I just read mine online. Places like literotica .com At least the majority of those authors actually have some clue about actual BDSM and how it works.
Kind of for me too – made more sense when someone mentioned they thought Ove was autistic. I thought he was around 80 when I started reading, found out later he was 59. It was a good read.
That’s just silly. There are no comparisons to be made outside they both deal with magic. Completely different magic systems too, so even that’s a pretty significant stretch.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell was marketed as Harry Potter for grownups, I remember seeing it in a shop, it was written on a card as a recommendation by one of the staff, which led me to buy it?I wouldn’t say it was Harry Potter for grownups, it is completely different from HP, the fact that there was magic in both books/series was slim at best?
Oh good, you saw a it too! I’m not totally bonkers..yet. It was interesting, but I had to work at sticking with it. Totally different from my HP experience.
@Vicki very different experience, I didn’t enjoy ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell’ the first time I read it, I got a lot more from it, the second reading?
I hope I didn’t ruin your current read or favorite! Remember Baskin Robbins made 31 flavors for a reason! We all like different things! ❤️❤️❤️ It just didn’t live up to the hype for me ??♀️
Harry potter, girl on a train I hated both. Before you potter heads start giving me abuse I read four of the books and couldn’t see what all the fuss was about.
I am a Potterhead that understands that many don’t like it I think for many like myself who read it as the books were being released it’s hard to see how some people are like “meh” but I personally LOVE HP but sometimes think people overhype it. It fills a special place in my heart, but its not for everyone.
@Lelani I’m a 65 year old who loves HP too. As soon as the book or movie came out…read it, watched it. Even have some figurines, etc. Of course my daughter got me hooked. <3
@Michele I really liked this because he was honest and a very humble doctor. Neurologists spend hours standing and most of them will not give you the time of day. But I found him to be compassionate. Also very interesting that he has a double degree, one in English Lit. A very interesting man. I think the hype just killed it for some people. I read it before it became too famous.
Real Sex – The truth about chastity. It had no hype. I fell in love with the title. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very informative but has kinda squeezed everything in 1 book with a tiny font that made matters worse. I wanna keep reading but it doesn’t flow. I dunno, maybe I need to give it more time. ?
I’ve totally blocked the name of the book and its author, but it was so awful I tore it up and threw it in the trash. I never did that before and I’ve never done it since.
‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ series. I tried reading it in a 7 hour flight to Germany. Just wasn’t feeling it. Though I’m looking forward to the movie coming out.
The Shannara books by Terry Brooks. The show was actually better than the books, and the show was really cheesy and bad, but still better than the books ?♀️
The Fifty Shades series
@Carla all three books are the same ishhhh….
the worst BDSM erotica I’ve ever read
@Corinne that was my very first bdsm erotica read and I loved it. Please suggest more bdsm erotica books that did it for you.
I just read mine online. Places like literotica .com
At least the majority of those authors actually have some clue about actual BDSM and how it works.
Lora Leigh also has some good ones.
@Carla thanks.
The Darkest minds by alexandra bracken. It really wasnt that good imo.
Man Called Ove, Edgar Sawtelle, Time Traveller’s Wife, and so many more…
I’ve been wondering about A Man Called Ove. I’ve heard such rave reviews but I looked up the description and thought it sounded meh
It was meh, to me! :/
Kind of for me too – made more sense when someone mentioned they thought Ove was autistic. I thought he was around 80 when I started reading, found out later he was 59. It was a good read.
@LaVonne yeah from the description I’d probably assume autistic. But idk maybe one day I’ll read it? It’s just not calling out to me
He reminded me of my dad and that really turned me off. I got half way through and just couldn’t finish it.
Really liked Ove. He was a special man
I tried “Ove” and couldn’t get into it. I thought I was the only person. At some point I’ll give it another try.
The Haunted Mesa by Louis L’Amour…not sure what I expected, but it made me mad at the time. Since it’s been 30 years, I might try again..
Lovely Bones
Oh, I loved that one!
A Simple Favor and Fault In Our Stars.
The Girl on the Train, while I enjoyed the story and the characters it felt drawn out. Very wordy.
I enjoyed it after taking forever to get into it . But, I too felt not worth the hype!
I put it down after absolutely forcing myself to read 40%.
Barnes and Noble had posters everywhere for that one so I bought it. I still don’t know the point. Just a terrible book
Thirteen
The Black Jewels trilogy.
Girl on the Train
Girl Wash Your Face
Jonathan Strange and Doctor Norelle..too meandering. NOT like Harry Potter for grownups.
who in the world called it “Harry Potter for grownups”????
I thought that’s how it was advertised..could be thinking of a series whose name totally escapes me.
Well if someone marketed it as that they should lose their jobs.
I may be confusing it with the blurbs about Lev Grossman’s Magicians series.. but I do remember comparisons with Potter for Jonathan Strange too..
That’s just silly. There are no comparisons to be made outside they both deal with magic. Completely different magic systems too, so even that’s a pretty significant stretch.
That’s how I took both books..somebody was just trying to sell books.

The Woman in the window, Man Called Ove, Less. Edited to add Girl on the Train. ?♀️

I was disappointed.
This one really bothered me. I just found it unsettling…
If I stay
Life of Pi
The Notebook.
I think I’ve encountered more skill at writing and a more believable storyline from a 5th grader.
I know, but I loved it anyway!
To each their own. Not my cuppa tea.
Definitely to each his own, but I just can’t read Nicholas Sparks ?
@Paula same here. Too schlocky!
Catcher in the Rye
@Laura yes, this. Ugh!
Thank you!! Finally!
Ulysses- that stream of consciousness writing isn’t for me. Love his previous stuff.
The Selection series
Where the Crawdads Sing
The Wind Through the Keyhole from Stephen King
Any one with movies that people can’t shut up about!
The ministry of utmost happiness by roy…
The secret history by Donna tartt. I thought the characters were completely flat.
Ready player one
Agreed! I didn’t hate it but it was just kind of meh.
Night Circus
Devastating News.
I hope I didn’t ruin your current read or favorite!
Remember Baskin Robbins made 31 flavors for a reason!
We all like different things! ❤️❤️❤️ It just didn’t live up to the hype for me ??♀️
Too bad. But it was did appeal to a specific audience.
Into the Water
Girl on a Train
Miss Peregrine
Didn’t like any of them…
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Agree
Agree!
Agreed! I did not care for this book!
Harry potter, girl on a train I hated both. Before you potter heads start giving me abuse I read four of the books and couldn’t see what all the fuss was about.

When breath becomes air
Agree!
It was so hyped that i was really excited to read but it was just a story of someone there was no consistency…kinda boring.
I SO agree
It’s on my tbr pile. I’m be interested to see what I think…
@Michele yeah sure cause everyone has their own opinion.
@Wajiha
Introduction to Organic Chemistry—-could not get into it and my Professor agreed.
Ugh….
The Goldfinch by Donna Taart. I was really disappointed…
Same
yep
Agree
@Michele me too! Stopped at page 500… i’m surprised i went that far.
Big Fish by Daniel Wallace ~ one of the rare occasions, that I preferred the movie to the book?
the movie is really something special
@Corinne oh definitely Corrine, I love the movie x
1984
I’ve totally blocked the name of the book and its author, but it was so awful I tore it up and threw it in the trash. I never did that before and I’ve never done it since.
I read a goodreads review on the book Celeste by VC Andrews who said the exact same thing lol
‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ series. I tried reading it in a 7 hour flight to Germany. Just wasn’t feeling it. Though I’m looking forward to the movie coming out.
The Wife Between us
I liked that one but, sometimes it was hard to follow.
Ugh!
The Girl on The Train
Agreed!
The Woman in the Window, The Girl on The Train, The Nightingale, The DaVinci Code.
That’s a shame…especially The Nightingale. What was it that made you disappointed about them?
Too cliched in parts. Maybe if there’s a lot of hype around a book my expectations are too high and I don’t just immerse myself in the story ?
@Amanda that does happen sometimes. It would be better if they didn’t say so much and just let us make up our own minds.
@Amanda I loved The Nightingale. Didn’t like The Girl in the Train or the movie. Very disappointing when everyone said how good it was.
Shatter me series! House of Leaves, Gone Girl, The Woman in Cabin 10 just to name a few.
The marriage pact. I just didn’t like it.
What Alice Forgot
The Darkest Minds series
Agree with What Alice Forgot!
Sometimes I feel like the only one who didn’t like it. I’m glad to know that’s not the case.
I think the author is overhyped, in general.
I also agree with What Alice Forgot.
Infinite Jest—tried 3 times over a 20 year period
The Shannara books by Terry Brooks. The show was actually better than the books, and the show was really cheesy and bad, but still better than the books ?♀️
Little Fires Everywhere
Wuthering Heights. I just can’t get past the first few chapters. I just dislike the characters so much
@Carol Agreed
The Book Thief
Night Circus
I tried and could not finish
Anything written by Leigh Bardugo. Most young adult fantasy books that have been recommended to me.
Go Set a watchman
Catch-22
The Sound and the Fury. Great Expectations.
Grist Mill Road ?
Fifty Shades, Girl on the Train, Anna Karenina, Catcher in the Rye.
@Dianne I was disappointed with Girl on the Train especially after all the hype about it.
I know. Then someone gave me The Woman in Cabin 10 and I felt I was reading Girl on a Train but on a boat.
Little Fires Everywhere (didn’t finish)
Wild (hated it)
I barely made it past the first few pages of Little Fires.
Gilead by Marilyn Robinson.
Oh I second that one?
The Book Thief
Interesting. Just curious – why not?
@Michele I was expecting it to be great. It was just ok. ?
I agree about the Book Thief not rocking my boat, people in my book group loved it, I liked All the Light We Cannot See much more.
Didn’t manage to finish it.
Archer’s voice. I had really high hopes from it but didn’t like it. At all.
The Alchemist.
yes, me too!
@Pauline It made no sense to me. Very simple and boring. Anticipated a different story. I’m into John Sandford, Harlan Coben.
That’s what I didn’t like as well. It was too simple. I was definitely expecting something more profound!
Girl interrupted
Sleep my darlings
A professors Rage
Go Set a Watchman
Da Vinci Code
Yep. Glad I read it so I can discuss it, but not a great read as touted.
I enjoyed Angels and Demons much more.
The girl on the train
Definitely not a good read!
Fifty Shades
Girl on the train
Gone Girl
Girl on a train, fifty shades, the hunger games, little fires everywhere.
