The potato factory is amazing
I love the A hangman‘s daughter series a lot.
Ooohhhh Kelly! I finished “A Column of Fire” by Ken Follett last night and it BLEW me away! I don’t want to spoil too much but it’s basically about the reign of Elizabeth Tudor and the Mary Stuart thing BUT so so so much more than that. I couldn’t put it down. Reeeeeeeeeeead it! You HAFTA!
Wow thanku!! I’m on it
The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George.
Orphan Tale
Hehehe… Historical fiction. “Disappearing into the past”

Between Shades of Gray, Salt to the Sea, and Out of the Easy. All three are by Ruta Sepetys’ books.

Following up on that…the great alone was really good as well
@Sara not read that, I’ll pop it on list x
The great alone was really good! I tend not to put it in the historical fiction in my head.
The Molly Murphy mysteries
Poisonwood Bible, Kingsolver – Sarah’s Key, Rosney – Immortal Wife, Stone – Love is Eternal, Stone – The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Sklot Non-fiction! – Those who Save Us, Blum – Prayers for Sale, Dallas – Birdsong, Faulks – Orphin Train, Kline. Also one of my favorite genres!
Outlander!
Those who save us.
Memoirs of a Geisha.
And I don’t know if Kite Runner, Joy Luck Club & A Thousand Splendid Suns are historical fiction, but those are great as well.
Eventually, I will read all the novels by Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. They are so authentic, because they are written in the 19th century where they take place. They are slow-moving and use unusual and archaic words. I read a few on kindle, where you can get definitions, but sometimes the words are too old. Sometimes they take many days or even weeks to read. You will learn about true poverty, kindness, and evil. But you will also learn that human nature hasn’t changed much.
Anything by Michener.
Yes! His research and realism are phenomenal!
The queen’s fool, Phillipa Gregory
I like historical fiction, also. I read all of the Moreland Dynasty by Cynthia Harrod Eagles, and I like Anne Perry’s Victorian novels. Sandra Dallas has written The Persian Pickle Club which I liked because I lived close to the setting. Sue Monk Kidd The Invention of Wings. Ken Follett The Pillars of the Earth, Tasha Alexander. Elizabeth Peters., Georgette Heyer, Ruth Downie, Jacqueline Windspear has written the Maisie Dobbs series. Edith Wharton wrote The Age of Innocence. I am at the age where I mainly want escapism, not literary excellence.
Anything by Phillippa Gregory, Jean Paidy, Diana Galbadon
Alison Weir’s fiction books are fantastic too x
Best historical fiction I’ve read is Outlander.
Books by Philippa Gregory, Allison Weir, CW Gortner are all good
The Company of Liars by Karen Maitland.
The Book of Human Skin by Michele Lovric.
Burial Rites by Hannah Kent.
The House of Special Purpose by John Boyne.
Crippen by John Boyne.
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.
Remarkable Creatures by Tracey Chevalier.
All cracking, wonderful 5/5 stars reads.
The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah.
The seven sisters by Lucinda Riley
The Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. Takes place beginning pre-World War I; latest book deals with Dunkirk.
Outlander!
Anne Perry has two excellent historical fiction mystery series. The William Monk series is set in the Early Victorian era, (mid 1850s) and her Thomas & Charlotte Pitt series, which is set in the Late Victorian Era, (late 1880s)
Skeltons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian and Last Days of Night by Graham Moore.
The Invention Of Wings, Little Women, The Kitchen House, Outlander, Gone With the Wind, The Help, Life After Life.
The Pillars of the Earth Series; works by Uris; Weir; G. Brooks; Tipping the Velvet; etc… ?
weir who/what?
@Leslie: Alison Weir – she specializes in Early Mod English/continental historical fictions full of drama and excitement ?
oh Alison – big fan. thought there was a weir I hadn’t heard of. she does immpeccapble research and is such a good writer. i love her!
11/22/1963 by Stephen King
Sarah’s Key, Orphan Train, Before We Were Yours, The Storyteller….all fantastic!
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.
The Night Brother by Rosie Garland.
Vixen by Rosie Garland.
Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir.
I read The Golum and the Jinni for a book club and I really enjoyed it. It isn’t well contained in one genre, but some of the keywords in reviews are historical fiction, immigrant experience, fantasy, folk lore, etc. I thought it was beautifully written with detailed characters. The page number count is wrong on the page – I think it was about 500 pages.

This is one of my favorites
Ginger Gold series
Robert McCammon’s Matthew Corbett series taking place in Colonial America are great — not my favorite historical period, but he really brings it to life.
Ken Follett’s Kingsbridge and Century trilogies and Edward Rutherfurd’s books, London, New York, Paris and Sarum.
The Lion (or possibly, Lions) of Gwynneth, about the Welsh monarchy in the early part of the second millennium (maybe the 1200s?). Sorry, I don’t remember the author, but it was really good!
