Yes! The first few Narnia books, also The Three Musceteers and Gullivers Travels and most of the Grimm and the Andersen fairytales. I think I learned to read a bit fairly early because of my frustration with adults who sometimes were deluded enough to act as if they had other obligations besides reading to me.
I remember my dad reading to me some when I was little..nobody else did til I started Kindergarten, and the school librarian read to Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. Then in 4th grade, my teacher started each morning by reading from the Bible..Psalms or Proverbs, without comment, then in 5th and 6th grade, two teachers read chapter books to us. I can still picture it and hear them in my mind. Nobody read a Wrinkle in Time better than Mrs. Schoech..nobody.
Over the years I have thought about this a lot but I don’t remember. My mom and I were the big readers in the house so it is hard for me to think she didn’t. The two of us always had books we were reading and I think I often read books when I should have been doing my homework. I was one of those under the cover, late at night, flashlight readers.
My mom was very sick when I was 2 and was in bed for weeks at a time. We didn’t own a t.v. so we read all the time. I could read on my own before I turned 3! My ex’s mom was a teacher yet she NEVER read to her kids. When our first child was born I told him that we would take turns reading to her and he tried to weasel out of it by telling me his mom never read to them and he turned out just fine (little did he know that he really didn’t turn out well at all).
My mil was a teacher, was just shy of a doctorate..she NEVER read to my husband and his sister. She also told us repeatedly as we were raising our family, “Ya’ll have TOO many books!” She was teaching third graders when she said this..My husband is an avid reader despite his upbringing, not because of it. His sister is not a reader at all.
Nope. My parents workes very hard during my childhood and when I was old enough, I read the Grimm’s fairytales to my little sister because I thought it is important for a child to be read to.
No, but my father told me stories about a gnome called Pimmetje in a forest. Every night he went further with the story. He made this story in his mind.
Yes, my primary teacher read to us before going home time and I remember my dad reading to us, things like the Wind in the Willows and Lorna Doone, on a Sunday afternoon. He preferred WITW because he could do the voices!
Not a lot. My dad raised me as a single dad, he could not read very well. But as soon as I could read, he made me read to him a lot. He went out and bought me huge bookcases and went to auctions to buy boxes of books.
Yes. A lot. Stories, poetry, Shakespeare quotes. When other kids were being read “The night before Christmas”, My dad read ” A Christmas Carol” to us. He also read Poe’s ” The Raven” and The Telltale Heart”. I learned to love books very early.
Not that I remember but then it wasn’t the done thing in the Seventies in England, but instead I was encouraged to read to myself anything and everything and I grew up surrounded by books and frequent trips to the library so I don’t think I have missed out but it could explain my impatience with audio books!!??
Not really. Only on special occasions. My mom read constantly though and I learned how to read around 3 from my older sister so I used to sit with my mom and read her books over her shoulder.
Every day! My paternal grandmother read to me, first rhymes, then stories. In Bengali, our mother tongue. I started reading pretty early so she was soon free to read books of her own choice ?
Yes. Till I was around 4 years old and then I went to the library with my mom and little sister and then I wanted to read on my own. Because the books my mom was reading to my sister I already knew and I wanted new stories…
I will forever have to thank my mom for reading to me, and starting me on books from a really young age. I’ll always remember reading PiggyPie, Stone Soup, Junie B. Jones, The Magic Fish, and Amelia Bedilaia.
I was read to until the age of 19 in order to help take my mind off of the many surgeries I had to have on my legs, back, and feet. When you are born with CP, you don’t really have a chance to play outside because of the wheelchair. I thus retreated into books and writing. My PCA nurse who came to the house to take care of me read the DRAGONLANCE CHRONICLES trilogy, and changed his voice for all the dialogue, never using the words “he said” or “she replied.” It changed my life and guided me to become a novelist.
Starting next month, I am going to start reading books to my aunt’s first grade class.
No, but when I learned to read, I was unstoppable. I read everything I could get my hands on. I kind of still do lol, just a little more selective now.
Yes, we read to all ten kids from birth on til they were teens. I didn’t just take them to the library, I made sure my kids were on first name basis with the librarians..
See, I was pregnant so much, that the younger kids got that treatment too.. as I read aloud to the older ones. Not just me.. their daddy sometimes read aloud too. He liked particularly to read by kerosene lantern during the holiday season..
Yes and that’s where my love of reading came from. I remember my step mum reading Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire to me and I would read ahead a few chapters after she’d gone back downstairs she caught me when she came up to bed and saw my light on reading and from then on I wasn’t read to I was about 6 ?
No, I read more books than I did talk. I was home schooled and wasn’t allowed out of my room. I love books because they used to be my escape from my world, now they are a good friend that greets me when I open it.
My mom said she read to me before I was born. Then both my mom & my granny read to me. I learned how to read when I was 3 because I was surrounded by reading & a love for books. My dad couldn’t read, so I read to him instead.

I was read to until the age of 19 in order to help take my mind off of the many surgeries I had to have on my legs, back, and feet. Yes, all the time. Sometimes my dad would “sing” us the book. Such great memories!
There are some children’s books that are nearly impossible NOT to sing..Rosie and and the Rustlers by Roy Gerrard. I would TRY..but invariably found myself reading it like it was a song. Super cute book.https://www.amazon.com/Rosie-Rustlers-Sunburst-Book-Gerrard/dp/0374463395/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537387001&sr=8-1&keywords=rosie+and+the+rustlers
