It was nostalgic and fun to read as a child from the 80s. But it drags in the middle heavily and goes off on wild tangents for a while. Still over all I enjoyed it
I loved it. It has a lot of building in the beginning which is a little slow but overall loved it. And the movie was good but I dont like to think of the movie with the book because then I’m sad. Separate both are good.
I think it’s great for gamers and the nostalgia, but just an OK read otherwise. Pretty predictable and a little heavy on the game details for a non gamer
Loved that book! The book is so much better than the movie though. I mean, the movie was good. But if you read the book first, you might be a bit disappointed on the movie.
Wasn’t a fan of the movie but loved the book. Honestly though, I listened to the audiobook & feel that made all the difference to me personally. I would have dnf’d the physical copy.
I love the book- it was gripping so I had really high expectations for the movie but it wasn’t as good. I liked spotting out the differences while simultaneously hating the differences.
Found some reviews that made me think it wasn’t my thing. I’m not intrigued by much where the hook is nostalgia that doesn’t offer any meaningful critique on such a concept. (I probably sound snobby, which wasn’t my intention.)
I DNFed the book. It felt unbelievable, like someone said above, why would the youth be SO obsessed with old pop culture? I can understand to a degree but it mostly felt like the author flexing their vast knowledge of pop culture. There was a lot of stuff that was just frankly boring to read. Possibly less boring if you have a similar depth of knowledge to the author. But the huge amount of detail made you feel quite distanced from the characters as a whole. I didn’t care enough about them to keep reading through the heavy bits.
The film was much better IMO. It wasn’t so heavy. It kept the feel of the book, but it wasn’t unbelievable, there was a lot of updated references too. Definitely worth a watch.
It was interesting. Sometimes, it’s nice to read about a future that sucks worse than ours does. Also, the majority of the book takes place in an awesome video game that provides an escape from reality for the characters and readers.
Loved it! But I was born in the 80’s so it was just lots of happy childhood references. But I gave it to my 25 yr old friend who loved it as well. Give it a go!
I loved both the book and the movie. The book was heavy on 80’s nostalgia which, being a 90’s baby, was sometimes lost on me. BUT… the overall plot of the book was done well, so I missed very little and was able to fully understand what was going on despite not getting a pop culture reference. And while I recommend the movie also, it is wonderful, in my opinion, you need to consider the book and movie two separate entities. The director took liberties with the 3 challenges. And I’m glad he did. He kept the authenticity of the plot but made it more entertaining for the big screen. The challenges are vastly different, but I believe they have to be, else the movie would have been a bit dull… which just goest to illustrate how masterful the author was to make the challenges in the book riveting!
It was a bit too stretched out . It could have been condensed a bit more , so it was a bit dry and drawn out to me . But you may like it ,that’s just my opinion . I really liked the idea of it , But sometimes ideas just don’t translate well .
Loved it, read it in 2 days and found it fascinating. Maybe it’s also an age thing, I am (not old, don’t say oooold) uuuuhm mature enough to get most of the references and get bitten by nostalgia ?
I did not like it. There’s very little substance. It’s 90% ’80s references.
Loved it
Fantastic book.
I did not enjoy it at all

I have tried VERY hard to read it, but I couldn’t! Too boring!
LOVE IT
i couldn’t understand why youth of the future were into pop culture that existed in our era, wouldn’t they have their own newer fictional content?
❤️❤️❤️❤️

I liked the story, but there was too much info dump for me that didn’t matter to the story. I rated it 3/5 stars on Goodreads.
@Colette I absolutely agree with you
