Soo I just finished fifty shades of grey and I really don’t know how to feel about it…

Soo I just finished fifty shades of grey and I really don’t know how to feel about it…
I couldn’t get past the first few pages, it went to the charity shop/thrift store!
Yeah I really felt like I just pushed myself thru it
Awful book
I have chosen not to start the book and I know exactly how I feel about that lol.
Me too
To be the odd one out… I liked the story- I didn’t like parts of it- but I did enjoy the love story.
I’m not that picky apparently about stuff lots of people disliked it for, I never expected it to be accurate for the bdsm lifestyle – it’s a novel not a ‘how to’ manual.
I’ve since reread it- considering the likeness to Twilight (as I had never realised it was fan fiction), I found this an interesting read seeing it differently again.
You’re not the only one, I enjoyed the underlining love story I thought it was pretty sweet. I just think it’s a book people love to hate, but I’ve said several times it got millions of people who don’t normally read reading and that’s not a bad thing.
@Donna absolutely!!! And a few babies were produced on it as well from what I heard!!!
Same.
Me too. I skipped all the parts everyone was raving about. But fell in love with the characters and I’ve reread it as well.
@Michele I agree…. I think people often underestimate family- I loved that side of it too… and comparing those to Twilight was quite an eye opener!
@Carmel same here. I loved Twilight too lol
@Michele shhhh… we are not allowed to admit these things!!
I enjoyed the books and the movies.
I was okay with it, but it was a little..uncomfortable. I’m currently reading Carrie’s Story, which came a long years before 50 Shades, and I was hoping it would be better. It’s not. Maybe the genre isn’t for me ??♀️
Never read the book and tried to watch the movie and didnt get 5 minutes in to it and laughed cause I thought grey was meant to be hot ? couldn’t stop laughing cause he wasn’t attractive at all but that’s just me
For me it wasn’t the content, it was poorly written and I couldn’t get over that.
I’ve thought about reading it because I’ve seen that there’s a series written from his side but dont know if I actually want to read it if that makes sense ?
I think he’s super cute!
After hearing all the girls in my year saying he was so hot/sexy I was expecting something like Jason momoa ?
Thank you everyone for all the feedback!!
He is hot!
Hi ladies
I have read 50 shades and I found it lovely how I see it is open your mind before you start to read it yes it can make you feel uncomfortable at point out think of it this way she is a young women that has always been in love with tom hardy and was waiting for her prince to come along she wasn’t expecting any of what was to come but in the end it’s nothing like that she’s in love she has changed a man that was scared from his childhood and basically saved him from let’s say depression and that was his way of letting his anger out.. I hope I make some kind of sense in this lol I terrible at describing things lol ?
I read all three books when I was in the hospital in 2012 and the nurses were into it and my physio too, it was erotic and different then, I did get a bit hot and bothered….enjoyed them though lol
I read them because of the hype at the time but thought they were awful
I loved the books. Yes there’s a domination side that can be quiet cheeky ( I enjoyed coz reading bout sex doesn’t bother me in the least) the actual love story between the too and how Christian softens and reveals his actual self is quiet sweet. 50 shades is not popular on here or the ppl that like it daren’t say but had a huge populace world wide. I’m a fan and not ashamed to say xx
A really badly written book never finished it
I agree. I couldn’t get past the awful writing
@Yolande me either. Felt like it was written for teenagers ( young teens at that. Not the content but the style and grammar used) thought it was a crock of shite and definitely didn’t deserve the hype.
I am one of the few that loved the books. So far I read all five of them ( also the ones from Christian’s perspective) . I enjoyed the love story and most of the times skipped the sex parts. I was more interested in their love story. But If I have to choose I rather stay with GREY AND DARKER Christian’s side of the story.
I thought it was pretty lame really. Seems like it was just written for shock value. Just felt insubstantial to me.
On the basis of her recent releases I wouldn’t read any of her subsequent literature either!
Badly written book. I read it a few years after all the furore when it first came out. Couldn’t understand its success at all.
It certainly wasn’t the most well written book, but I’m more concerned by the reviews and comments about the book being a “love story” or a “life style”. It is essentially a story about an abusive relationship, and all the glamourising and excusing of the characters behaviour doesnt change that.
I don’t doubt that it’s reviews would be very different had Mr Grey been unattractive.
I was going to say the same thing. A contract doesn’t excuse an abusive relationship. Read the books, found them poorly written and disturbing. Didn’t watch the movies because they chose actors that didn’t match my imaginations image. Also didn’t want to watch an abusive relationship on screen.
Around 40 years ago I read Anais Nin who writes erotica. I don’t know if I would like it now but I did then
It isn’t a love story. It’s a story of a powerful man who manipulates a younger, naive woman. It’s been said a lot, but this remains true: if he wasn’t portrayed as being rich and incredibly handsome no one would buy it being a love story. A story about coercive control isn’t something I’d be keen in my daughter mistaking for true love.
Also, the writing is shockingly bad. Like at the level of a free book from Kindle that hasn’t graced anyone else’s desk but the author’s.
some ppl like it some ppl hate it,i personally liked it ?
People either like it or hate it. Personally I liked the books but didn’t like the movie. Probably only watched the first movie and maybe snippets of the 2nd movie. There was a lot of hype over who the actors would be and I for one didn’t like the actor who played Christian Grey.
i didn’t like the film either,i don’t think they picked the right cast
I saw movie #1 while at a mums and bubs movie morning. It felt very wrong having so many babies breast fed- mine included while sex scenes etc were playing!!! ???
I ve not watched the movie and don’t intend to. There’s a lot of emotions and story that can’t b adapted to the big screen. I agree it’s a marmite book u like it or hate it but most people that have it haven’t even finished the 1st book so don’t get to see how the characters develop xx
I have read them all, just so I could give a review of the complete story.
They didn’t pick the right people for the movies. I loved the books but didn’t like the movies.
Loved the whole series! Haven’t really cared for the movies but watched them each once just to say I did…
I don’t think it can be portrayed properly on screen. It’s so much more in the books. You get to see what the characters think and feel xx
they where ok . not big on the movies
I read them but I didn’t really like them ??♀️
At least you finished it.
It’s marmite
I liked the story. I got tired of the sex really quick.
I mean he literally rapes her in the book, it’s not a romantic love story. And I’m one kinky girl. Lol
I really liked the series, still have to read Darker though! This series actually refuelled my love for reading. I also didn’t care for the movies.
Such a poorly written book. Shock value for sure.
Holy cow! ?
Dreadful.
I cannot understand how this drivel became a success. I hated it.
I think I’m one of the few people who liked them. I only read the three original ones though. The rest I thought was overkill.
No. A lot of people liked them. I saw women sitting in their cars at lunchtime reading them. That’s why I read them. I was wrong to follow the crowd. Lol
Once upon a time no one would admit to liking them.
Well you’re about 10 years late to the party ? ?
Which part has you perplexed? The awful writing, the superficial characters, the grammatical errors, the misogynistic plot line, the erroneous representation of the BDSM community, or the laughable sex scenes? ?
I always skimmed over the sex scenes and couldn’t even get into book 3.
Now I know why I didn’t bother reading them!
After book one I wanted to take an acid bath. No way was I going to read more. Then a client sent me the whole series. So I tried to read book two but just couldn’t.
@Margaret I remember book two was really hard to push through but I thought maybe I was just being ridiculous since it’s such a popular series. There was no way I could get through book 3. I cut my losses. The movies are worse than the book.
All of that! It’s sad that it drew so many people who were not really readers. Too bad that their only reading experience was this garbage.
I thought the writing was dreadful… a shame as could’ve been so good!
I heard so much about it when it first came out that I decided not to read them.
Me too ! If it’s as badly written as has been said I’ve no desire to read it, that’s without factoring in the sex scenes.
This is funny and gives you a taste of it… http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/fifty-shades-of-grey/feature/a820703/worst-50-shades-darker-quotes/
@Louise thanks. Too funny!!
It was not badly written.
I don’t know, but those quote are cringe inducing! 😮
I like the plot in the most part but I find it very poorly written
I made it through the first book and half of the second. They were awful. I could not believe how bad the writing was and the amount of grammatical errors were insane.
Horny ? ??
It gets so much better. I thought the 1st book was great, just wait until the 2nd and 3rd book! ❤️
I got it because I had a coupon for a free book when I first got my kindle. I’m glad I didn’t pay for it. I couldn’t get through the first book. I kept waiting for a plot, but there was no development. I go halfway through and had to stop.
I personally enjoyed the book series.. I like to think about the fact that she saved him from a dark past and she stood in and took all his pain so he didnt have to endure it…he was hurting from what he had gone through and his way of letting it out was through BDSM. He needed his submissive and she needed him otherwise she wouldnt have came back for him. She trusted him and let him do what he needed to do in order to get his anger and depression out. He also listened after she left. They created rules (so to speak). As should any person who is in a relationship kinky or not. To me it was a beautiful relationship and a wonderful plot. Yes grammer and other mistakes were made but if you look past that ignore the reviews… reviews will only point out things that you may have not noticed and focus on the connection the way he captured his emotions and her innocence. Its really a great book. But thats my opinion im not great at describing it but i liked it.
I didn’t see any of the things you mention in the books. To me it was a Harlequin romance with bits of juvenile sexual fantasy interspersed. There is nothing noble in sacrificing yourself to satisfy the unreasonable desires of your partner. The idea of it sets progress in women’s rights back by centuries.
well I didnt comment my opinion to argue… but ive been in relationships similar so reading the books gave me an insight most dont have….i also have a extremely open mind and dont discredit someones writing based off of things that go on all the time… he wrote a book based around BDSM and in a society where your told thats wrong and not healthy to me it was brave and i admire the writing because of it…
Kimberly Marie Williams I have been a human sexuality instructor at college level for years. I’m not at all surprised or offended by BDSM. My objections to the books are based on poor writing and the treatment of the female character.
@Neva I think saying that it put women’s rights back centuries is an overstatement. To me through the books it is Anna who is calling the shots in the relationship and he changes more for her than she does for him.
the treatment is something she also encouraged because she agreed to follow in his process
i agreed grammer and bad writing was in there but i look past it… all authors make writing mistakes but i choose to look at the bigger picture instead of focusing on the small details
I didnt even make it through the first book. I tried and just couldn’t get into it
Haters gonna hate! She made a fortune on not only the books but the movies. Somebody liked it! ?
If you really want to read pornography directed at women, try Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty series. I’m a worldly human sexuality instructor and they surprised me. I think they are what 50 Shades wants to be.
Agree with Neva. Anne Rice rules
I loved them! The first one was definitely hard for me to get into but I stuck it out and I ended up loving them. I loved the ending of the series! The movies, in my opinion, definitely didn’t stand up to the books but not many movies do, in my opinion!
I read all three. By the third one I was done. Of course that was when the third movie was coming out. So i was waiting on certain aspects to happen in the book. So it kinda to the fun of reading out of it. I did enjoy reading them though. To each their own.
She’s not a very good writer , next 2 books don’t get much better . Anne Rice writes erotica , I recommend her over these lame books
I’d recommend a lot of authors over these lame books, I could not read a whole chapter. I finally settle for the cliff notes and watching YouTube videos of people read the most “erotic scenes” I was not impressed but it was good for a laugh. I fell asleep on the movie, twice.
I got about halfway through listening to book 1 before the constant emails drove me nuts and I gave up.
Read all three just to see what all the hype was. Didn’t really care for them. Wasnt horrible and was able to read them but didn’t really get into them like I do with good books! 🙂
I wouldn’t bother thinking too much about it if I were you! I enjoyed the first one as a novelty, but that was about it!
I disliked it, it felt very mary sue but then again it originated as twilight fanfic so…..
Ya it’s a friggin quandry. Well written but so dark. More like 50 shades of darkness.
I don’t think I’m a prude by any means but after awhile I was like…OK we get it. ?
If I could get back the time, I wasted reading these silly books.
Corney
One of my favorite books!
I couldn’t even get through the first book. I had issues with the writing. The film however wasn’t that bad.
I read it and felt empty. Nothing was gained from reading it.
Horrible written. Couldn’t get through the first one.
