This is by far the best book I’ve read in a long time, but if you aren’t interested, move on….I just did that with The Silent Patient. Some times, we just don’t see what others see when we read a book!
I feel like I would’ve liked it more if I didn’t hear all the rave reviews of it going in. It took a while for me to get into and I was a bit disappointed at the end but it still was worth reading.
Yes! I only stuck with it because it was a book club pick. It took until about halfway through before I started to get interested. Now it’s one of my favorite books!
I’m reading it right now and at first I was like, if the author writes that something is “as if” something else one more time, I’m going to throw this book in the trash…but then it got good, like I love it and I love Ove.
I’m reading Beartown (same author) and he makes SO MANY comparisons to other things. Fortunately, most of them have made me laugh (i.e. he has a watch the size of a blood pressure cuff). Must be this author’s style.
I got into it in the beginning, became bored in the middle, and then got back into it towards the end. And man I cried. It was good, but it’s not the most exciting read ever. Lol.
I was bored and frustrated with the character for the first half of the book. I kept going based on the recommendations of everyone and I’m glad I did.
I tried about a year ago, didn’t get far & opted to stop & read something else. Seemed like they were trying to hard to develop his character. I may pick it back up someday, given all the awesome reviews on here.
@Kara I’ve been feeling the same way. It’s like, I really want to like his stuff, but..??♀️. I borrowed My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry (mouthful) and I just can’t bring myself to read it. I’m afraid that I’ll be bored.
I found the beginning to be slow and did stop reading but after joining this group and hearing all the great reviews I picked it back up again and finished it. It was good, but not great.
I felt the same way for most of the book… lots of eye rolling and impatience… then suddenly it reveals itself and it’s not the book you thought you were reading at all. It’s now one of my favorites ever.
For me, this was a beautiful book and I loved it all the way through. But. I DID have to settle in. The pace is calm, gentle and reminiscent of a workable life pace – not a pace most of us are used to.
I recommend settling in. I haven’t regretted it for one second.
It does. It was hard for me to get into also.
Keep going!

No
YES!!!! It’s a slow start but the end just gets you!!!! ?
I enjoyed it but did it by audio book.
I’m listening to it right now and hoping it gets better. It’s been talked up so much! But so far…meh.
This is by far the best book I’ve read in a long time, but if you aren’t interested, move on….I just did that with The Silent Patient. Some times, we just don’t see what others see when we read a book!
I loved it so much, but listened to the audiobook the first time.
This was not my favorite Fredrik Bachman book. It was not bad but it did nothing for me.
I felt the same way but plugged along. I am SO glad I did.
I am with you on that one to i am having trouble getting through it also
I was just going to post about this. I find it boring too but I am not that far in.
It is what I consider a “quiet” book. It is almost entirely about the character development, and very little about the events in the story.
I loved that book, but to me it started out slow.
I feel like I would’ve liked it more if I didn’t hear all the rave reviews of it going in. It took a while for me to get into and I was a bit disappointed at the end but it still was worth reading.
Wonderful book!
It gets better. Very good book!
Loved it!!
Overall good story but definitely slow throughout the whole book. It has some redeeming qualities…. but slow
Yes! I only stuck with it because it was a book club pick. It took until about halfway through before I started to get interested. Now it’s one of my favorite books!
it does .. and it’s fabulous !
I had to get through chapter 4 before i loved it!
I DNF
I really enjoyed it and didn’t think I would
One of my most favorite books!
I loved this book, stay with it!
I’m reading it right now and at first I was like, if the author writes that something is “as if” something else one more time, I’m going to throw this book in the trash…but then it got good, like I love it and I love Ove.

Just finished Ove and I’m dead now. My heart exploded ?
I got into it in the beginning, became bored in the middle, and then got back into it towards the end. And man I cried. It was good, but it’s not the most exciting read ever. Lol.
Go ahead – search the group for that book. RAVES.
They’re just setting the stage, be patient ?
I’m also finding it incredibly slow. Probably won’t finish it.
I was bored at first. Stick with it! It is so good.
The beginning 50 plus pages are not the best. It does get better but it is still not my favorite read.
It does. It takes time
Yes! Stick with it! It was a little hard to get into, but it’s one of my all-time favorite books now.
I hated it. Couldn’t finish it but I think i’m in the minority.
Yes! Loved that book!
Yes! Keep going!!
It’s just meh. I finished it but no tears here.
good to know
Same here. I’m 70% and still bored. He’s getting better but I’m still waiting for the good stuff. Seems to be taking a long time.
Laughed and cried. I loved it!
It picks up and becomes your favorite quickly!
YES!! Stick with it!!!
In my top 10
I really loved it but we’re all different. If you know its not your jam, move along.
No
I was bored and frustrated with the character for the first half of the book. I kept going based on the recommendations of everyone and I’m glad I did.
his books have a slow burn, but they are worth it, in my opinion. i always have to read a quick one before and after though!
Yes! The characters stick with you after it’s done too.
I tried about a year ago, didn’t get far & opted to stop & read something else. Seemed like they were trying to hard to develop his character. I may pick it back up someday, given all the awesome reviews on here.
I just don’t like Fredrik Backman’s writing style, and I won’t apologize for that!
No need to apologize! If we all felt the same, the world would be a mighty boring place!
Stick with it! I loved it by the end.
I am listening to it and LOVE it.
@Lisa Isn’t the audiobook fantastic!?
@Lisa I listened it too and it was great. Now I am listening to Beartown ?
Oh my goodness. I just finished the audiobook today and I cried. What a lovely book.
I found the beginning to be slow and did stop reading but after joining this group and hearing all the great reviews I picked it back up again and finished it. It was good, but not great.
Not really
So slow but it did get somewhat better. Not one of my favs.
It’s slow through the entire book….
I gave up on it…just kept waiting and nothing.
I loved it and am glad I stuck with it, but I did put it down for awhile (tax season).
I’m 200+ pages in myself and struggling. I think my expectations were way too high!
No
I loved it. Everyone is different & likes different stuff, but I really liked that story.
I had a really hard getting through it too… and eventually abandoned it. I know so many that loved – but I just couldn’t force myself through anymore…
I hated it
I felt the same way for most of the book… lots of eye rolling and impatience… then suddenly it reveals itself and it’s not the book you thought you were reading at all. It’s now one of my favorites ever.
@Melissa i thought exactly the same
It was a hard one to get into but I liked it.
Yes!
Not really
That was my feeling to- had to give up on it.
I just started it and feel a bit blah…I might skip ahead a few chapters.
You’ll miss out on the character development if you do, and that’s really the whole point of the book.
It definitely gets better. Much. much, MUCH better.
Much better!
It truly does. You will be surprised how your emotions will change. I thought the same thing.
Yes I stopped a few times but finally read it and the end was great!
I was bored at first but stuck with it.
It’s slow, but you’ll love the end!
Not for me. I gave up on it twice
Loved. It picks up
sort of gets better but I never understood why so many loved it.
I listened to it on Audio book and loved it!
I listened on Audio as well…loved it.
It is a wonderful book, but nothing is going to blow up or anything.
Fabulous story! Keep reading!
I tried too & had to stop.
It’s not fast paced but i did enjoy it. Has stuck with me.

The movie is available on Amazon Prime.
