
I felt that way until I got to book 4 of GRRMartin’s fiasco and then realized it’s just not worth the abuse. Lol
Thanks for the warning, @Sondra 🙂
The second book, waterfall, in the Tear Drop books by Lauren Kate. Absolutely horrible ending. Same goes with the last book of the Maximum Ride series.
I try to finish books. There are only a couple that I’ve given up on. It’s almost like a challenge to myself to finish a book even if I’m not that into it.
I do this but there are a few books that I haven’t been able to even force myself to finish 🙁
Gone Girl. Hated the book, hated the movie! Extremely poor writing, rambling, boring, and incredibly predictable ending. I thought for once the movie just had to be better than the book, but no; equally terrible.
That’s one of my favorite books. I didn’t like the movie at all though.
You may also enjoy “The Good Girl” by Mary Kubica. The plot is a bit like “Gone Girl” but I enjoyed it so much more!
any thing by Hannah Howell. I have read 2 of her books and she is a real prude. This is my opinion and freedom of speech.
The Temple of my Familiar. Alice Walker. Every time I tried to read it, I would get to a certain part and fall of the edge of the world!
Try again I did the same I put it down I picked it up months later and finished it and loved it.
(I haven’t read Grey yet, and I’m not sure if I’m going to)
I totally agree. No one goes from being a meek virgin to having hardcore BDSM sex 10 times a freaking day!
Not in the course of a week and a half.
Yes, I should have added so quickly. I’m sure that does happen, but definitely not the way it did in the book.
I felt it was kind of a rip off of the movie Pretty Woman. The first book. I’ve only read the first book.
Especially when she just about had no idea what sex even was. She had never even HEARD of Christian Grey until her friend made her go. And somehow of all the available, women in the city…..he chooses the kind of homely girl? That just didn’t seem right to me.
Recipes from the dump
I found 1984 depressing and quit after 50 pages. I don’t think it’s the book or the author but the dystopian genre that doesn’t agree with me. I did enjoy Fahrenheit 451, though, which I believe is the same genre.
50 shades. I couldn’t finish the first chapter. Followed by Twilight.
The sky is everywhere by Jandy Nelson
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. I had to read it for my honors English class and I could not for the life of me get into it. Ended up getting thoroughly frustrated a quarter of the way through and had to spark note the rest of it to pass the tests and assignments.
I was that way with Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy. Ended up using Coles Notes (‘this was in the late 70’s) and got an A!
The reformed vampire support group. The main character was just so whiny. And there were at times, because of how many characters the author and presented, you couldn’t tell who was speaking. Also the plot was just a bit hard to follow
Granny Dan by Danielle Steele. Just terrible, seemed like it was written by a 12 year old, and made me think someone else wrote it.
Mac flacknoe
Dear John-Nicholas Sparks
I have never read anything by Nicholas Sparks and I have absolutely no desire to.
I haven’t read anything thing by him since! ???
50 shades of Grey. Didn’t read it though. I suffered through 4 chapters.
Lord of the flies. It was so difficult to get through and I only finished It because high school
please don’t hate me but, Farwell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway…I had to read it for my Composition 2 class and I hated it so much…it’s terrible.
twilight
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. This is one time the movie is better than the book. The book went nowhere.I gave up when she said the killer’s mother left when he was a child. You murdered an innocent 14 year old girl & we’re supposed to feel sorry for you, I’m sorry I can’t.
I wasn’t nuts about it either. basically, the last page was the best
The Scarpetta Factor. Just couldn’t get into it even although fans and critics said it is her best work. Love Patricia Cornwell though. Read most of her books
Marked ( house of night). I didnt like the main girl’s character
Oddly enough that’s my favourite series ..
??????
Slade. ? It was erotic novel. Someone gifted me that ??
who would give an erotic novel as a gift?
Well it came from USA for the organization i once volunteer. They sent notebooks and books for homeless people in my country because of the earthquake. It was wrapped so no one knew what was inside ?
They handed me that and i took it. But after reading i feel so fool ?
Later i found two of my friends has got the same copy. Americans send erotic novel to homeless people in Nepal ?
That’s really messed up! Who would think after an earthquake you’d want/most importantly NEED that?
It took up space that actual useful things could have occupied
the whole twilight series, hunger games. in fact anything like that. I will rather chew my eyes out than read it again.
Wicked. So very political.
I refuse to read the Richard Castle books. Was so excited when they came out and the grammar was atrocious!! Can’t stand to ready poorly written books. Never finished it and will not read another.
Vampire academy and house of night.. rose got really annoying and got uncomfortable with the sex scenes
50 Shades
Eat Pray Love. She was a whiney, smug, self satisfied idiot. So I gave up! ??
I made it through about 1/3 of the book and gave up. What a selfish woman.
I was not even able to finish watching the movie…
Probably not my actual worst read but I’ve only read it a few days ago so my not so good feelings for this book are still quite er…fresh? Title was Apprentice by Rachel E. Carter btw.
