When I was in middle school there was a program called Battle of the Books. There were 12-16 books selected each year and the teams competed on knowledge of the books
see I really LIKE that idea. Rather than just plow through a hundred books or so you have to actually remember stuff about them. Of course, these days I’ve got no hope lol
My kids’ elementary school has Battle of the Books! They compete school-wide then move to the city “championships.” Finally found a sport for my daughter ?
A number of students in our school participate in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. It’s a competitive reading program for 4th-12th grades. They meet weekly to discuss the books they’re required to read (all nominees for the Georgia Children’s Book Awards and the Georgia Peach Awards for Teen Readers. I’ve had several students involved in the program each year and they all love it (and are voracious readers all year — one of my 4th grade girls often reads 4 books simultaneously — two at school, one at home, and whatever Helen Ruffin book she was reading at the time).
As a very slow reader I would never enter such a competition… Anyway I firmly believe that it is always better to enjoy a book at one’s own pace than try to break records… But it’s a matter of taste… Could I read faster I might think differently ?????
I do this, somewhat. I don’t care about how many books I’m reading, but if I think I’m spending too much time on watching TV, or taking too long to finish a book, I will set reading goals. For example, get 1/2 way thru this weekend, or finish this weekend, etc.
Myself, my mother, sister in law and best friend do yearly reading challenges and see who can reach their goal first lol friendly competition to help make sure we find time to read (since that’s what we love) 🙂

I engage in reading competition with myself all the time. it helps me not Get Lazy and get won by TV!

In my experience, majoring in English Lit?? ?
I hope not, it would rob us of the enjoyment of reading.
Agree. It’s like those terrible competitive chef shows. There are some things in life that need to go slow and be savored
Oh, definitely!! It’s called Book Club!!!☺
I joined book battle last month too.
Yes, summer reading programs for kids. I never allowed my kids to participate because to me, reading is, itself, the reward.
Many book clubs
