The Greeks believed in catharsis – the purging of emotions through art which would allow the viewer to be renewed or liberated from stress. (See Aristotle’s Poetics). When written well, a dramatic or tragic book makes the readers feel the emotions of the characters and emerge “purified” or less involved in petty troubles.
Ok thanks I can handle heartbreaking and I’m in a WWII theme lately I’ve read All the Light We Cannot See, The Book Thief, and The ZooKeepers Wife, I really loved all 3!
@Bonnie oh then you have to read Nightingale!!! My fav. But also right there is Lilac Girls and Beneath A Scarlet Sky. I loved All The Light and just watched The Zoo Keepers Watch. Book Thief is on my soon to be read list.
@Caitlyn I know what you mean. I was heartbroken too. Still think about that book often! I will read it again and can’t wait for the movie! But when I finished it I literally felt like I had a hang over..
Wt is it about?
Ww2! It’s two sisters story!
I’m a 62 year old man and I cried.
I had to take a break from reading I was so upset!! I think knowing that these things really happened to real people is what makes it so unbearable
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
It was too much for me…
I am really enjoying it. It is just heartbreaking at times though. I’m praying for a happy ending ??
Agreed … what a wonderful book.
I’ve just finished it, it was a great read ❤️?

& dehydrated from the crying!!!!!!?
Great book. One of my favorites. And, yes, it’s a real heart-breaker.
I had to read a light, cozy mystery afterwards. However, it’s in my top five best books EVER.
I loved it. I think of it often.
After I finished it, I declared no more holocaust books for a while. It’s been 2 years and I still can’t.
Thanks for the tip I’ve been eyeing it for a while.
It’s an excellent book
Isn’t that a wonderful story of bravery and LOVE!!!!?
It is and to think there were people who really did the things the sisters did!
Anyone who loved this book should read Beneath A Scarlet Sky and Lilac Girls.. both so good too!
Great book
Loved it too!!?
If you love Nightingale try Guernsey literary potato peel society and Sarah’s key same topic wonderful books as well
Is it very graphic? Like torture and stuff, those books really upset me
No, not graphic really at all. More heartbreaking
And inspiring considering what these women did. They are based on real people who did extraordinary things to help rescue people from the Germans
I haven’t really gotten to inspiring yet. I’m still in heartbroken ?? but I still have 1/3 of the book left!!
