It was accurate historically…those things happened. therefore it was disturbing to say the least. since my husband and his sister were both illegally adopted around that time…one from Sean crea where Philomena was filmed…i found “Before we were yours”. to be a rather thorough picture of the time. I cannot say I loved it but am very glad I read it.
Yes. I thought it was just average. I expected much better writing and it was only interesting when it was about the kids. Just my opinion. Terrible that it’s based on truth and most of us were unaware of this happening.
I didn’t love it, but I found the overall topic interesting and did some reading about it all afterwards.. I read Orphan Train about the same time, it’s a similar kind of book, but I liked it so much more.
I wasn’t disappointed at the end, i felt it ties things up nicely. I just wish they’d keptmus guessing longer. But it does an excellent job of telling the story of those children/that institution
In defense of the book, I just don’t enjoy stories of children in peril or chaos. Had too much of that in my own childhood! But most of the ladies in our book club liked it.
While I appreciated learning about the adoption scandal, I did not care much for the story otherwise, especially the modern day character. I read it shortly after it came out and was surprised to later see it getting such high ratings. I found it to be just average.
i too was underwhelmed. maybe because i had watched a documentary and was aware… lost any shock value… also.. it was fiction… i woulda been happier with the real horror.
No I loved it.
Loved it
I didn’t like the contemporary character. The book was just average. Orphan 8 on a sort of similar subject was MUCH much better.
I would have given it 2/5 stars.
Me too!
Didn’t like it
Not my favorite
Actually I loved it .
I’ve bought it on Kindle, but haven’t read it yet.
I have it in my TBR pile.

Yes. I felt the history itself should have been enough without the sappy love story

I’m often surprised by the books that get high ratings. I pretty much ignore them now.
I loved it!!!
I agree. I was underwhelmed.
