The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Am I the only one out of the 2 million who have bought a copy who is finding it boring?!

I found it boring too. You are not alone!
Ah good! I was just expecting so much more…
Yep, me too but just found it overrated ?
@Claire WAY!
Me too! ?
Not my favourite one of his
I just got it from the second hand shop, it’s just thin so I’ll give it a whirl, but I have heard very mixed reviews!
Nope. BORING!
Best. Book. Ever.
That’s what I was expecting!
Agreed! Love it! I’ve read it a dozen times
I loved it!
At least I know I’m not the only one ?
@Rebecca was just asking about one of his books x
Yup also found it boring. Gave up on trying to find the ‘deeper meaning’. Yawn
It didn’t do it for me either
I couldn’t get into it
I HATE Coelho with a passion. His spoon fed pseudo psycho/philosophy makes me gag. ???
I’ve never read it – I was afraid it would be-
Basically he went round the houses looking for something only to realise it was there where he started . End of story
Don’t bother if you haven’t yet !
This is the whole point of his story,
People go round miles looking for
Some meaning in their lives, to find
It was at home all the time !!
It takes some folk a lifetime to realise this, the grass isn’t always greener 🙂
@Elizabeth yes so true but most of us learn the lesson the hard way !
I loved it !
I loved it you have no romantic soul 😉
I don’t have a Roman tick ?? I’m glad there are books for us all, but god do I detest Coelho. His stuff and Eat Pray Love ?
And that Japanese author. Forget his name…such nonsense.
@Colette who? What book?
I love romance I just didn’t find it here !
No I absolutely hated it!
I found it boring too and gave up
Loved it
I read it when I was part of a book club and I must say I enjoyed it!
I tried the audio…and I’m finding it difficult to stop from thinking if I left the iron on at home. I just can’t focus on It….so no @Debi (in my Michel Jackson voice) you are not alone
Love the MJ reference
Awful
Not tried, Waterstones here I come!
Don’t bother!!
it was a little boring at the beginning and not one of my favorites.
Loved it!!
It’s my least favorite book haha. But I had to read it because it’s my mom’s favorite. She read it in Portuguese though. Maybe lots of it was lost in translation.
I hated it!
I didn’t enjoy it.
I couldn’t get into it so stopped reading it
No. I could not finish it!
I just finished I and it was so hard! I was highly disappointed
I found it entertaining as a novel. Simple, easy to read.
I think a lot of the hype sorrounding him/his philosophy detracts from jis books. I don’t see them as anything with deep hidden moral lessons. They’re just books.
Loved loved loved it!!!
Really boring!
My goodreads review from last year: I know that everyone loves this book. People told me it was ridiculous that I hadn’t read it yet. So I read it. I’m not that impressed. Parts of the story were interesting but the whole thing was so heavy handed with the morals and messages, which detracted from getting lost in the story. The story was never allowed to speak for itself, its lessons and teachings were explictly stated, which I found irritating and sort of condescending. In addition there WAS a non explicitly stated message, that men are to chase their dreams and they can expect their women to wait patiently because women’s only dreams ARE their men. Disturbing.
Welcome home, Becca – much like Elaine in Seinfeld when she had to pretend to like The English Patient- it’s lonely out there when people think you’re bonkers not to like a specific book …. and here most of us seem to truly have strong feelings against it. ??❤️
Exactly that!
Exactly which? Lol
@Becca exactly your review!
Lol. Yay! I’m not alone!!!
Yes Becca, totally agree. Pretty outdated, disturbing stuff
Boring
I didn’t get any of his books. Tried soooo hard too
I didn’t like it either
I loved it. But I was 15 when I read it.
Just read the sample and was planning to buy……don’t think I’ll bother now ?
honestly I hated it lol it was so boring
I loved it, took me places in my mind, found it as good as doing yoga.
I have never enjoyed yoga either!
Sounds like it’s marmite. I read it and thought it was OK. I read his other book Veronica decides to die and found that more interesting.
I didn’t hate or love it, just found it a bit mehhh
I loved it but read it about 10 years ago.
Same!!! I really don’t get it!!!! Find it painfully boring – didn’t finish it! So don’t feel bad x
I had two copies and still haven’t read it
Couldn’t get into it
I enjoyed many of his books, but I just couldn’t get into The Alchemist
Load of crap!! Xx
Ah, I loved it. But then, I love lots of stuff!
I read it years ago and enjoyed it.
I thought it was okay.
Yes, totally over rated!! I’ve now read 5 of his books (why do book groups always want to read him??!) and I’m really not seeing what makes him so popular.
Yes, I guess you are. Ha ha.
To each his own. I frickin loved it….my daughter did not.
its either the most brilliant novel ever or for individuals with an intelectual development disorder , I am uncertain ?Sound of one hand clapping ?
I put Murakami in the same category…that dumb Wind Up Bird shit. What the? For wannabe pseudo intellectuals, lol.
No thought it was only ok
I loved it and all his books
Think Jo Jo Moyes is female.
Thread is about paulo coelho..xx
Oops thought it was the me before ypu thread sorry
Thats ok!
Trash literature. I am from Brazil. Please, read Rubem Fonseca, instead. He was also translated. Or Graciliano Ramos or Jorge amado. Or Clarice Lispector. My suggestions. ?
Thank you I will look them up
I could not tolerate the book and can’t figure out for the life of me what anybody likes about it! lol
Yes
