Looking to discuss the greatest literary novel written in the english language. To Kill A Mockingbird
Well, I read To Kill a Mockingbird years ago in high school. I enjoyed it but it didn’t leave as strong an impression on me as some other books we read. I started rereading To Kill a Mockingbird yesterday and finished about half the novel. WOW, I loved it. I completely relate with Scout and her experiences in school and with teachers. It’s interesting to me how differently we see books at different times in our life. I should finish it up tomorrow.
What did you like best in To Kill a Mockingbird?
What would you like to talk about-I’m all ears! Hit me with a thought….
Anything about the book. Love it so much
I recently purchased a little alcohol from a small shop and they asked if I wanted a paper bag to put it in separate from my other purchases. I told them coca-cola goes in the paper bag and we had a good laugh. =D
Those little bottles of alcohol are.now outlawed in several New England towns because of all the litter they”er causing on the street.
@Kathy It wasn’t a single serving bottle, just a can of beer… applicable to this page not just because of the To Kill A Mockingbird reference, but because I was trying Walt Longmire’s favorite brand of beer; Rainier. ?
It’s been years since I read it and remember bits and pieces. There are a lot of similarities between Scout and Harper Lee, and her friend Dill is based on her childhood friend Truman Capote.
Not sure if it’s the greatest literary novel
It’s always number one on list of favorites.
Joan Noble:
What’s number 2 ? ?
Not sure about that Katy Adams. You?
I’ve not read it yet. However, my husband has just finished reading it and said it was one of the most amazing books he’s read
I read the book after watching the movie. The book gives more info about the children’s relationship with their neighbor and ties it into the trial better. I kept hearing Gregory Peck’s voice as Atticus Finch while I was reading. I’ve read it a few times and always recommend it when someone is looking for a great classic.
One of the few I see accepted as being a great classic in both literature and cinematography.
It’s not a great piece of literature. It’s popular today like so many other things that come and go.
Sincerely a great AMERICAN novel.
For some reason I keep hearing the voice of my cousin as Scout and I am not sure why. Still love it.
Let me ask you all why you believe it is the greatest American novel?
Didn’t say anything about American
@Mona
I would debate greatest novel of all time since it doesn’t present any new ideas.
The fact that we all got different opinions is what makes this world great
@Mona
I love friendly rapport about books.
So do I but to be honest, didn’t know how to argue with your point about new ideas
Lol
So many excellent classics, I don’t know that greatest is possible to name! I think it is always the most recent one I read!
Mona Ali
How do you like Uncle Tom’s Cabin?
That’s a real American classic.
I love Scmoop for great Analysis and always perceptive questions. Here’s one to get us started:
Six-year-olds are cute, but they’re not necessarily the most reliable narrators. How would the novel be different if it were narrated from Jem’s perspective? Atticus’s? Calpurnia’s? Or in the third person?
Because Scout is such an endearing character in the book, it’s hard to think of the novel from another point of view. But it’s fun to speculate.
I think Scout is a good narrator because she is innocent and naive.
Lynne Marcus, that question made me sit back and try and imagine the story being told through anybody else’s perspective. I couldn’t. Like you said yourself, it’s her innocence and naivety which makes her perspective special
Another question:
What’s the effect of having the Finch children call their father by his first name? What does that suggest about their characters? About his? Their relationship? Do you know anyone who calls their parents by their first name? (Do you?)
Yes
@Lynne
No narrator can be 100% reliable if he or she participates in the novel’s action. Because Scout represents a childlike perspective, she narrates with a less impaired and influenced view point in the Southern culture because she has spent less time in a Southern school and less time with peers to learn too many ways to think like her social neighbors with bigoted attitudes. As a result, Harper Lee wants to disport her narrator’s tone by illustrating how counter intuitive she verbally comports her unusual thinking when she encounters a poor, less advantaged classmate, a mentally delayed adult neighbor, and an African American accused of rape. To emphasize her father’s nurturing of Jem and her character, it’s important to show how rare Scout and Jen’s childhood cultivation strike the reading audience.
First, calling their father Atticus resounds with an iconoclastic tone to Southern traditions of child-adult interactions. This can emphasize Atticus’s parenting techniques as a way to emphasize children as equals with their parents when it comes to respect, it shows his absence as a father because of his conviction to defending the poor and racially incommensurate, and it exposes Atticus’s openness with his children to maintain a level, open relationship with his children to cultivate Atticus’s character and the deep respect the children have for their father without a forced respect or a developed resentment for a strict Southern disciplinarian. As a result, it illustrates through implication the father’s sensitivity to the loss of their mother and his strong, secure way to teach his children respect through his actions instead of a forced system of respect taught through the use of “sir,” “ma’am,” “Mr.,” and “Mrs.”. Atticus not only receives respect from his children and the disfranchised neighbors—the poor, the mentally disabled, and the racially unequal minority.
Why do some women call tbeir husbands , “Daddy”?
Kathy Adams, I wish you didn’t ask that! Lol. I find it so weird and creepy
Why? Do you not know anything about Americans and American life?
What do you mean?
Is there something wrong in calling your husband “Big Daddy”?
I thought this was about literary classics but I now see it is not. Have a good day Ms
Mona Ali: Are you an Adult?
Mona Ali:
Why do some men call tbeir wives “Big Mama”?
Literature is very often relevant to both the culture and real life of human beings.
Did you not know that?
Step children often call tjeir step fathers by their first name
