Nearly Departed in Deadwood by Ann Charles, takes place in my state and is on my tbr list
Wow! I am impressed. I was not sure about South Dakota.
Nothing good happens in Florida.
Lies!
Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston (and the Zora Festival takes place in Eatonville every year)
The Cypress House by Michael Koryta takes place in the Tampa area
Hoot by Carl Hiaasen (actually most of his works, for adults and for kids, are set in Florida)
I’m sure there is plenty of true crime that are great reads!
Yeah there are some good true crime… but that only enhances my statement that nothing good happens here.
This one. “Mga Pusong Nadiskaril sa Mahabang Riles ng Pag-Ibig” is tramslated as “(The) Derailed Hearts in the Long Rails of Love.” These stories took place in Cubao, a certain place in Quezon City.
Kind of cheating here because the books are set in Westeros buuuuttt Westeros is filmed in Northern Ireland for the TV series so I’m going to go with Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire ?
I live in the middle of nowhere, but part of American Gods takes place in Northern WI, and it mentions my tiny hometown a couple of times. This is as close as it gets ? But I would recommend that one!
I like Michael Perry, especially “Population 485”, which takes place in rural Wisconsin!
Takes place in Maine, right in the area I live in
I have a penfriend from Scarborough (Nicole); she has sent me many Maine postcards with her letters and the state looks so beautiful!!
@Yurena it is gorgeous!
The obvious is The Fault in our Stars by John Green, another good book is The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington. Actually there are others set in Indianapolis, but here are two.
Crimes in southern Indiana
Hunger Games—district 12 is in Appalachia or strange as the weather has been by Ann Pancake
Detached by Wendy Weiss – takes place is Fort Myers, FL
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants ?
The House of Night series!!!
Me too ?
Also The Outsiders by SE Hinton
Some of Jennifer armentrouts books take place in the black hills which surround my home town
I’m from FL, there are lots of good books about our area, and a lot of local writers too. I’m in central FL, but these are all over FL, I’ve been to many of the places they take place.
And actually, I’m from Syracuse, NY and live in Central Florida, so there are quite a few stories about NY too.
Basically all of Laurie Halse Anderson’s books are set in Syracuse or Albany, NY. Speak and Catalyst are my two favorites. :).
Dandelion Wine and Farewell Summer take place in Waukegan, IL (where I live), but Ray Bradbury changed the name of the town to something like Greenville. But there are a lot of things he didn’t change the name of that I recognize as being around my house.
Here’s a list I’m now perusing myself.
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/18064.Books_Set_in_Massachusetts
I live in London so the list is long. 1984 by George Orwell, Bridget Jones, The girl on the train, The Picture of Dorian Gray, the strange case of Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde, Harry Potter…
CJ Box Joe Pickett series and Craig Johnson’s Longmire series 🙂
Based in Wyoming where both authors live
the valley of the moon by jack london
Demarest Kill, a miser mystery set in my hometown of New City, New York, by Eberling
The only book I know of that’s in Oregon is ‘If I stay’ by Gayle Foreman. Though in Vampire Academy, it is mentioned that they were in Oregon for some time. But I don’t expect any books to be in Eugene
i think The Shack is based in Oregon (he stops at Multnomah Falls). I vaguely remember reading The Case of Einstein’s Violin. I think it starts in Eugene, OR, but also goes through Europe.
@Barbara I forgot about The Shack! And I’ll definitely look into the other one!
Also Twilight. Lol.
@Maia that was filmed in Oregon, but takes place in Washington lol
Oh. Lol.
Tara Holloway series by Diane Kelly. IRS Agent in Dallas TX, funny to boot!
One year by gayle forman
Falling By Christopher Pike. It takes place in Orange County California. There is even a scene that takes place at a phone booth that I’ve used before (yes I’m that old!) The book is a wonderful psychological thriller.
I picked this from KINDLE unlimited and didn’t even know it took place in my hometown!
Yes! Mainly mineral and Louisa but they talk about cville. It’s free on KU and has audio ❤
Little Women
The Help, Mississippi Mud, almost anything by Greg Iles.
The After Party by Anton DiSclafani
I have no idea. Lol. I was raised in Wyoming, and mostly only westerns are based in Wyoming and I absolutely do not like westerns. I find them super boring.
And now I live in Utah. Not sure I’ve really ever found a book set where I live. I mean, maybe. But I often don’t really pay much attention to the location.
Brokeback Mountain is set in Wyoming. If you like mysteries, CJ Box’s novels are set in Wyoming, too. Fatal Descent is a mystery by Beth Groundwater set in Canyonlands in Utah. Of course, I think most set in Utah are Mormon-type stories, whether historical fiction or Christian fiction or those along those lines.
Planet I.A. 2068 by Chan Neled. At Kindle E-book Store for $2.99.
Constructed for Glory
The greywalker series by Kat Richardson. Takes place in Seattle and the surrounding area.
Too Much Trouble In Paradise by Michelle Betham LOL no! I would not recommend this at all but it was funny to read this and other books talking about the (quoting from the novel) “drop-dead gorgeous men from Tenerife” which is my homeland 🙂 One I would definitely recommend is https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26222587-the-drago-tree I love the way the writer shows her love for the Canary Islands on the book and it is so well written. She is Australian or British, I can’t remember. The plot takes place in Lanzarote, another one of our islands. The Swedish crime fiction writer Mari Jungstedt lives 6 months per year in Gran Canaria for inspiration -or so she said on an interview, she loves Canarian culture- and she is writing a crime novel series based on the islands. I have not read the first two but I will for sure.
The Fixer Upper Book (whatever it’s called ?) – with Chip & Joanna Gaines
We Are Called to Rise by Laura McBride
I wouldn’t lol
My New Zealand Story: Earthquake!
Half of a Yellow Sun – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria)
Fantastic novel!
Yeah.
The only book that I know that takes place where I live is my own book’s. Enlightened is the only one published so far and takes place in mostly in the after life.
Friday night lights! It’s the only book I can think of based in my town. This town thrives on oil & football so it fits. ?
I love Friday Night Lights.
@Blair you mean FNL the TV series?!? I adored it, I am still recovering from the “heartbreak” of this coming to an end. Was it filmed in your town too?
Beautiful Creatures. Not quite Charleston but they visit the downtown area. Still South Carolina
Pat Conroy’s “South of Broad”
From London, Ontario. Lucan is nearby. So I recommend anything written on The Black Donnellys ?
Turtles All the Way Down –John Green
lol Esperanza Rising is the closest…
If you are a baseball fan…The Final Season by Tom Stanton. Tom decides to take his dad to all the home games of the Detroit Tigers during their last season at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. They now play at Comerica Park. He describes feelings, memories and stories about some of the great players, and also stories about the people who worked there for many years. My daughter and I go to Tiger games and we were there that final year.
The Angels Without Wings Series. Not quite where I live, but close!
Reboot set inTX. Dystopian but so darn good
Who is the author, @Quiana? It sounds really interesting, I adore dystopian novels.
Amy Tintera. Let me know if you read it. Its a duology. Second is probably the best though
I will 🙂 for sure, I am going to order both books on Friday (payday) Edited: Thanks for letting me know the author’s name!
Np!
I’ve never seen a book where I live. Lol. I was very excited to see that Wings by Aprilynn Pike takes place one county over in a rural area I have actually visited!
Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I live about 30 to 40 minutes away from the location in WV that she used for most of the Lux Series.
@Margie @Anna @Joan??? Any ideas
What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman took place at the Willard Asylum in Willard, N.Y., near Seneca Lake.
Speak by Laurie Halsy Anderson is Syracuse, NY
Yes!!!
I thought so to.
The River Why starts in Portland, OR and moves to the Coastal Range. The Program series is also set in the Portland area, as are Roller Girl, This Side of Home, and April Henry’s YA thrillers.
The devil tree by Keith rommel
The kids series ‘The Totally Ninja Raccoons’ by Kevin @Kasey
To be honest… I don’t know any good stories placed in switzerland… except for maybe Heidi…
Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs
Kevin Coolidge’s “Totally Ninja Raccoons” series for children takes place in and around my hometown in Wellsboro, PA. Karla Jay’s novel, “Speaking in Tungs” takes place in this area, and a YA historical fiction called “Breadline Blue” also centers on the Wellsboro area during the Depression years.
“13 ways looking at a fat girl” by Mona Awad (I am in Mississauga, ON, Canada)
The Dead Key by D. M. Pulley. Cleveland Ohio
Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan. it’s a really sweet middle grade novel that takes place in my hometown of Bakersfield, California 🙂
The Goldfinch or The Stand.
