Back Description Product description Wally Lamb, the beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much Is True, and She’s Come Undone, delivers a holiday treat with Wishin’ and Hopin’—an unforgettable novella that captures the warmth and joy of the holiday season. Poignant and hilarious, in a vein similar to Jean Shepherd’s A Christmas Story and David Sedaris’s The Santaland Diaries, Lamb’s Christmas tale focuses on a feisty parochial school fifth grader named Felix Funicello—a distant cousin of the iconic Annette!
Review “In the hands of Wally Lamb, what emerges isn’t an apology but a celebration of life…Felix makes a hilarious guide through a story that whirs right along.” (Washington Post)
“Lamb’s rich panoply of details…render this novel first-rate escapism just begging for a comforter and a cup of tea.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
“Warmly, sweetly retro” (Kansas City Star)
“Lamb gets Felix’s voice just right, and he does a spot-on job of evoking the special joys and trials of parochial school in the ‘60’s” (St. Petersburg Times)
“Lamb’s vividly detailed portrait of the 1960’s and the inner workings of a Catholic schoolboy’s mind puts his first Christmas book on par with his previous three novels.” (Miami Herald)
“Lamb…proves he can be short, sweet and funny” (USA Today)
“Wishin’ and Hopin’ from Wally Lamb reminds us of what innocence was like.” (Body and Soul)
“Both heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny…a cast of characters that are both uproarious and unforgettable…a poignant reminder that family and friends are the greatest gift of all.” (Hartford Books Examiner)
We might as well call Wally Lamb the man with the golden pen…[Wishin’ and Hopin’] will leave you laughing and thinking nostalgically about your own school days and holidays past” (BookPage)
“Lamb is a very good writer, and Wishin’ and Hopin’ is a charming read with a genuinely funny ending.” (Houston Chronicle)
From the Back Cover With his latest story, WISHIN′ AND HOPIN′, Wally Lamb takes a turn toward the lighthearted and laugh-provoking. In a vein similar to Jean Shepherd′s A Christmas Story and David Sedaris′s The Santaland Diaries, Lamb′s holiday tale focuses on a feisty parochial school fifth grader named Felix Funicello–a distant cousin of the iconic Annette! Both poignant and hilarious, WISHIN′ AND HOPIN′ transports us back to October, November, and December of 1964, when LBJ and Lady Bird were in the White House, Meet the Beatles was on everyone′s turntables, and Christmas meant mistletoe, mangers, and midnight mass. Then it propels us from the past to the present so that we might measure what we′ve gained and what we′ve lost.
About the Author Wally Lamb is the author of five New York Times bestselling novels: She’s Come Undone, I Know This Much Is True, The Hour I First Believed, Wishin’ and Hopin’, and We Are Water. His first two works of fiction, She’s Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True, were both #1 New York Times bestsellers and selections of Oprah’s Book Club. Lamb edited Couldn’t Keep It to Myself and I’ll Fly Away, two volumes of essays from students in his writing workshop at York Correctional Institution, a women’s prison in Connecticut, where he has been a volunteer facilitator for seventeen years.
Very cliche, but every year I reread The Christmas Carol and Cricket on the Hearth, Christmas Eve read The Night Before Christmas and Christmas morning read Luke chap 2.
@Barbara Alistair Sim’s reclamation is best but I also am fond of Reginald Owen & Patrick Stewart has grown on me as has George C Scott. I do not discount The Muppets or Mr Magoo. Basically, I love them all, as you can tell. ???
Well !!!! The greatest thing I ever read was ” Esther’s Gift ” from one of the Mitford books. They fall just short of being too sentimental but this one is a gem !! Very funny , too , for ” old- – marrieds ” ha ha . I read this one aloud to Mister B while he is cutting garlic in the kitchen. Afraid my voice breaks at the end !!! Am such a softie !! But , plus !! You get a recipe for some thing SO divine yo daren’t not make it but once a year !! SO, you get two for one !!
Every Christmas Eve we read A Visit from Saint Nicholas, the Nativity Story, The Friendly Beasts, and a few others. We are in our 4th generation of this tradition.
I have several books I always read at Christmas. Christmas Gift! by Ferrol Sams, The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree by Gloria Houston, and Angel Doll by Jerry Bledsoe and Tim Rickard. All put me in the Christmas spirit.
I used that book for a group of 5th grade students just last year and I’ll tell you we got into some deep discussions about judging people. Love that book!
Remember this so clearly. I almost sent it to my son. He took all four of the kids on a cruise over the holidays. The kids hated it. We were so sad to miss Christmas with them. Didnt send him the book, but sure felt like it.
Ok. I am completely overwhelmed by all these amazing suggestions. They all sound wonderful. I have read many, but very far from even most of them. I have two granddaughters, one 4 and one almost 7. The elder one reads at a 5th grade level. Are there any Christmas books you would recommend for her especially any she could read to her 4 year old sister?
The Snowman’s Christmas Present is one I loved, my son loved and my grandkids loved. I had to buy it on EBay as it’s out of print. If you don’t want a pre-owned book, there is a book version of The Snowman and the video is gorgeous. Check out The Family Under the Bridge.
Look for a copy of the children’s titlt, THE NATIVITY by Julie Vivas. The editions Ican find now have three sngels looking over the nanger at the baby Jesus. The best one, the edition before has a reddish orange cover with a VERY pregnant Mary sitting on the donkey’s back, being led by Joseph, obviously on their way to.pay their taxes. I think i have bought every existing copy of this book for gifts. But if you can find this first edition, I would recommend you read it. You know the story, obviously. Butvthe illustrations that accompany the story arecwhat makes this such a nagnificent Christmas read. I pick it up often on the off season, just to reenjoy these illustrations with the story. People must have gotten the drift of this book’s eorth because second hand copies now sell for about $35. Mine, new, was $10.95. Find a library that still has a copy and have a delightful nativity experience. My money says you will not regret the search. You might even want one bad enough to spend the #35 for a personal copy. Sorry I kept buying all the Amazon copies for gifts. Happy hunting.

The Great Christmas Kidnapping Caper should be the right reading level and is a great story about mice saving the Macy’s Santa after he is kidnapped.
Me Willoughbys Christmas Tree!
The Polar Express
The Snowman’s Christmas Present is one I loved, my son loved and my grandkids loved. I had to buy it on EBay as it’s out of print. If you don’t want a pre-owned book, there is a book version of The Snowman and the video is gorgeous. Check out The Family Under the Bridge.
The Christmas Tree
The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree is a lovely Appalachian take which would be wonderful for your granddaughters.

The Winter Street series by Elin Hilderbrand
A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Never too old to love these books!
@Judy Thanks for sharing!

The stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore
Loved that. His books are always LOL funny. Have you read Lamb?
@Ann I loved Lamb, made me smile from the first few pages. I tell people all the time to read Lamb.
I used to hand out copies.
Not only is Lamb his finest novel, not only is Lamb hilarious, but it has a number of serious, thought-provoking, philosophical moments. There is one passage in particular that makes me tear up every time I think of it.
A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas.
I loved the old movie. Should add to my list this year. Thanks for reminding me.
Hilarious book!
The Academy Street Theatre Group, an arts education program of the Cherokee County School District in Canton, GA., has presented this as a play each year since 1992, this is year 26! A beloved Christmas tradition for everyone!
@Janice That’s fabulous!! I’ve always wanted to see a live performance of this story ?
