I’ve just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. It was a very special and moving book and hopefully one that will stay around for a long time.
I think it was well publicised and hyped up. I don’t think it’s stood the test of time and it’s not that old. Can’t see it being read in 50 years time, let alone another 10.
This is hard to determine as what is really a classic. Is it longevity. If longevity I would have to say Mercedes Lackey in fantasy is probably one of the longest running authors and her arrows trilogy is the best of her work.
If you go horror it would probably be Stephen king and his work It.
I think Gone Girl will be a classic. It has all of the qualifications for it. 1. You either love it or hate it. 2. It inspired authors and was a game changer, classics change the way we read, think, and write. 3. It was it’s in a class by itself, and since they have been looking for the next one, like singers are always being called the next Michael Jackson, comics are called the next Eddie Murphy, etc. and it’s just hype because they are. This year’s Gone Girl, won’t live up to Gone Girl there is only one. Unfortunately new books will be continue to be compared to Gone Girl. 4. It won’t go away people are still talking about it.
My son just had to read this for his gifted class. I honestly believe this should be required reading. Beautiful and so needed for these days. Kindness rules!

I thought exactly the same!
I think the moralistic questions posed by the light between oceans

I loved The Slap. It’s brilliantly written and always sparks conversation, which is a sign of a classic I think!
I could not get on with The Slap – it got on my nerves!
Dreadful book!
Sebastian Faulks’s Birdsong deserves a place as a reminder of the horrors and futility of the First World War.

Along this same lines would be In ColdBlood by Truman capote — creating the true crime genre.
Goldfinch
Dove keepers
Jojo Moyes …Me before you…??
Adventure to DESTINY THE UNITY OBJECTIVE
Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. Very controversial and both had twists no one saw coming. The movies also helped them with hype.
All the light we cannot see. Almost the perfect novel.
Before I go to sleep…
The Nightingale
Wonder

Sarah’s Key. Such a heartbreaking story.
It was badly executed, in my opinion. Good concept, but she couldn’t hold it together.
@Joel just realised I have posted this on the wrong thread ?Was answering a thread about which book made you cry!!!
Oh? I guess that makes more sense!
@Joel yup, definitely not a classic in my opinion either. But it made me weep buckets!
The time travelers wife, a thousand splendid suns, the bell jar, the secret life of bees
Would Lord of the rings count?
That’s probably already considered a classic. When I think ‘modern’, I’m thinking 1995 and later.
Saturday – Ian McEwan. Reminded me of Joyce’s The Dead
When Breath Becomes Air
A Little Life
One Day
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
A little life
The Book Thief.
Cloud Atlas, The Goldfinch
Following so I can get some book ideas!
The Handmaid’s Tale
A Monster Calls?
Outlander
I haven’t read it, but people talk about Infinite Jest. Does it deserve to be called a modern classic, or it is hyped by intellectual snobs?
Stephen King, the stand
I am pilgrim
Confederacy of Dunces
The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto.
The Curious incident of the dog in the night time.
