I was probably hooked by mom reading books and some t m, but the first chapter books I remember and still have are Bobbsey Twins and then I really liked the Cherry Ames Nurse books. My mom was in Doubleday book club back in the early 59’s so that is where I developed my love of reading.
Judy Blume’s Fudge books.
But I didn’t become an avid reader until after college.
The first series I loved were The Boxcar Children and Little House on the Prairie. I re-read them recently with my niece as a “book club” lol
Little House on the Prairie and Encyclopedia Brown were my favorites. I also loved my sister’s Nancy Drew and my Mom’s Bobbsey Twins books.
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder in the second grade 🙂

I remember my mom ordering me a subscription to “humpty dumpty” magazines . I couldn’t wait to read them when they arrived in the mail!

I didn’t find my love for reading until high school. I only read when I had to until then. The Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Green was my first book love. I had to read it in 9th grade English and then even got the sequel to read. ? it was also the start of my love of WWII books.
Oh my gosh…that book was my first love too…now I know author will try and find for my daughter. Thnk u. J

Nancy Drew and The Little House on the Prairie books.
For me it was Cherry Ames. When I was young I wanted to be a nurse so this series intrigued me. I think that is was I love mysteries so much even today. No I never became a nurse.
The Babysitters Club
I fell in love with reading when I read the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingles Wilder and the Ramona Quimby by Beverly Cleary.
When I was little I would accompany my mom to the nursery school in my building. She was the cleaning lady and in return I was allowed to attend. I loved sitting down and looking at their books: Corduroy and Harry the Dirty Dog will always hold a special place in my heart.
Harry the Dirty Dog – what a great book.

Fun first-grade primers featuring Dick, Jane, Puff, and Spot. Great reading for a 1950s six-year-old.
A Child’s Garden of Verses! My favorite book when I first learned to read!
I had many childhood favorite story books, but the first novel that I read was Old Yeller in the 3rd grade and my love for reading was ignited ♡
I can’t remember that far back…I have always love to read since early childhood…and I am in my mid 40’s now
Nancy drew
American Girls sets…
Read everyone of the sets that were out when I was a kid (Kirsten, Samantha, Molly, Addy, & Felicity).
Unfortunately, my daughter never cared for them…she’s more into creepy books…
Granted, I loved Goosebumps & Fear Street books as well…so not complete loss on my daughter lol
I already loved to read, but in about 3rd or 4th grade, our teacher would read to us for 30 minutes each afternoon, starting with “The Secret in the Covered Wagon.” I think that teacher helped many students develop a love for reading.
I had a 4th grade teacher like that. She started me on the Little House books.
Probably the Nancy Drew series. I haunted the library waiting for the next one, but have always read a lot of different things. Still love to read.
I was a late bloomer so to speak, i did not read for fun until my 20s. The Womens Murder club and Twilight started my binge reading.
The Bobbsey Twins
Little House series , Nancy Drew, anything by Judy Blume, The Bobby Twins…..LOVED Beverly Cleary!
I loved the Boxcar Children too. I have them in my stash of books and have read them to my girls years ago.
Honestly, I grew up a block from the library. I can’t remember when I didn’t have a love for books. We were the family that carried them out by grocery sacks. Now I am manager of that library!
Anna of Green cable
Little House on the Prairie and Babysitters Club were mine
Little Women.
The Little Women trilogy: Little Women, Little Men, Jo’s Boys. (My favorite of the trilogy was the last–Jos Boys). Then I discovered her lesser known books Eight Cousins and its sequel Rose in Bloom, which I liked better than her more famous Little Women series.

Oh my I remember that book..I loved it!!! Boxcar children…wow. that brings me way back!
If we are going right back to the start probably the Mr Men and Little Miss books really got me going. My brother taught me to read and spell maybe with those books! First I could read by myself 🙂

Maybe the Bobbsey Twins!
The Wizard of Oz series, used to own the whole series until a move several yrs ago where the thieves stole our Hertz Penske truck…we got some things back, but my books weren’t any of those things, had to replace them. This was 16 yrs ago and I am still replacing my books. Haven’t found the complete set of The Wizard of Oz yet…would prefer the set and not piecemeal if you know what I mean….anyway, yeah, The Wizard of Oz, think I read it the first time in 2nd or 3rd grade back in the early 70s
Everything ?
Bobsey Twins
The Little House on the Praire books
When I was in kindergarten, my grandparents gave me two Bobbsey Twins mysteries and I was hooked. I went on to read every Trixie Belden book I could find. Then it was Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and the Cherry Ames nurse series. By then I was in the fourth grade and I could go to the public library and I went every few weeks reading to my heart’s content! <3
I had forgotten the Cherry Ames books! Thank you for reminding me, Barbara!
Little House Books & The Boxcar Children.
Does anyone remember the Maida series? I wanted Maida’s father to adopt me!

Hmmm…..it was probably either the Nancy Drew books or The Bobsey Twins. Discovered both of them about the same time. Also, does anybody remember the books that featured Annette (of Mickey Mouse Playhouse fame.) I loved those, too.
