Like usual I prefer the book. The movie was still good, but I wasn’t a fan of how much different it was from the book. I was hoping for more from the movie.
Have not read the book but I watched the movie last night. Very suspenseful, but gory. Loved it until the end. The end was kinda flat. Not sure how it measures up to the book.
I loved it. The book was excellent. It was written in so much detail I felt like I was in the story. The movie on Netflix was great too. I recommend both!!
For some reason, I think I would be ok with it via book. Almost like The Road – you never find out WHAT caused the end of the world but somehow it’s not entirely important. But in the movie I kept waiting to see what they were, to see how they did what they did
Actually for one of his films The Happening was pretty good. It was Mother Nature fighting back at us for destroying the world. Every time the wind blew through the trees we would be compelled to commit suicide. Quite good.
Yes!! Why were the clinically insane immune? Why was it so beautiful? How did the birds know? What about the other animals? And how the hell did those damn birds survive the boat capsizing anyway!?!
@Robyn I haven’t and I wanted to but I actually heard a lot of folks in here who didn’t like it! There was a thread about it when previews for the movie first came out. I’ll give it a chance
@Jill same here ! Watched half of the movie last night and no real desire to be on the edge of my seat tonight. Will watch in broad daylight tomorrow !!!
I started watching it, got 30 minutes into it, but duties called. I am not sure, when I’ve watched the entire thing, that I will be able to say the movie was fun, but it certainly is intense. I don’t know if I will read the book.
I read the book awhile ago. I can’t remember did the book have the story of them in the house? I could have sworn it took place only in the boat on the water.
PLEASE WHEN YOU REVIEW A BOOK THAT OTHERS STILL HAVE NOT READ CAN YOU PLEASE PUT **THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS** SO ITS NOT SPOILT FOR OTHERS. THANK YOU
Does the book provide more of a plot? Like, was there some kind of deeper meaning to why the evil entity can only attack those who see ? I felt like the movie could have done a lot more!
Nadine Drover nope. The book didn’t give any of those kind of details. I think the author left that for the reader to decide… though there were theories
I listened to the book and really enjoyed it. Ending was open for a second book so hoping author will write it. Not watched movie yet coz forgot it was on. Will watch it later, thanks for the reminder, lol.
Just read The Children’s Act and saw the film. Both wonderful the acting in the film is 5 star for each actor. Ian McEwan even wrote the screen play of his book and changed the ending to make it flow better on screen.
I enjoyed tbe fact that it was different to many films at the mo. Couldn’t predict what would happen. I was particularly saddened by the fact that Sandra Bollock called the children, “Boy” and “Girl”. Really drove home how impersonal and bleak their lives were.
Loved the book and the movie. I didn’t like some of the changes that were made, like boy and girl calling her Mallory in the movie. ? I felt that it took away the importance of why they didn’t have names yet and leaves you feeling like Mallory doesn’t love them or feel attached to them, when in fact it’s the opposite. She loves them so much she fears them being taken away.
I did like the scene in the woods, the boat trip is a long one and while Mallory would have never ever have stopped in the middle of her journey with the children, it kept things entertaining for the screen.
I was 100% disappointed in this book. It reminded me of The Happening when I started it but was interested to hear it was creatures but they never get described so I think it makes it a lot less scary. Like I understand using your imagination, but there wasnt even a hint to send you on any direction. I don’t know that I would even recommend it. I really thought I’d enjoy it…..sad.
Just finished watching it 5 minutes ago and loved it!!

My thought is l need to read this book. I have read lots of good reviews about this book.
Both are awesome.
I just wanna know what those things were. Doesnt explains in movie
No one knows. It’s not in the book at all.
For some reason, I think I would be ok with it via book. Almost like The Road – you never find out WHAT caused the end of the world but somehow it’s not entirely important. But in the movie I kept waiting to see what they were, to see how they did what they did
Kinda reminded me of the movie the happening
Oh god the happening. I never even saw it but it made me angry lol. The trees?? Really??
Oh but it was a M. Night Shyamalan movie. Which explains a lot.
Actually for one of his films The Happening was pretty good. It was Mother Nature fighting back at us for destroying the world. Every time the wind blew through the trees we would be compelled to commit suicide. Quite good.
I watched the movie last night and hope there’s more explanation in the book. A lot of unanswered questions…..
Not gonna lie, was pretty pissed they never revealed what the things were or how they managed to get folks to off themselves.
Or the reason some could walk around without blindfolds albeit topping others off.
Yes!! Why were the clinically insane immune? Why was it so beautiful? How did the birds know? What about the other animals? And how the hell did those damn birds survive the boat capsizing anyway!?!
How did she get the boat from the house to the water???? ?
How did she map out the route with string without knowing for sure it was the correct route and not just 35 laps around the house?
so many questions so few answers.
You HAVE to suspend belief on this one.
Have you guys read the book? The movie was great but a lot more is explained in the book xx
@Robyn I haven’t and I wanted to but I actually heard a lot of folks in here who didn’t like it! There was a thread about it when previews for the movie first came out. I’ll give it a chance
@Chelsea ah really? I thought it was brilliant
@Chelsea Yes that is the most important question! Lol
I haven’t read the book yet but I thought he movie was good, I want to read the book now though.
Was disappointed in the inconclusive ending to a long movie
Halfway. Trying to finish tonight to watch the movie lol
@Jill same here ! Watched half of the movie last night and no real desire to be on the edge of my seat tonight. Will watch in broad daylight tomorrow !!!
I did not know there was a book but we watched the movie last night and really liked it!
when i first read this i thought you were commanding me to read the book. oops. lol
@Jason sorry, I phrase things when writing as though I’m saying them.
no worries. i do the same.
just wanted to comment something so i can follow instead of a mere “F”
nothing wrong with a bit of fun.
I thought the movie was good, eerie…. The ending scene made me feel like they stole it from LOST ?
Exactly what I thought ?
I started watching it, got 30 minutes into it, but duties called. I am not sure, when I’ve watched the entire thing, that I will be able to say the movie was fun, but it certainly is intense. I don’t know if I will read the book.
So the movie and the book good?
Ummmmmmm was missing so much from the book so I didn’t like it
The book is always better for me
So should I read the book first then movie
@Sam I agree, it was missing way too much. The book is always better.
@Joyce Absolutely, read the book 🙂 then the movie.
It really did miss heaps
I read the book awhile ago. I can’t remember did the book have the story of them in the house? I could have sworn it took place only in the boat on the water.
@Ella It did yeah, but they added characters and the way she gets to the house is different in the book 🙂
@Sam thank you for clearing that up. It was driving me crazy. Lol
Thanks I’ll read the book
@Joyce You’re welcome 🙂 glad I could help
Have a Happy Holiday
We watched the movie last night and officially creeped out.. I didn’t know it was based off a book. Now I need to look into this.
PLEASE WHEN YOU REVIEW A BOOK THAT OTHERS STILL HAVE NOT READ CAN YOU PLEASE PUT **THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS** SO ITS NOT SPOILT FOR OTHERS. THANK YOU
Didn’t read it but LOVED the movie.
Watched the movie. Just ordered the book. I liked the film but still a little confused what they saw…any clues? Aliens..
Nobody knows, the book never says what they are or how they do what they do. Still a brilliant book though.
@Terence I will still read the book. Thanks.
Just watched the movie. Great gosh almighty. Lots thrills
Watched the film last night and enjoyed it. Lots of unanswered questions, agreed.
Book was way better! They left out so much and changed so much. Highly recommend reading book first
I’ve literally just finished watching the movie too ! . Loved it . Need to read the book now
Read it and watch movie. It’s worth your time
I loved the book and I enjoyed the movie
Ooh I just finished watching this an hour ago. Had never heard of it before that. I really liked it.
I love this book!! I had no idea a movie was made
Loved it
Does the book provide more of a plot? Like, was there some kind of deeper meaning to why the evil entity can only attack those who see ? I felt like the movie could have done a lot more!
Nadine Drover nope. The book didn’t give any of those kind of details. I think the author left that for the reader to decide… though there were theories
i haven’t watched the movie yet, but I think by leaving certain details out of the book made it more scary for me
Read the book a few months ago. Watching the movie now…?
We are watching it right now too.
Isn’t it weird that so
Many of us have just watched / are watching the movie right now ! #greatminds
Because it just came on Netflix
ah we are new to Netflix and just happened upon it by chance
Both book and movie were great! Yes, big differences in the movie adaption but it holds its own. Very pleased.
Hated the book. Nothing happens except rowing every other chapter. I was bored stiff
same with the movie, I thought it was total garbage.
I haven’t read the book but I watched movie yesterday. It was good but you are left with a load of unanswered questions – who, what and why
And Where?
@Lisa lol unfortunately, I think the movie answered more of those questions than the book.
We just finished watching the movie. Credits roll and my husband asks “Did you know it’s based on a true story?” ?
I just started the book and I’m watching the movie, interesting.
I got the book for $2 and i refuse to watch it before i read the book.
I started the book first , because there is a big difference in the beginning. Going to finish the book first.
But the movie looks good also.
The movie confused me
@Kayla why?
@Stephanie idk just did.
I listened to the book and really enjoyed it. Ending was open for a second book so hoping author will write it. Not watched movie yet coz forgot it was on. Will watch it later, thanks for the reminder, lol.
Watched it last night did not think much of it at all
Loved it!!! Loved the book too.

Was going to buy bird box but watched film. Glad not got book not impressed x

Had no idea was based on a book but loved the movie
Reading it now, like it. Looking forward to watching the movie.
Loved the movie!!
I loved the book. I thought it was so original, and imaginative. I won’t see the movie. I’m too afraid it would ruin the book for me.
Loved book. Didn’t like changes in the movie
What Author?
@Wendy , Josh Malerman.
I just watched the movie and what a disappointment, total garbage, now I don’t even want to read the book 🙁
@Lisa I have to read after watching. So far I like the book better….give it a try.
Loved the book and the movie. I didn’t like some of the changes that were made, like boy and girl calling her Mallory in the movie. ? Just finished this in under 2 days been a while since a book had gripped me that much. Real page turner. Full of suspense
I was 100% disappointed in this book. Like I understand using your imagination, but there wasnt even a hint to send you on any direction. I don’t know that I would even recommend it. I really thought I’d enjoy it…..sad.
Reading the book now. Watched the movie last week. So far the book is much better. I just want to know what they are seeing…..
@Thresa ah now there’s the thing. Won’t spoil it but ?
